Chapter 10 Shadows Revealed

Chapter 11 Whispers in the Silence

/ 1

The festive season was fast approaching. Lights glimmered along London streets, and shop windows were decorated in bright reds and golds. Maya Bennett, however, felt none of the cheer. Between hospital rotations, assignments, and freelance consulting, she had barely noticed the snow settling on the city's edges.
Josh, on the other hand, was already planning. Love had blinded him, as Maya often teased herself silently, and he had made arrangements months in advance. flight tickets were booked for Maya to come over to Bath. He wanted everything perfect. A holiday together. No arguments. No distance. Just them.
He couldn't wait to meet Maya ,he was so obsessed that he planed the visit months away before the holiday .he believed that the far distance was hurting their relationship and he couldn't leave with it , if he does nothing about it .
Maya's thoughts drifted to Sophie, her best friend and Josh's sister. Though Sophie was always on trips cause of her influencing work she still makes out time for Maya.
Sophie was literally the kind of friend that knows all the big guys in London.
she was fine ,tall and couldn't miss gym for a day, her level of lifestyle attract connections to her door step.
i obviously remember Sophie last relationship she was traveling from Sussex to USA to support her man games . Their breakup made the internet i am literally no match in social life to her .
Sophie lived in Sussex, a few hours away, and was planning to move to London after the holidays. Josh had insisted she stay with Maya or Nadia once she relocated, reasoning that it would put his mind at rest knowing his sister was near Maya, it would reassure him that things remained safe and orderly.
Sophie was traveling to Bath a day before Maya's arrival to meet her brother for the holidays. The three of them would be together for the first time in months, and Josh was practically vibrating with excitement.
The night before her flight, Maya's phone rang.
Lucas Thoreau.
She frowned. Late night calls were unusual from him.
"Hello?" Maya said cautiously.
"Ms. Bennett," he began, casual yet precise, "do you have a few minutes?"
She glanced at the clock: 10:45 PM. Why now? she thought, but curiosity got the better of her.
"Sure," she replied.
The conversation began formally, discussing the latest updates on the wellness project. But soon, the dialogue shifted. Lucas's tone softened, not in a romantic way, but something warmer like two people finding a rare, unexpected rhythm in conversation.
Maya found herself laughing more freely than she had in weeks. They discussed deadlines, quirks of the app, even a minor hiccup in content compliance. The conversation flowed naturally. They joked about late-night work habits and the quirks of London commuting.
Hours passed unnoticed. When they finally checked the time, it was 11:30 PM.
"You know," Lucas said lightly, "we could continue this... somewhere quieter."
Maya raised an eyebrow. "Meaning?"
"I mean... my place. Just to finish the discussion. More comfortable."
She laughed softly, shaking her head. "Not tonight, Mr. Thoreau. I need my sleep."
He didn't push. Simply let the comment linger. "Very well. Safe night, Ms. Bennett."
"You too," she replied. Hanging up, she felt a strange flutter of something intrigue, curiosity, perhaps the tension she hadn't realized had been building. She shook her head. It's just conversation. Nothing more.
The next morning, Maya packed her bag for Bath. She was excited to see Josh, to finally have a calm, festive holiday after months of school and work. London faded behind her as the plane sped off , and she allowed herself a rare moment of relaxation.
She didn't notice the subtle twist fate had laid before her.
Unbeknownst to Maya, Josh, in his excitement, had extended his holiday invitation to Lucas Thoreau as well. He didn't know Lucas had any connection to Maya that Lucas was a respected professional, a friend from Paris, they attended the same school , played in the football team and someone interesting to spend a few holiday days with.
Lucas, of course, accepted the invitation. Who misses and opportunity to meet a long time friend .
Maya boarded the plane , her mind buzzing with Josh, Sophie, the holidays, and the rare freedom of leaving London behind. She didn't know that Lucas would soon be on the same path, in the same space with her
Maya leaned against the window, headphones on, soft classical music filling the space between her thoughts. She thought about the past six months Josh's patience, the fights they'd had about intimacy, the late nights she had spent in libraries and hospitals instead of in his arms.
And she thought of Lucas Thoreau. Just a professional acquaintance... nothing more. And yet, somehow, the memory of their conversation last night lingered, unbidden.
Why do I feel like I'm missing something? she asked herself quietly.
She shook her head. Focus. Bath. Josh. Holidays. Nothing else.
But fate, as it often did, had other plans.
Meanwhile, in a sleek apartment overlooking the Thames, Lucas reviewed his calendar for the holiday week. London, Bath... coincidences. Perhaps not. Perhaps opportunities.
He made no decisions yet. No impulsive moves. Observation first, patience always. He noted the little details he had learned her routines, her habits, her calm efficiency and wondered what would happen when she was in a different environment, a more relaxed setting.
Lucas Thoreau didn't know about Josh and Maya. Not yet. And that was perfect.
Because unknowing created more possibilities.
By the time Maya arrived in Bath, the city sparkled under festive lights. Cobblestone streets, warm lamplight, distant carols. The train station was nearly empty, a crisp winter night enveloping her. Sophie has arrived a day before , Josh was already waiting at the airport, and for the first time in months, Maya felt a rare sense of anticipation.
She had no idea Lucas Thoreau was on his way as well.
And she didn't know that the holiday season, which should have been calm, cozy, and predictable, was about to become a subtle game of observation, calculation, and unseen connections a game that would test her, Josh, and even Sophie in ways she couldn't yet imagine.
