I looked at the bowl of porridge, a tear slipping from the corner of my eye.
"It seems you're thinking about your ex-girlfriend. I never eat cilantro, reminds me too much of past mistakes."
Cilantro was Sonya's favorite.
"Let's get a divorce!"
I was exhausted. Why hold on to a husband who had another woman in his heart?
His eyes were flustered, wanting to explain, but the ringing phone distracted him.
"I won't agree to a divorce. Give up on that idea. I'll explain when I get back, " he said, hastily leaving with the thermal lunch box.
I touched my belly, a bitter smile on my lips: See, he never chooses us.
Downstairs, I bought some soy milk and buns, eating a few bites absentmindedly.
Then, I took a taxi to the hospital.
It was time to visit my dear cousin.
I reached Sonya's hospital room door.
Through the glass window, I saw my mother, showing her affection in a quiet, nurturing way, peeling an apple for Sonya.
Sonya was leaning happily on my brother's shoulder, while my husband, Louis, was playing games with her.
"Louis, protect me! I'm about to be defeated by the enemy!"
Sonya laughed joyfully, looking at him with affection.
I suddenly remembered how I used to be obsessed with that game, hoping Louis would join me as a couple.
He had stared blankly for a moment, saying he didn't know how to play, wasn't interested.
Turns out, it wasn't that he couldn't play, he just didn't want to play with me.
I suppressed my discomfort and pushed the door open.
As soon as Sonya saw me, her expression changed. She dropped the phone and clung to Louis like an octopus.
With tears in her eyes, she pleaded, "Can you let me have Louis back in my life? I can't live without him."
Silence enveloped the room.
Mom and brother said nothing, no one scolding Sonya for being someone who interferes in a marriage.
Louis glanced at me, his eyes uneasy, trying to free his arm, but she held him tightly.
I laughed in anger, staring at Sonya. "Sonya, do you enjoy taking what's mine? Happy to be someone who interferes in a marriage?"
Sonya's mood shifted dramatically.
"We were together long before you came along! We just had an argument, and you shamelessly interfered."
In a fit of distress, she yanked out the IV, a desperate act that alarmed everyone in the room, and slammed her head against the wall, blood streaming from her forehead.
She screamed at me, her face twisted with rage, "Zayne, why do you have to fight with me? Why take Louis away from me?"
Mom and brother snapped out of their silence, rushing to Sonya with worry.
"Sylvia, what's wrong? Let me call the doctor, okay?"
"Sylvia, calm down. I'm here, your brother's always here!"
Watching this scene, my numb heart was pierced once more.
Louis looked at me with disappointment.
"Zayne, what's happened to you? Your sister's in this state, and you're still causing trouble?"
In a moment of heated emotion, Asher slapped me, his words cutting deep with anger and frustration.
"Zayne, how long will you keep this up? Do you want to ruin this family?"
"Sylvia and Louis were meant to be together. You're the one who interfered!"
Mom, torn between comforting Sonya and scolding me, snapped, "Leave this house! You are no longer part of this family!"
