The man's gaze was too cold, full of alertness and hostility, like a venomous snake lurking in the dark, assessing for danger.
I had clearly just helped him, so why was he looking at me like that?
Was he feeling humiliated, unable to bear the insult?
Instinctively, Yunice took a step back, lowered her head to adjust her clothes, and deliberately ignored his gaze.
Without her support, the man seemed helpless and had to lean on the black cane hidden behind him.
Yunice had no intention of interfering, but the man exuded an aura of nobility from head to toe. His status was clearly extraordinary.
The people who had captured him obviously did not want any witnesses. That meant I, as a bystander, could also get involved.
I had snuck out today and wanted nothing but to avoid trouble, so helping him was, in a way, helping myself.
Fortunately, the man was paralyzed. No matter what his plans were, as long as I just took the bank card and ran, he would not be able to catch me.
As expected, he did not chase after her.
Yunice relaxed her pace. Now, her mind finally had time to process what had happened. The man's face flashed in her memory, and besides feeling familiar, she also noticed something else.
...There was something strange about the herbal scent on his body.
However, Yunice did not dwell on it. Instead, she rushed to the auction house to buy a box of Alphasirox pills before purchasing a new phone and a SIM card that did not require ID registration.
At that time, Owen and Lily were still at the hospital.
In the hospital ward, Giana was tidying up daily necessities while muttering, "If Mrs. Saunders had come home earlier, Mrs. Elsie would not have fallen ill. Now she has to stay in the hospital for a few more days..."
Owen frowned, looking down the hallway, but Yunice was nowhere to be seen. Annoyed, he snapped, "She's heartless! How precious are her legs that she wouldn't even come to visit?"
Lily's eyes were red from exhaustion. While wiping Elsie's hand, she tried to defend Yunice, "She just got home. Maybe she's tired. Don't be so hard on her."
Owen scoffed, "She eats and sleeps well in the mental hospital. What could she possibly be tired from?"
In this household, the mother has to take care of everyone's daily needs; Elsie has to study and work in place of her incompetent sister; Oscar is busy with research abroad and does not have time to come home; and I myself have to manage the hospital and earn a living for the family.
None of us dare to say we're tired. Yet Yunice, who squanders the family's money while lazing around in a mental hospital, has the nerve to call herself exhausted?
Just then, Giana cheerfully walked over holding a box. "Mr. Owen, this necklace must be very valuable! It's so beautiful!"
She took the necklace out of the box and turned to Elsie. "Let me help you put it on!"
Elsie, thinking it was for her, was overjoyed and sat up happily.
However, before Elsie could put it on, Owen suddenly realized something. Seeing the necklace about to be placed around Elsie's neck, he exclaimed, "That's for Yunny!"
Giana froze. Lily was initially surprised, then her eyebrows slightly furrowed as if she had discovered something.
Elsie's face flushed with embarrassment, and she hurriedly swatted Giana's hand away.
Owen also felt awkward. To ease the tension, he said, "Elsie, this one isn't valuable. I'll buy you a better one next time."
Elsie sighed with envy. "It's not about the price; it's about the meaning behind it. The pendant has three stars-two big stars protecting a small one in the middle, exactly like how you and Oscar take care of your sister... I wish I could be a part of that bond, but I will always be an outsider."
Owen flicked her forehead, coaxing her, "Why compare yourself to her? Oscar and I care about you the most."
Elsie glanced at the necklace Owen had casually put in his pocket, her expression darkening.
If they truly cared about me, they would have given me that necklace to make me happy.
But Owen was already up and calling Giana outside.
In the hallway, Owen stared at Giana coldly. "Remember-you're just a housekeeper. If you're careless again, pack your bags and leave."
Giana felt wronged and tried to argue, "But before, the gifts from you and Mr. Oscar were always for Miss Elsie..."
Owen cut her off sharply, "Do I only have one sister?"
Giana wanted to tell him how Yunice had stolen her phone, but Owen was too annoyed to listen. "I'm going home to get some clothes for Elsie."
When he returned to the Saunders' house, the lights were still on, but Yunice was nowhere to be seen.
Elsie was seriously ill, but Yunice could still sleep soundly?
Owen knocked on Yunice's door. He knocked for a full minute before the door finally opened from inside.
Yunice was wearing an oversized T-shirt, still damp from a recent shower.
Facing her up close, Owen finally noticed something strange-
Yunice's face was unnaturally pale, and she had lost a lot of weight. The oversized T-shirt covered her body, making her look like a fragile paper doll.
Then something else occurred to him.
There was a faint aura of decay surrounding her.
A twenty-year-old girl should be vibrant. Her hair is smooth and flowing, her movements are light and agile, her face is warm with a gentle smile, and she has a pair of bright eyes.
Like Elsie.
But Yunice was not like that. She walked slowly, barely lifting her feet, her gaze lowered. Her hand hesitantly pressed against her stomach, her back hunched. Even a seventy-year-old woman had more energy than her.
A vision of Elsie's grace flashed through Owen's mind, and he snapped in frustration, "This isn't a mental hospital. Stop acting like a grandma on a stroll! Straighten your back!"
Yunice frowned. My internal injuries were already painful, and moving only made them worse. Earlier in the black market, I forced myself to go along with the man's actions. It already felt excruciating.
She tried to explain, "I can't stand straight; it's too-"
Before she could finish the word "painful," Owen grabbed her shoulders and forcefully straightened her, refusing to let her hold her stomach.
Seeing her face turn pale with pain, resisting him, Owen still wouldn't let go. He stubbornly wanted to force her back to her old, confident self.
"I said it hurts! It hurts!" Yunice pushed Owen away, gasping, her eyes cold.
Owen stumbled back two steps, shocked as he held the door frame to steady himself.
"Owen! Yunice! Don't fight!" Elsie coughed, holding her hand as she rushed over with Lily's help.
Owen snapped back to reality and barked at Yunice, "What hurts? Your arms? Your legs? Show everyone! Otherwise, people will think I'm bullying you!"
Yunice did not have any visible injuries.
The mental hospital was skilled at tormenting people without leaving external wounds, ensuring that family members would not notice.
Yunice replied coldly, "I have internal injuries that cause slow bleeding. If you want to see my wounds, you'll have to slice me open and pull them out for display."
She raised her gaze, her eyes frozen. "Do you dare to look?" noveldrama
Lily's eyes immediately turned red. Choking up, she said, "Yunny, your brother cares about you. He would never hurt you. Saying something like that will only break his heart!"
Her tears flowed as she instructed Giana, "Get the car ready. We'll take Yunny to the hospital, just in case she really is sick."
Unexpectedly, Owen was still stubborn. "Yunice, our family owns a hospital. Think before you lie! Internal bleeding alone is incredibly painful, but you haven't yelled once, yet you were strong enough to push me? It seems like you're just making things up!"
