Chapter 6 Welcome to Phoenix pack

Mia

My head ached badly as my eyes stirred open. I tried to sit up but strong hands held me down.

"Lay still." A gruffy voice spoke and it took me some seconds to realize it was Edward, and we were on a ride to Phoenix pack.

"What happened?" I asked weakly, trying for the second time to sit up right.

"Stay still, Mia." His voice was firmer, forcing me to relax back... on his lap! The sudden awareness got me blushing.

"You seem to have temporary amnesia?" His voice was cold and the smell of blood and sweat reeked the car.

Were we... Oh my goodness! We were attacked on our way.

"Edward, we were attacked!" My sudden exclamation took him off guard so I was able to release myself from his hold and sit upright.

My head exploded in pain and I groaned loudly.

"One of the things I didn't expect from you was defiance."

I shivered from those words. Did I offend him? I turned to see his reaction but the sight of him took me off guard. His beautiful face was battered with blood and long scratches that ran down to his neck.

Sweat poured out of his skin profusely and he was also injured along his arms.

My gaze shifted to the driver's corner as memories of what had happened played back in my head. The guy that sat next to Edward's beta was no more, but Stewart was still behind the wheel. I could only see his head as he drove so I had no idea how badly injured he was too.

There was a hole in the windshield and I remembered one of the attackers hitting it so hard with something before pulling me out of the car. I could only remember screaming Edward's name before passing out.

"Are we safe?" I said softly as I stared outside through the windows. The sun was rising and we were now in a different pack. I stared as we passed by houses, skyscrapers, restaurants, malls and different buildings.

I was beginning to get emotional that I was now far away from home. Home was kinda like hell but it was still home. Worse of all, I would miss my best friends. Here I knew nobody, and was only a stranger surrounded by strangers as well.

"For now, we are."

For now? Isn't that sick? I looked down to see my dress was torn and what covered me was now a flimsy part of the material that was left.

I was almost killed. We were almost killed in fact, but that wasn't even the end? Have they always been hunted?

"What aren't you telling me?" I tried to act strong but the words came out weak, reflecting my fears.

Edward on the other hand seemed unfazed like nothing had happened or like he had everything under control.

"We would be fine. I have lots of enemies and attacks like that are normal."

My eyes widened in fear. "Are attacks like that normal?" I asked in a weak voice. Maybe I didn't hear him properly.

"Yes, but this would be taken care of. They are always taken care of, so you have nothing to fear."

I swallowed the lump in my throat. What have you done to me, dad? You've brought me right into a warzone!

The rest of the drive was silent but not without tension in the air. I thought of my new life and how my role as Luna would be. Would the people accept me? Would they hate me like they did in my home pack?

What if they find out I'm wolfless? Who would accept a wolfless Luna as their mate? Different questions filled my mind as I pondered while chewing on my bottom lips. I didn't even want to think about my relationship with Edward as that would worsen my headache.

The car came to a halt in front of a white mansion I assumed to be the pack house. Stewart alighted and came to our side to open the door, but Edward beat him to it.

"Get out of my sight." He groaned at his beta before marching into the house.

My mouth fell agape as I watched him disappear into the house.

"He tends to be like that sometimes." Stewart said as he helped me out of the car. "And his attitude isn't over the attack but over his baby."

I frowned, confused at what he meant.

Stewart rubbed the car while staring at the hole in the windshield. "He's more pissed over her."

"Oh." I stared at the car that was worth a fortune.

"Come on, let's go in." Stewart beckoned on me and I followed his lead as he led the way.

It was awkward to walk into a room full of people with the beta of the pack beside me instead of Edward. Everyone kept giving me weird looks as we stopped in the middle of the sitting room.

Stewart cleared his throat. "Pack members of Phoenix pack, behold your new Luna." He bowed at me with outstretched arms and I got flustered.

The rest of the enforcers walked into the room and one of them went ahead to slap Stewart on his head.

"You all look rough." A lady said as she observed the group that had walked in, completely ignoring me.

I felt embarrassed and stared at the floor.

"We were attacked on our way back." Stewart said in explanation.

Everyone began talking as they shared what had happened on the way.

I glanced around wondering what to do with myself and where to go from here. Just then, everyone stilled as someone walked down the stairs. I looked up to see Edward refreshed and in a black shirt and trousers.

His hair was wet and plastered to his face. He beckoned on me with his index finger and I had to force my legs to move.

I stood beside him and he took my hands in his, causing chills to run over my arms and body.

"She's Mia Rogers, daughter of Vincent Rogers. My mate and Luna of Phoenix pack."

The room was quiet before, but now it got real quiet and you would hear the sound of a pin if it dropped. My eyes scanned the room as I watched out for their reaction with my heart in my mouth.

They all wore neutral expressions so I couldn't tell if they were pleased by me or not.

"I expect everyone to obey and respect her as they do to me. Any form of disrespect won't be tolerated. If you do, you're disrespecting me and that won't be tolerated if it comes to my notice."

My insides warmed up at Edward's words. It was the reassurance I needed that I wouldn't be walked over like a doormat. Even though most people didn't look so happy to see me, they may grow to accept me with time. After all, I'm only a stranger.

My eyes landed on a brunette that stood in front. I was shocked by the hateful look she was giving me. She was beautiful and quite voluptuous in the right places. I blinked my eyes... maybe I was making up the looks, but it was still there and she did nothing to hide it.

She sized me from head to toe with a scowl on her face and I became conscious of my torn dress.

"We would have a welcome party tonight but for now, my mate needs to rest." He placed his hand on my back and led me away. I ignored the burn I was feeling from where his hand touched me as the hateful look from the she-wolf stayed etched in my mind.
