Chapter 3 The Rise of a Monster

The green light message went off on their phones with one message "KILL THEM ALL." Like one body the fifteen men got out of their three SUVs and began making their way towards the fair ground entrances. As people began to take notice of them the men began to fire on any person that was in their path and they did not discriminate. As they emptied their first magazines they just dropped them and put the next ones in and kept walking and shooting. The group that came through the main gate headed straight for the exhibit buildings and the patio area.

As they started getting into more people they set let their AK's fall on their slings and began to fire off their shotguns that were loaded with buckshot, leaving screaming, crying and the dead behind in their path of destruction. The main gate groups targets were to be the exhibit building, the patio area and then to make their way through the carnival rides. They were to then exit on the side where the third group was parked at and take their vehicle. Each of the men knew what they needed to do and they had no remorse for the men, women, and children they gunned down. The one hope that they had is that they would be confronted by the police or the deputies who were working the fair as the rounds in their AK's were armor piercing rounds and they planned on roasting some pigs tonight. As they got to the exhibit building doors three went through one set while the other two went the the side doors. They then began to unleash hell on all who were in the buildings. By this time the music had stopped and there was nothing but gun shots and screams.

Deputy Luis Morales had been on the job for twenty three years and was thinking about how in two more years he would be retired and fishing along all the different lakes in Texas. He was talking to two local police officers who were helping patrol the fair on the Family night. They were talking about a pursuit that hey had gotten into a couple days ago and how the guy had shot himself before allowing the officers to take him into custody. The officers had found no ID and before shooting himself the guy had dumped and lit two five gallons of gas on the seats and lighting it. As the officers talked Deputy Morales was enjoying his turkey leg when he observed five subjects come through the side entrance and saw blossoms of fire as the sound of gun fire registered in his mind. He dropped the turkey leg mid bight and began drawing his sidearm when he felt a mist hit his face and watched as one of the two officers crumpled with part of his forehead missing. Deputy Morales and the other officer began firing their service weapons striking two of the advancing gun men in the chest but they seemed unphased and kept coming. Deputy Morales fired more round and caused one of the figures to stumble but he did not go down and with no cover available he fired until his slide locked back. As he reach for his next magazine in his vest a heavy blast threw him backwards and knocked the magazine from his grasp. As he turned to grab his next magazine from his vest Deputy Morales has struck in the head dying instantly with his pistol slide still locked back. He would never get to fish the lakes again and would not know the number of lives he had saved while all five gun men where focused on him. The two local police officers lay near his body along with the body of one of the attackers.

Every officer dread hearing a call for officers down or an active shooter go out on the radio but that is exactly what came on the radio that day. "10-33 Officers Down" came out over the radio as Deputy Tomas was making his way back up to the jail to drop off the drunk that was singing "Hit me baby one more time." Deputy Tomas turned his radio up and listened as dispatch came over calling any available unit, advising multiple suspects and multiple causalities. Being only a block for the jail Tomas dropped the prisoner off and promised to finish getting him booked as soon as he got back from responding to the call. Tomas raced towards the fair grounds and began preparing himself for what was fixing to come. He had trained for this exact thing and knew that he must react with speed, force, surprise, and action. As he was about three blocks from the fairgrounds he began to see people just running in all directions and none seemed to know where they were going they were just fleeing the carnage. As Deputy Tomas called "97 the area" meaning that he had arrived Trent pulled up next to his unit and they both got out grabbing their go bags and began running towards the gunshots. All Tomas could think is true warriors protect those who can't protect themselves and swallowed any fear that he felt as a calm came over him when he identified a shooter and began to engage him. Following training procedures Tomas and Trent put two in the mans chest and the man did not even seem phased and began to return fire towards them. Both went straight into a failure drill and gave the suspect two more to the body and the third shot entered the suspect right below his left and right eye sockets and exited out the back of his head. One threat eliminated Tomas thought to himself as shots and screams continued to ring out across the fair grounds.

Deputy Gina White and Deputy Collin Williams were patrolling the carnival area talking to people they knew and watching the people get on and off of rides. As they rounded the corner near the Farris wheel they began to hear gunshots go off and screams of people. They began running towards the sounds just in time to see Deputy Morales go down. Gina got on the radio calling "10-33 Officers Down, shot fired at the fair grounds." As Collin began engaging the gunmen from behind a ticket booth. Collin yelled at Gina to head back the way they had just came and take as many people as she could to the exit by rodeo arena. Gina gave Collin one of her mags telling him to watch his back but knowing that getting people out of harms way was important. Collin was pinned down but he was also keeping two of the gunmen pinned down while the other two headed off in the opposite direction. Counting his shots and trying to make them count Collin peaked around the ticket booth and could see a foot sticking out from behind the lemonade stand that one of the gunmen was hiding behind. Taking a breath and knowing where he would be targeting he peaked around the ticket booth and fired two rounds at the foot. There was a scream and the gunman lunged fell from behind the stand and Collin put two more rounds down range both finding their marks in the gunman's head. Taking a second to do a tactical reload Collin knew he was starting to run low on ammo and there was still one gunman firing at him and two others that he knew that had took off. Collin peaked around the ticket booth again and felt a blow to his shoulder that rocked him backwards. He saw the gunman stand up and knew he was still firing at him when all of the sudden the gunman did did a little dance and fell over. Collin heard feet coming up behind him and prepared himself to roll over and start engaging targets when he heard Gina's voice telling people to go out the gate and to run, don't run to your cars just run she yelled. Gina and Undersheriff George Lopez helped Collin up and kept ushering as many people out as they could while keeping watch for more gunmen that they knew were out there as the shots and screams continued. They checked what ammo they had between them and started towards the gunfire knowing very well what it could mean for them.
