Chapter 7 The Babies In Her Womb

Despite her weakness, Rasima forced herself to sit up. The paper in her hand was alarming enough to make her do it.

"You're pregnant?" Mrs Chantal asked, her sullen mood getting swapped with disappointed shock.

Rasima shook her head, still staring at the paper.

"No. This is not possible", Rasima repudiated.

Then, she looked up at the doctor. "This cannot be mine, doctor. It's not possible",

"Well...the test was done with your blood, Miss. And blood tests are almost always reliable. I strongly believe you're pregnant. I actually ran a quantitative blood test and with the high amount of hcg that I found, I can say you've been pregnant for over two months", the young doctor answered.

Rasima flinched. Now, it sounded more terrifying to her.

"What nonsense is this?" She threw the paper to the floor. "Two months pregnant? Are you for real?? I was on my damn period just a week ago, and for the past two months, I've never missed my period! So, what the hell are you talking about?"

There was a brief pause.

"Well..." the doctor cleared his throat. "There have been rare cases of women bleeding during...."

"And I'm telling you I'm not one of them!" Rasima yelled at him. The whole thing was making her go nuts.

Mrs Chantal dipped her fingers into her hair and let out a deep sigh. "Your lover...Lucas. Haven't you been..."

"Of course, we have. But I've always been on pills, mum. I'm telling you, there's no way I've been pregnant for two months. It's not possible".

The room became tensed. The doctor furthermore, tried to explain things to Rasima that it was possible she could've been pregnant without her knowing. He tried to tell her there had been such cases, but Rasima wouldn't buy any of it. She was so sure she's never been pregnant and felt the whole thing was a big mistake.

"Maybe we should run another test", Mrs Chantal suggested.

Rasima's denial was just too valid, Mrs Chantal was beginning to believe her.

"Fine. But I'm not running one at this hospital. It's obvious they're incompetent", she answered angrily and started disconnecting the drip from her hand.

"Hold on, Miss. Hold on...", the doctor rushed to help her.

***

Few minutes later, Rasima was in the car, waiting for her mum as she paid the hospital bills.

Her heart beat rapidly, she was only trying so hard to be tough to the eyes of others.

Deeply, she prayed for the result to be false. For God's sake, there was no way she could be pregnant. Her period has always been regular, so it was very easy to know when she was ovulating. And for the past three years, she's never missed a period.

Lucas wasn't a sex freak, and the little times they got intimate, she made sure to take pills right after. How could she have been pregnant without knowing?

Her hands itched, but she forced herself not to do it as she thought of the place it was tempted to touch.

Slowly, she gave in and placed her hand on her tummy. She wouldn't deny feeling heavy since the previous day. Even her breast had gotten bigger. But she didn't pay attention to them as she was so sure she couldn't pregnant. She didn't want to be.

Her mother reached the car and opened the door to the driver's seat, Rasima withdrew her hand quickly from her tummy.

"I know of a very good place we can go to. Don't worry", Mrs Chantal assured as she started the car.

***

Getting to the second hospital and explaining the situation to the doctor, the doctor suggested they ran a scan instead as that would give them a visible result.

Rasima waited till she was pressed enough, then went in with her mum for the scan.

Her heart beat rapidly as she laid upward on the bed. Earnestly, she prayed for the result to be fake. She prayed for the scan to show she was normal and nothing else. For God's sake, she had so much plans for her life. And surely, getting pregnant wasn't one of them.

In a short time, the scan began as the doctor moved the transducer against her abdomen. Rasima lifted her head to watch from the screen. She couldn't understand what was being displayed.

"I think... the first doctor was right", the doctor suddenly said, staring at the screen.

Mrs Chantal gasped and clasped her palms over her mouth.

"What?" Rasima said under her breath.

"I mean, it's obvious. Look here", the doctor pointed at the screen. "This is it. And it's actually...twins".

Rasima's next breath came in a startled gasp. Following the doctor's hand, she could identity the babies. It was so tiny, but she could see it.

What the hell? Was this a joke?!

She became dumb instantly, not knowing how else to react.

"For Selene's sake...", Mrs Chantal muttered.

Rasima looked downwards and shook her head.

"This can't be. I...I can't be pregnant".

Silence descended afterward and stretched for a long time. Then, Mrs Chantal broke it up.

"Erm... doctor, please could you excuse us for a minute, please?"

"Sure".

The doctor dropped his transducer and left the room.

"Rasima", Mrs Chantal held her hands. "I know you're confused, but the results have proven to us that you're indeed, pregnant. Now, are you still certain that Lucas is not responsible for this?"

Rasima looked into her mother's eyes, hers becoming teary already.

"I'm so certain, mum. There's no way I could've pregnant. I was ..I was careful enough", she uttered.

The look on Mrs Chantal's face changed.

"Oh, my!" She exhaled. "You might be pregnant with Joelle's babies!"
