Chapter 9 Where is your husband

Selene stopped in her tracks. She was surprised that Matteo would ask such a question.

Why on earth would she love a man who had cheated on her with Cassandra?

But before she could say anything to deny it, Matteo waved his hand dismissively, as though he had immediately lost interest in the matter. "Forget it."

Then he turned around and trotted down the stairs.

Selene felt puzzled, wondering what was going on in that man's mind. She sighed helplessly and closed the door to their room.

She scanned the bare room and suddenly felt a little happy.

"I can do three days" she said to herself suddenly seeing his absence in a new light. She would be free from seeing him for three days, she could do whatever she wanted, she could sleep comfortably on the bed, she could read her books without being bothered by anyone, she could be herself for three days.

She jumped on the bed happily shaking her body vigorously. This was the best thing anyone had ever done for her and she was glad he left her.

Two days had passed and one day was left before Matteo came back. Selene had locked herself up in the room enjoying the free time she had to herself. She only came out of the room if she was hungry or needed fresh air.

Selene sat in the bed reading a book when she heard her stomach grumble. She decided to get a late night snack for herself.

"Oh there she is, the woman who hasn't seen her husband for two days and is unbothered by it, can you believe that mother?" Cassandra said immediately she saw her stepping out of the kitchen.

"Where is my son?" Emily asked standing in front of her.

Selene didn't know exactly where Matteo had gone to so she couldn't truthfully answer her.

"He went on a three day business trip" she lied smoothly but Emily did not believe her.

"Matteo has never stepped his feet in his office for a year now. What stupid business trip are you talking about?" Emily asked back and Selene swallowed the next lie she was about to say.

How was she going to compete against his mother who knew almost everything about him.

"To tell you the truth ma'am, I don't know exactly where he went but he will be back tomorrow." she answered.

"So you tried to lie to mother." Cassandra yelled at her.

'Mother' Selene hated that Cassandra could address Emily as mother but she actually couldn't.

"I didn't mean to lie to her. He said he was out on a trip. What other trip would he mean other than a business trip" she defended herself in front of the two of them.

"So if my son got lost for three days, you wouldn't care. You were tasked with taking care of him and watching his every move." Emily barked at her and Selene bit her tongue in despair.

"If I remember correctly, your son is a grown up which means he is capable of taking care of himself." she answered back.

She hated the fact that they were acting like Matteo was a spoilt child, giving her the responsibility of taking care of him. How could she take care of a full grown man, much less a man who didn't want her getting involved in his business.

"That bratty mouth of yours is the reason why you are here in the first place, you cheated and wasn't able to keep a man, now that you were given a second chance, you still aren't able to keep him either. You are just a shameful slut" Emily yelled and pushed her.

The plate in Selene's hand crashed to the floor and she braced herself for impact when she fell into a strong set of arms.

She opened her eyes to meet a familiar but yet odd set of blue eyes staring at her.

"Matteo" Emily gasped surprised that she had pushed Selene into his arms.

The world seem to stand still as Matteo and Selene kept staring at each other without moving or uttering a word at all.

Matteo's eyes were still fixed on Selene while Emily and Cassandra ran away in fear of him.

Selene stared into his blue sparkling eyes and was lost a bit in it. He pulled her back up and his skin happen to touch hers. Selene could feel that he was burning up more than usual.

He didn't utter a word to her and left proceeding to his room, Selene followed him immediately to be sure if he was really sick.

She watched him climb the bed and close his eyes,

"Matteo are you okay?" she walked up to him.

She was already surprised that he came back much earlier than he had told her but she was more worried about his health.

"Don't bug me" he replied her and she frowned.

Why did he always have to act so cold to her when she was just trying to help him? She moved closer to him and touched his head. She was greatly shocked to find out that he was burning up.

"You have a fever" she stated.

"I said stay away from me" he shut his eyes and tried to sleep when he felt a wet towel placed on his head.

"Shout at me all you want; it won't stop me from taking care of you." she muttered and he opened his eyes. She was so close to him that he could see her cleavage but he chose not to be distracted. Her blue eyes were bright and he could guess that she must have enjoyed his absence.

"I don't want you near me, is that too much to ask" he tried to push her away but his hands were too weak to even stop her, he laid on the bed breathless as he watched her then he dozed off closing his eyes.

Selene was glad that he actually slept off. It gave her enough time to attend to him without troubles. She thought him being sick was the reason why he came back so quickly and she was right.

She picked the towel from his head and dipped it into the cold water again then she gently placed it on his head. She stayed by his side steadfastly and changed the towel several times. When she was sure that his fever had gone down, she sighed in relief and rested her head on the edge of the bed. Soon, she fell asleep.

When Selene woke up again, she was surprised to find herself lying in bed, tucked under the quilt. Matteo was nowhere to be found. She knew he must've slipped away again. She hurriedly got up and went downstairs, hoping to catch up to him.

However, as soon as Selene reached the door, she saw Matteo's car pulling out of the garage. She hastily hailed a cab and ordered the driver to follow Matteo's car.

This time, Selene was determined to have some questions answered. Matteo always left early and came home late. What was he up to? Why would a rich young man like him always come home with fresh bruises?
