Chapter 5 Meeting MR and Mrs. Davis

Leila woke up and rushed to prepare for another day at the office. She was tired as she had slept late dealing with her friend's unexpected news. She rushed to work and as usual she was the first one in the office.

She was busy most of the day but was still confused with her friend's situation. She was debating whether Amber was really in love with Liam. She was genuinely worried about her friend.

Shortly after she returned from lunch, her phone rang. She checked the caller, and It was Amber. She smiled as she answered the call.

"Babes are you free this evening?" There was a sign of desperation in Amber's voice.

"Yes, what's up Amber?" Leila asked her friend. When Amber was in town Leila always created time for her best friend.

"Liam wants me to meet his parents and I was wondering if you could come with me." Amber was desperate for her best friend to accompany her.

Leila hesitated and then asked. "Have you asked Liam if it is ok for me to come with you?" She did not want to create any awkward moments.

Amber replied saying that Liam had said that it was perfectly fine. They agreed that Amber would come to Leila's office and wait for Liam to pick them up.

Amber took a taxi to Leila's workplace. She was there a few minutes before Leila finished work. She waited for her friend by her car.

Leila cleared her work and went outside to meet her best friend. She decided not to ask questions. She did not want to freak her friend out.

Liam arrived after a few minutes later and the trio left to meet Liam's parents at the Davis family mansion. The house as expected was massive, and they were met outside by one of Mr. Davis' drivers.

"Hello Andrew." Liam greeted the man standing by the door.

"Hello sir, hello madam and madam." The man greeted the trio.

Liam led Amber and Leila inside the house to meet his parents. Amber showed nervousness and Leila did not understand why.

'Amber is used to rich people and why is she worried now?' Leila wondered.

The face of the lady inside the house brightened up when she saw Liam entering the house.

"Welcome son," she embraced Liam.

"Mum...," Liam addressed her with tenderly love.

It was easy to tell that the two had an exceptionally good relationship.

"Forgive me," said the lady looking at Leila and Amber.

"Come in, sit anywhere you like my dears." She kindly spoke to Amber and Leila.

"Where is dad?" Liam asked his mother moving to sit next to Amber.

Before she could answer Liam's, father appeared from his office. The man had a serious face, and you could tell that Liam feared him.

"How are you sir?" Liam asked.

"I am fine son, how are you?" The man replied taking his seat and his eyes were fixed at the two friends. Liam did not to waste time.

"Mum and dad, I would like you to meet my fiancée Amber." Liam held Amber's hand and introduced her to his parents.

"Amber and Leila meet my parents, Mr. James and Mrs. Sarah Davis." Liam carried on with the introductions. You could tell that there was a degree of fear in him.

"Nice to meet you Amber, and nice to meet you Leila." Liam's mother spoke showing signs of approval.

Liam's father followed suit. "Nice to meet you Amber and Leila." He continued to speak. "Leila who are you?"

Liam was quick to respond. "Sorry dad, Leila is Amber's best friend. They have been friends since high school and are inseparable just like me and Ben." He was nervous.

"But one of them is getting married soon. Are they going to stay together?" Liam's father asked. His eyes were moving from one friend to the other.

Mr. Davis statement shocked the two friends. Amber was becoming more nervous.

"Oh... no Mr. Davis, we are just best friends, we have never stayed together." Leila tried the clarify the situation.

"Amber, I heard that you spend most of your time in Italy is there any particular reason?" The interrogation from Mr. Davis continued. Amber looked up when she heard her name again.

"My company has projects in different countries and right now I have been working on projects in Italy." There was nervousness in Amber's voice.

"Leila do you work abroad as well?" James continued with his military type of questioning.

"No Mr. Davis, I work for a family run accounting company." Leila respectfully replied.

Anyone could tell that the line of questioning was beginning to annoy Liam.

"Why can't you work for big companies?" Mr. Davis asked and Leila could not understand why her personal life had anything to do with Liam and Amber. She felt like telling the man to stop asking her questions.

"Very soon I will be looking into that, I wanted to gain as much experience before I changed jobs." Leila tried hard to be polite.

"Amber your father is Timothy Johnson the famous artist?" James continued questioning Amber. Leila stared at her nervous friend. She was now feeling sorry for her friend.

"Yes...., he is Mr. Davis." Amber answered nervously.

He turned to Leila. "What about you Leila, is your father well known?"

'Concentrate on your future daughter in law!' Leila was cursing this man in her mind. She however did not mind such questions.

"Not really, he runs a local bakery?" Leila replied without any hesitation. She found the man rather interesting.

"I understand." Mr. Davis concluded his questioning.

Liam was not comfortable with the questions his father was asking. He did not stop him for fear that his father might get offended and say something unpleasant.

Throughout the police like interview, Liam kept on looking at his mother. You could tell that he was hopping that she would make her husband stop. To his dismay Liam's mum only asked about the wedding.

"Why did you go for a small wedding?" Sarah asked looking at Amber.

Turning on to her son, "Liam, you're ...... our only son and we really wanted many people to celebrate with us."

"Mum this is what me and Amber want, because it is our wedding." Liam quickly responded. He did not want Amber to respond.

Sarah was quick to agree with her son. "Whatever you say son we will support you." Liam's mother concluded. Sarah was not a difficult person to deal with. She was just happy that her twenty-eight-year-old son had decided to settle down.

Mr. Davis did not say anything more, but just stared at Amber as if he did not trust her. Dinner was served and they ate discussing the wedding as well as other issues.

"Amber, are we going to see you again before the wedding?" Liam's mum asked.

"I will try." Amber replied shyly. "The day is fast approaching and there is still a lot to be done." She wanted her future mother in-law to understand.

"Why did you choose a short period of time to prepare for the wedding?" Liam's father asked staring at Amber. "Are you pregnant?" James shocked everyone with his question.

There was anger in Liam's eyes as he tried to stop his father from further interrogating his future wife.

"Dad, is that necessary? I am the one who chose that time, Amber only agreed because she loves me." Liam tried to protect his fiancée.

Leila was just observing and could tell that Amber just wanted to get the hell out from there. They finished dinner and Liam informed his parents that he had to finish some work which he wanted to present in the morning. The trio left and Liam kept apologizing for his father.

There was dead silence in the car, and Leila was relieved when they dropped her off to pick up her car which she had left at her office.
