"Nothing happened ma.
I recalled something while at the office today,
I wanted to see if I still have it." He said calmly,
She didn't look convinced at his story but had nothing to count him for,
So she let it slide.
"Okay,
Dinner would be served soon,
Freshen up and come downstairs." She said to him,
He nodded and she left him.
Immediately she did,
He went back to the journal, flipping through it pages in search of the one contact that would change the verdict of whoever that had rejected Lana.
"Found it!" He squealed in excitement as he found the contact,
Mr Ted Lawrence, his godfather and a senior manager at Bluestone,
Why hadn't he thought if this before?
He asked himself as he pulled out his cellphone and dialed the number.
"Hello good evening sir." He greeted the man when he picked the call,
"Evening,
Who am I speaking with?" The man asked,
"You might not remember me but I'm Tristan Martinez,
Tony Martinez's son."
"Oh! Oh! Oh!
I'm sorry my son,
The old man is getting older and we tend to forget people a lot." The man joked,
Tristan just gave out a light laughter.
"How's your father,Tony,
It's been awhile.."
"He's fine sir.
He's doing great." He replied impatiently,
He hadn't called for his father,
His father is the second to the last topic he wants to talk to the man about.
"How's..."
"Uncle I need a favor from you." He cuts in to stop the man from asking another irrelevant question,
"A favor.
What favor?" He asked after mirroring his words.
"I sent a referral to intern in your company,
She'd good credentials but was rejected and I want you to review her application yourself." He plied,
"Lana Campbell,
That's her name." He added.
The man was confused,
It wasn't in his place to accept or reject intern though, he has the authority to if he wants to, but he never gets involved in the duties that weren't his.
But since his godson Tristan Martinez was personally asking.
Maybe it was time to break protocols.
"Okay,
Send me her details and I'll go through them." The man told him,
He'd been favored by Tristan's father in the past,
Maybe it's time to repay the fafor and get back with his old friend.
"I'll resend you her details and please uncle,
"I don't want her to ever know that I'd instigated her acceptance into your company." He pleaded,
"Okay,
Consider that one." The man concurred that instantly,
He'd no intentions of telling whatever deal with him to whoever this intern is.
"And one more thing,
Can you personally mentor this one for me?" He asked the man,
Silence,
"You see Lana is someone with great potential she isn't aware of and I need someone as good you to mentor her,to teach her and to enlighten her on things she's to know,
Someone to help expand her horizon..."
"I understand where you're getting at but we've got a problem there,
Even if I get her internship accepted,
I don't think it's in my power time chose who her mentor would be and who wouldn't..."
"No uncle,
You've got to do this for me.
I want Lana under you,please,
This is as important as getting her the internship." He explained to the man,
The thought of another male mentoring Lana and trying to get close to her sets him off the edge.
"Okay,
I'll see what I'll do about that." The man said to him,
With a bit of assurance from the man,
He thanked him and they called it a night.
After the call,
He kept back the journal where he'd gotten it,
Then went to freshen up before joining his parents for dinner downstairs.
"What took you so long?" His mother asked him when he finally came down after the long wait.
"Nothing,
I'd to handle some work related stuffs." He lied to them as he pulled out the seat and sat down,
"Good evening dad." He greeted his father,
"Evening son,
How was work?" The man asked him and he shrugged,
"Fine,
The company is doing fine." He replied the man who gave a prideful smile,
He hasn't made the wrong choice.
Tony Martinez had gone on an official rest since two months ago and had had his son Tristan take care of the business while he took his official rest and no lie,
He couldn't be any prouder of his son as he was handling the business better than he'd expected.
The board members were impressed when he'd his last meeting with them and they even joked about the man retiring for good for Tristan to step up as the new CEO.
The man half joking and half seriously had told them he would think about it and he'd been thinking about it since.
"We aren't gonna talk about work on the table,so don't start." Angela cautioned her husband when she saw the look of pride on his face,
"I wasn't going to start talking about work." The man defended himself from her accusation,
Tristan seeing them go back and forth over and over again couldn't help but smile,
His parents are on hell of a dramatic couple.
The next day, Lana got a mail from Bluestone.
She'd gotten dressed and was going to get her sandals when she heard the ping in her laptop.
She went to it to see who'd message her but surprisingly, it was a mail from Bluestone and they'd asked her to come for an interview by twelve noon.
She was excited,
An interview by noon.
"Yes!" She screamed as happiness exploded every cell in her body,
The door opened abruptly and Bryan rushed inside the room.
"What happened?" He asked alarmed,
"I heard scream,
What happened?" He asked again,
She waltz from the bed to him and took his arms while he stared at her in confusion,
"What happened sister?" He asked again, his face had released the worried line it held but that still hadn't eased his curiosity.
"They wanted to come for an interview." She sang merrily as she continued to waltz with him,
"Who?"He asked,
"Bluestone,
I'd submitted an application for an internship and now they want me to come for an interview." She explained to him,
"Wow that's great news." He said to her and she nodded,
"It's apparently the best news I'd hear so far." She chimed with happiness as they waltz around the room.
"Let's tell Tristan about it." Bryan said,
She hesitated for awhile then said,
"No let's no tell him yet,
I'll ask him to have dinner with us later today after I must have gone for the interview and return,
Then I'll announce it to him during dinner." She suggested,
"That's a good one,
Well announced it to him during dinner..."
"But wait,
How am I going tell him before going for the interview?" She asked as confusion crept into her face,
"Cause definitely,
He's going to ask." She added looking at her brother with a confused expression plastered on her face.
He thought for awhile before saying,
"Leave it for me to handle."
"Uh?
What are you going to do?" She asked,
He smirked and said,
"Don't worry sis,
I've got you covered." He assured her.
Since he'd promised to handle it for her,she knew best he would handle it for her,
So she gave him a light peck on the cheek,
"Thank you bro.."
"C'mon sis,
Don't go all emotional for me now." He said and she started laughing,
"Okay okay,
I won't but still,
I'm so grateful."
"Like I did anything,
I should be saying that to you,
For taking care of me and having to bear the burden of managing the house.."
A drop of tear fell down from his blue eyes and he wiped it away immediately,
"Don't worry Bry,
You know you don't have to hide those tears away from me.." She asserted after he'd wiped the tear away,
Even she was at the verge of it too.
"I miss mom," Bryan finally said,
"I miss them both.
Most times I just wish this is all a dream and I'll wake up and they're here with us,
Mom would be preparing breakfast and dad would be in the living room reading his Newspaper,
But then,if I go to the living room,
Dad isn't there and mom isn't in the kitchen either.
It then dawn on me that they're gone and I won't be seeing them again and I feel sad." He cried to his sister,
Who'd now released her flood of tears and they were trickling down her face.
"I miss them a lot,
I really do." He continued,
She wiped off the tears falling his eyes and gave him a peck on his forehead,
"I miss them too and most times I wish I'd stop them from leaving home that day,
But what had happened had happened and it's left for us to show them that all their effort on us aren't in vain." She pecked him again,
"Remember what mom used to say to us when we're sad?"
He looked at her and nodded,
"Sad memories make us learn and grow but happy memories makes us live longer." They said simultaneously and slowly,
Smile started creeping into the sad faces.
"That's my boy,
Now let's go get something sweet to eat,
It'll help with the mood."
"Cause you can't eat a sweet food and still remain sad." Bryan said after her and she nodded as she went to get the box of chocolate from the refrigerator.
After comforting themselves with a few wraps chocolate.
It was evident it did the magic cause both siblings weren't sad anymore, they started talking about what to prepare for dinner since Tristan would be joining them.
"Let's make Eggplant Parmesan."Bryan suggested but Lana shook her head,
"You know I can't make that,
I'm gonna make a mess..."
"I'll help you and make sure you don't make a mess of it."
"Okay," She obliged.
The doorbell rang and knowing who it was,
She got up from the bed and so did her brother,
"Tristan's here." She said to him,
"He came quite early,
My school bus isn't here yet." Bryan said as he got up from the bed,
Then they left the room to the living room.
Lana opened the door after spying through the peephole,
"Good morning." Tristan greeted them when he walked into the living room,
"Morning Trist,
You came quite earlier today." Lana aired out to him,
He just shrugged,
How would he explain this to her?
He knows she was looking forward to coming with him to the office and he was looking forward to spending the day with her but then,
A call came in before he left home,
There'd been a mechanic accident in their factory in Manhattan and he has to go there.
He would have wanted her to come with him but Mr Lawrence had called him and the man told him he'd set an interview with her by twelve pm,
She can't afford to miss the interview and he wouldn't want her to,
So he'll have to go alone.
"Yeah,
Something came up and I'm not going to the office." He said and her face fell,
"What happened?" She asked him,
"There'd been a situation at our factory at my presence is needed there." He explained to her.
"Uh.
So when will you be back?" She asked,
Just then Bryan's school bus blew it's horn from outside nd he knew it was time to leave.
"Good bye Trist,
Goodbye sis." He bade farewell to them as he picked his schoolbag and his packed lunch and he rushed out if the door.
"I'll be back by evening." He replied her question,
"Okay.
Can you come over for dinner when you return?" She blurted,
His heart made a happy leap and he smiled,
"Yes I will,
I won't miss that for anything." He assured her and she nodded.
"Okay,
Take care of yourself." She told him and he embraced her,
"I'll and you take care of yourself too." He whispered to her as they hugged,
She nodded and slowly began to pull away.
He didn't want to pull away,
He just wanted to stay in her arms forever,
To be with her and have her warm body against his,
That was what he solely wished for but duty calls,
He had to leave.
"Okay,
Have nice day." He said when they finally pulled away,
She nodded and saw him off to the door,
"Do you want to tell me anything?" He asked her when they were outside the house,
Expecting her to tell him about the interview but she shook her head,
"Nothing,
Just take care of yourself and don't forget dinner tonight."
He was quite disappointed but having her remind him of dinner like a woman reminding her lover to come home for dinner,
He felt a whole lot better than he was before.
"Yes ma,
I wouldn't miss your dinner for anything." He assured her,
She turned scarlet with his words and he smiled, seeing her blush,
"Okay,
I'll be on my way now." He said to her,
She nodded and waved him as bye as he took the few steps away from her.
She watched him till he got into his car and when he did,
He waved to her before starting the car,
"Good luck Lana!" He yelled as he drove away,
She didn't put to heart was her was wishing her good luck for,
She just mumbled a thanks and went back inside the house.
A few minutes after eleven, she left the house,
Wearing an old but elegant work suit that was once her mom's.
She walked down to the main street before she got a cab and when she did,
She told the driver where her destination was and he drove her there.
Coming out of the cab,
Lana was gobsmacked at the sight of the ultra modern building in front of her,
It was as tall as it could get, made of tinted glass and whatever had been used to construct it.
She paid her fare and walked nervous passed the gate,
She counted her steps as she walked into the main entrance,
Something she does to take her mind of nervousness but this time,
It wasn't working,
The closer she gets,
The more nervous and intimidated she becomes.
The interior of the building was far more intimidated than the exterior,
Whoever this Mr Salvador is,
The man was being extraordinarily loaded to have a structure like this as a company.
Like the building in mainly made of of glasses, transparent glasses and other sophisticated architectural designs that made it look exquisite.
Those were her thoughts as she walked towards the lady on the other side of the large hall.
"Good morning ma." She greeted the blonde haired lady and she raised her head up from her desk,
"Morning,
How many I help you?" She asked her,
Lana felt pretty intimidated when she noticed the lady was sizing her up,
Making an analysis of her in her head.
She pushed the odd feeling aside and put up a bright smile,
"I'm here for the internship inter---"
"Oh that," The lady sighed, cutting Lana off but she decided to keep her cool,
"Yes that." She replied the lady,
"Take the elevator to the twenty-eighth floor,
Tell whoever you meet there that you're here for the interview and they'll handle it from there." She explained to Lana like she was some naughty kid who's gotten lost in the mall again and needs the direction out.
Not bothered to thank her because of her sultry attitude,
Lana left the desk and headed to the elevator that was close.
She got into the elevator and turned to press the control panel to take her to the twenty eighth floor but just then,
A man rushed towards the door frantically,
He opens the door and got inside the cubicle with her.
"Hey," He breathed out like someone who'd just ran a marathon,
It was clear he'd been running for awhile.
"Hi." She said and looked away,
"Twenty-eighth floor?" He said and she nodded,
"Yes,me too." She mumbled and he touched the control sensor.
"So what's your name?" He asked her,
"Lana." She muttered under her breathe and he smiled,
"Nice name,
I'm Chad." He said bringing his hand for a handshake which she hesitantly took.
"Nice to meet you."
"The pleasure is mine Lana." He said to her,
She wriggled her palm free from his and slowly he let go, still smiling though.
They said no words to each other till the elevator stopped,
Lana thinking they'd gotten to the twenty-eighth floor,
She was about stepping out when Chad stopped her,
"We aren't there yet." He said to her,
She looked at the indicator and truly,
They weren't there yet,
She gave a slight nod and rested back and a woman joined them.
The door closed again and the elevator continued to move,
No words was said between them till the cubicle took it's last stop and the door opened,
Lana hurriedly left the cubicle,so did the woman and Chad.
"Sir." She called Chad that was about entering on of the offices and he turned to her,
"Please I'm here for an internship interview and...."
"Oh,
You're here for the interview?" He mirrored and she nodded,
"Wait here." He said to her, pointing at the waiting seat by the corner,
She walked to the seat and sat down then he went into the office.
He came out with a man awhile later,
Lana was still sitting down there,so he left the man and walk towards her,
"Lana,come with me." He said,
The man who'd come out with him frowned hearing the name.
"Lana Campbell?" He asked looking at them and Lana nodded,
"Uh,
Lana Campbell.
Ehm...follow me." He said to her then turned to Chad,
"Take those files to Mr Walker and tell him I said I want those corrections done before the day runs out and he should send it to my office before closing hours." The man said to Chad who nodded comprehendingly at the man's orders.
"See you later Lana." Chad said as he went towards the elevator,
He got in and waved to Lana who waved back at him,
"Follow me." The man said said to her,
She nodded and followed him,
He led her to the elevator and punched in their floor number they're headed to in the control panel and the elevator started moving upward after a few seconds.
"I'm Mr Lawrence." The man finally broke the silence in the elevator,
Lana turner to him, nervousness racing her entire system and she wondered how the man had gotten to know her name,
"Nice to meet you sir." She managed to say to the man before turning back to the light indicator which showed they're just two floor away.
One more and........
"Ding." The elevator pinged and the door opened,
"Let's go." The man said as he left the way out the the elevator.
The man led her to one side of the large hall,
The place was wide enough with transparebt thick glasses that had the boldy written initials B.S.C written on it and more twenty people waiting for their turn to be interviewed.
Lana was nervous, seeing all the faces that stared at her as she walked beside the man to the office,
They were mostly females and their glares were no lie, threatening and intimidating and for a moment,
She thought she might pass out.
Even her smile wasn't reciprocated as they looked at her like she was about to cause another world war,
Why are females folks like this?
