Chapter 5 The Blames

The day dawned crisp and clear. The sun poured through the window, having a minimal reflection of Alpha Jamin who stood close to it.

Alpha Jamin stood forlornly with his hands in his trouser pocket as he gazed out the window. Garbed in a black pair of pants and a white tucked-in long-sleeved, he looked just like a CEO setting out for business.

Sadness could be felt all over him. Recently, the workers had become scared of getting close to him as they feared how easily agitated he had become.

He was losing the little good side of him gradually. Each hour that passed by without his babies being found made him lose his mind.

Someone knocked on the door, but he gave no reply. He already knew who it was as he could tell the scent of his mate from a distance. She knocked again, and when he said nothing still, the door opened and she walked in.

Holding a tray of breakfast with her, her countenance became even worst when she saw how morosely he stood by the window. She never knew the Alpha could be broken by a thing like that. She's never had to be so scared of him.

Lowering her head, she ambled into the room and dropped the tray on his reading table.

"Jamin, I brought you breakfast", she said calmly.

She was the only one who got to call him by his name.

Alpha Jamin was silent for a while.

"I didn't ask for food. I'm not hungry", he grumped.

Nika's heart twitched. His reply was hurting, but it was more hurting that he wouldn't even look at her. She had taken an extra effort to look good for him, just in an attempt to get his attention. But it obviously wasn't working.

"Jamin, come on", she went closer but was scared to place her hand on him. "The workers are already doing their job. They're making every effort to find the babies. So, why don't you relax for a moment and have hope?"

There was a brief pause.

"And what if the babies are never found? What if Meredith was actually wrong and Joelle never transfered the babies to anyone? What if the babies are just somewhere - dead?" His voice was cold and sour.

Bit by bit, Nika had the courage to place her hand on his shoulder, and she was thankful he didn't resist.

"Even if the babies are dead, you can still make more. They're still ladies out there who..."

Her hand fell off his shoulder as Jamin turned to her at once. The icy look in his eyes made Nika taka a step back. She could hardly recognize the man in front of her.

"I want those babies alive, Nika", he gritted. "They're mine - my flesh and blood - and I want nothing more than to have them in my arms. So, don't ever spew such nonsense to me again".

Nika was confused; what exactly did she do wrong? What wrong did she say?

It was true. The Alpha's temper had gotten worst and it was only right that he was avoided, at least for the meantime.

It was a pity that when he had finally looked at her, it was with anger and not admiration.

She took more steps back and lowered her head.

"I'll leave now", she mumbled and walked out the door, feeling so much hurt.

**************************

Rasima's head was aching from her mother's rant as she fixed her luggages. It had come as a shock to her when Rasima told her her flight had already been booked and she was set to leave by noon.

"Why don't you listen to me, Rasima? We still have four days to go, why would you want to leave all of a sudden?" Mrs Chantal continued nagging.

Kylie leaned there on the door, her hands crossed as she watched them silently.

"Besides, you're not feeling too strong. You need to get enough rest."

"I'm sorry, mum, but I'm not changing my mind. It's obvious this city isn't good for me. I've been getting nothing but negativities since I got here", Rasima answered, feebled.

Her face was so pale and her muscles weak. She was barely managing to get her things together.

"Come on, Rasima, this is not fair. Everything that happened was a mere coincidence and not because it's badluck. You can't leave now; not so quickly".

Rasima said nothing but went on with her arrangements.

"Rasima...."

"Let her be, mum", Kylie suddenly chipped in. "Why's her presence so important, anyway? It's not like she's been useful around here".

"Kylie!" Mrs Chantal scolded. "Will you watch it?"

"Watch what exactly? It's only normal she craves to be around people like her. Obviously, she doesn't belong here and will never be", Kylie taunted.

Rasima paused and glared at her, a dress in her hand. "And I am grateful for that. So, do not think I feel punished for anything.

"Oh! Please", Kylie rolled her eyes. "Don't act like you don't miss it. Maybe, you're right. Maybe, badluck really lurks around you each time you're here. Now, I think everything here happened because of you. You bring nothing but badluck wherever you go".

"Kylie!" Mrs Chantal yelled. "Have you lost your mind?"

Rasima's eyes had snapped, it could be told from how red her eyes had gotten.

"If you're trying to blame me just again for dad's death, I'd suggest you walk away, 'cause I won't take it from you, Kylie", Rasima stated slowly, trying to make sure she was clear enough.

Kylie left the door she leaned on and stood upright to face Rasima.

"Well, I'm putting it to your face, Rasima. I've always and still blame you for dad's death", staring right into her eyes, she said. "No matter how everyone wants to paint it, you killed dad! You caused his death! You've always wanted to be the favourite child, always wanted to be the spoilt brat. That night, he told you he needed some rest, but you wouldn't stop nagging of how much you needed some steak. You forced him to go out with you, Rasima, and that was how he was killed! YOU killed him! And oh! I'll hate you forever for it!"

The dress Rasima held in her hand fell as her body vibrated. Her eyes had gotten so sore, a tear effortlessly strolled down.

With fast strides, she went towards Kylie and landed a hard slap across her cheek.

Mrs Chantal gasped and walked in to stand between them.

"Stop this! Both of you!" She cried.

Kylie's hand held her hurting cheek as she stared at Rasima in both shock and hate.

"Don't you EVER say such words to me again", Rasima pointed a finger at her. "Father loved us both as kids, but if you feel I was his favorite, it's probably because you were so ugly, he couldn't find a favorite in you".

Kylie's eyes had tears stinging it as well.

"If you think it's cool to hate me, go ahead. Because I hate you even more", Rasima added.

Broken, Kylie ran out of the room.

"For Selene's sake, what is wrong with both of you?!" Mrs Chantal cried. "How can you act this way in front of me?"

Rasima dabbed some of the tears from her eyes, then walked back to her luggages. Now, her heart felt more broken than she had ever thought it would be. Pains spiraled through and nearly crippled her.

Her mother stood there by the door, crying, while Rasima resumed fixing her clothes.

Until suddenly, she felt her legs jerk and give out to the floor.

"Rasima!" Mrs Chantal shrieked and ran to her.

Rasima suddenly became dumb. Her fever had gotten on a high side, she could barely lift a finger.

Her mother's voice echoed in her head until gradually, it dwindled as her eyes closed up in sleep.
