Chapter 5 Lukas' Plan To Save Sanchez Group

The ambulance's siren rang ceaselessly as the medical personnel carried Louis to the stretcher. Although his body was covered in blood, he was still barely alive. Brenda clung on to that hope as she helped him into the ambulance.

She wanted to get into the ambulance with him, but her legs were too weak. Her head was spinning and she collapsed. Fortunately, someone was there to catch her.

"It seems that you still can't live without me," a young man wearing casual clothes said as he supported Brenda with his arms.

The man was none other than Lukas, Brenda's good friend. He and Brenda had grown up in the same neighborhood.

In the past, Louis had thought of letting Brenda marry Lukas. However, she rejected that idea.

It was also Lukas who had informed Brenda of the news about the Sanchez Group this morning.

"Why are you here?" she asked.

"I took the earliest flight back as soon as I sent you the message. Still, it looks like I'm a little late." As he spoke, Lukas grabbed her hand and led her to his sports car behind.

Brenda stared at Lukas' handsome face and felt a warm feeling spread in her heart.

Lukas was like her salvation.

Why had she fallen in love with Miguel at first sight when she had a good male friend by her side all these years?

For three years, she was forced to be humble in this loveless marriage.

Meanwhile, Miguel frowned at the sports car parked at the gate of the building. He watched as a man carried Brenda in his arms and loaded her into the car before buckling her in.

His face darkened at the sight.

They hadn't seen each other for only a few days, and yet, this woman already had a new guardian by her side. No wonder she had dared to speak to him in such a tone.

"The Sanchez and Powell families have been friends for generations. It's only natural that Miss Sanchez and Mr. Powell are on good terms," the assistant explained, noticing where Miguel's gaze was directed.

In the past three years, Miguel had never really known anything about Brenda. He had no idea about her private life as well as her connections.

So, when he heard the name "Powell family", his eyes instantly turned cold. "The Powell family was the one that took several big orders from the Glory Group, right?"

The assistant paused for a while and then answered, "Yes."

He wanted to say more, but when he saw Miguel's seething expression, he held his tongue and said nothing.

When he saw Miguel heading back to their car, he followed him in a hurry.

As soon as Miguel entered, he loosened his tie and leaned back. However, there was still a frown on his face, his mind was still preoccupied with something. His breathing also sounded a bit unstable, as if he was about to explode in rage. The assistant noticed all this and didn't dare say anything so as not to irritate the man any more.

After a long time, Miguel's cold voice finally broke the silence in the car. "Investigate what happened today," he ordered.

"Yes, Mr. Hamilton."

In the hospital, the first thing Brenda saw when she opened her eyes was the white ceiling above her. When she looked around the ward, she found that no one else was there.

It seemed that Lukas had gone somewhere else.

All of a sudden, the door swung open and caused a loud bang. Then, a woman wearing luxurious clothes stormed in, shouting, "Why did you divorce Miguel without telling anyone?! Are you deliberately trying to ruin the Sanchez family?! Luckily, your father met the famous brain doctor, Dr. Smith, just in time to save him. If it weren't for Dr. Smith, the Sanchez family would've been completely doomed!"

Out of the blue, Brenda felt a slap land on her face, causing her ears to ring.

She was already used to Penelope's domineering personality. With her eyes growing red, she said, "Don't worry. Neither of you will die. After all, how can you old foxes die so easily?"

Even though she said this, Brenda was secretly relieved to learn that Louis was alive.

She just didn't want to admit it.

Over the years, Louis and Penelope had treated her like a tool. They were the kind of parents who preferred boys to girls, so they didn't care about her life at all.

The only things they cared about were the interests of both Victor and the Sanchez Group.

"Yes, he's alive, but he's currently in a vegetative state. Whether he wakes up or not is up to God. Are you satisfied now?! Your brother is still in prison, and your father is a vegetable. I really don't know why we have a daughter like you in the Sanchez family!"

Penelope was seething in anger. Just looking at Brenda's face made her so furious that she wanted to grab Brenda's ears and yank them out of her head.

Just then, Lukas happened to return to the ward. He quickly put down the takeout he had just bought and stood in front of Brenda's bed. "Mrs. Sanchez! Brenda is currently still in recovery. Please calm down and don't be angry!" he tried to placate Penelope.

"Calm down? Look at her! How can I calm down when she keeps talking to me like that? She really screwed up the Sanchez Group this time!"

Penelope was so consumed by rage that her finger was trembling as she pointed and cursed at Brenda.

While cursing, she shot a meaningful glance at Lukas.

The Powell and the Sanchez families had been friends for decades. Penelope also knew that Lukas had always liked Brenda.

Now that Miguel was no longer around to protect them, perhaps it was a good idea to let Brenda marry Lukas.

With that in mind, Penelope came up with an idea. She grabbed Lukas' hands and said, "Lukas, I'm really moved that you're still willing to stay with Brenda after everything that had happened. Are you..."

With just a single glance, Brenda instantly knew what Penelope was thinking. Her eyes turned cold as she coughed on her fist and said, "If you're willing to put the same effort that you put into your schemes into the Sanchez family's business, maybe we wouldn't be in this situation."

Penelope's eyes narrowed. "What did you just say?!" She gnashed her teeth in anger, wanting to go past Lukas and give Brenda another slap.

Lukas shot Brenda a look, trying to tell her to say something nice to calm the situation down. However, Brenda pretended she didn't see it.

As long as she and Penelope were in the same room, there was no chance for a peaceful conversation.

"Mrs. Sanchez!" Lukas knew exactly what Penelope meant, but he didn't want to make things difficult for Brenda.

So, he tried to change the topic and said to Penelope, "I have another idea. Perhaps I can help the Sanchez Group. But anyway, this matter can only be discussed when Brenda is fully recovered."

As he said that, the room fell silent instantly.

A look of shock crept across Penelope's face, while Brenda looked up, anxiously clutching her quilt.

The Sanchez Group had been Louis' life's work. Brenda had personally watched her father painstakingly grow it from a dozen employees to nearly ten thousand. She also knew that Victor would eventually inherit it. So she could not stand by and watch others destroy her father's work.

Besides, as far as she knew about Louis, he didn't have the guts to owe anyone three billion dollars. There had to be something fishy going on.

A few days later, Brenda was fully recovered. She was wearing a light colored strapless dress as she sat in the passenger seat of a Bentley. "Are you sure this will work?" she asked.

Lukas leaned forward and fastened the seatbelt for her. Then he began tapping his fingers on the steering wheel and replied, "I've heard that Mr. Paul Hoffman will attend today's charity party. Right now, he's the biggest shareholder aside from Miguel. If we can buy the shares in his hands, then Miguel will no longer be the chairman of the Sanchez Group."

As soon as Brenda heard Miguel's name again, she felt an inexplicable pain in her heart.

Her love for that man was deeply rooted inside her. No matter how cold and indifferent she pretended to be, the pain in her heart told the truth that she could not deny.

"But..." Brenda hesitated.

Lukas began chuckling as he handed a stack of newspapers to Brenda. "What? You really hate the idea of pretending to be my fiancée? By the way, take a look at this..."

The headline of the newspaper read, "The eldest son of the Powell family has been pursuing the ex-wife of Glory Group's CEO for many years. Finally, his wish has come true!"

The accompanying photo was of Lukas' back as he carried Brenda in his arms, who was unconscious at the time.

When Brenda saw this, her face scrunched in disbelief. She frantically flipped through the newspaper and asked, "You released this?"

Lukas turned the keys in the ignition and started the engine. Then, as he turned the steering wheel, he raised an eyebrow at Brenda and replied, "Yes. You'll know the reason later."

Meanwhile, on the balcony of Ward 402 in the hospital, Miguel had just answered a phone call. His tall and straight body was facing away from the ward, exuding a cold, menacing aura.

"Mr. Hamilton, I checked the account of the person who led the riot yesterday. A day ago, two hundred thousand dollars was transferred to him from an overseas account. I talked to the bank staff and checked the domestic accounts that had recently paid out the same amount. There I found Miss Ballard among dozens of people..."

After hanging up, Miguel tightly clutched the phone in his hand as an icy look flashed in his eyes.
