Chapter 6 Disturbance At The Charity Banquet

"Miguel, what's wrong? Who was on the phone?" Veronica asked as she weakly sat up from the bed.

Her gentle voice snapped Miguel back to reality. After a while, the coldness in Miguel's eyes slowly faded away.

"Nothing," he replied as he walked back into the ward. "My assistant Steven said that Elan's design work will be sold at a charity banquet at the Aurora Hotel tonight. If we successfully buy it, we can use Elan's fame to get the company into the jewelry industry and earn more money."

"Are you talking about Elan the designer? I like the bracelet Evil's Tears designed by him the best!"

Hearing that, Miguel's face darkened. "Back when we were pen pals, you said that your favorite was the necklace named Star of the Ocean designed by Elan..."

Veronica's eyes widened as her heart began to race in panic. She looked away and put her hand on the back of her neck. "Well, people's preferences change, right?"

When she looked up, she saw Miguel shooting an icy glare at her, sending a shiver down her spine. Still, she pretended to be calm and forced a sweet smile. She wrapped her arms around his and said, "Miguel, you'll buy it for me, won't you?"

Although Miguel felt strange at Veronica's answer, the mere thought of her risking her life for him fifteen years ago made Miguel's heart soften. "Yes," he replied, his voice sounding slightly resigned.

After saying a few more reminders, Miguel grabbed his coat and left the ward.

The Aurora Hotel was one of the local five-star hotels in the area. The charity banquet would be held there, and only the rich and powerful were invited.

Having gathered enough courage, Brenda grabbed Lukas' arm as they entered the hall. As soon as she stepped inside, several cameras immediately turned to her.

Although she wasn't wearing any makeup, the coldness of her expression as well as the graceful nobility of her movements still stood out. The mole at the corner of her eye also accentuated her natural charm.

All of a sudden, the female companions brought by those rich businessmen felt threatened.

"Who's this woman? Does anyone know her?" They gathered around as they began to whisper to each other.

It was rare for Brenda to attend this kind of upper class banquet.

For the past three years she had been married to Miguel, she had lived a life of seclusion, cut off from the outside world. The only impression the public had of her was...

"Ah! I remember! Isn't she Mr. Hamilton's ex-wife? The one who just got divorced and immediately hooked up with someone else?"

"Yes! I heard that her father jumped off a building and turned into a vegetable. How could she still be in the mood to attend such a banquet?!"

Brenda paid no attention to any of the scathing words that these women were saying. All of a sudden, she felt something warm touch the back of her hand.

"It's fine. I'm here with you," Lukas comforted her, giving the back of her hand a light squeeze.

Brenda smiled at him. In fact, she wasn't taking those women's provocation seriously at all.

She tightened her hold on Lukas' arm and continued walking deeper into the hall. As they walked, a huge poster plastered on the wall caught her eye.

It was so eye-catching that she couldn't help but let go of Lukas' arms and walk towards it.

On the poster was a shiny necklace with a blue gem in the center surrounded by many colorful diamonds.

The closer she looked, the more the center of the gem resembled the deep hue of the sea. No matter what angle she looked from, it formed a scene of raging waves crashing against the shore.

Brenda had never thought that she would see this again after three years!

"Miss Sanchez, weren't you a full-time housewife? How come you know this masterpiece designed by Elan?" A woman standing a few meters away from them began approaching. There was a domineering air around her, and even though she was wearing high heels, she was still less than 160cm tall.

Behind her were several young ladies from rich families who were there to watch the fun.

The woman continued, "You do know that the meaning of Star of the Ocean is loyal and unshakeable love, right? Miss Sanchez, for a dissolute woman like you, I'm afraid you're not even qualified to look at this necklace."

Lukas grabbed the woman's arm and pulled her away. Speaking in hushed tones, he said, "Natalie, what are you doing here? Don't make any trouble!"

Natalie Powell was Lukas' younger sister. She didn't answer his question but asked, "Lukas, you're a brave man, aren't you? Why are you so smitten by this divorced woman? When grandpa heard the news yesterday, do you have any idea how furious he was? The Sanchez family is already doomed. What good will it do the Powell family if you get together with her?"

Then, Natalie turned her eyes to Brenda. Her stare was burning with hatred and resentment as she said, "I'm afraid you've already had an affair with another man while you were married. You cuckolded Miguel!"

Miguel happened to be within earshot when she said this.

The word "cuckolded" was particularly harsh, causing his eyebrows to knit together to the point where they almost touched.

When he looked up, he saw Brenda and Lukas together. They looked like a perfect match.
