Chapter 6

"Gu Shichuan, let's start over. I'll pretend you never got married, and you can pretend I never betrayed you. I truly love you."

Song Wanwan softened her tone when she saw the serious expression on Gu Shichuan's face.

She had always been as if she were born to it when coaxing him, and he would always fall for it.

In contrast, when Gu Shichuan was angry with me, even if I pulled out all the stops, he never spared me a smile.

The difference between love and indifference was so obvious, yet I was foolish enough to realize it only after I died.

The man who was so stern with me was always gentle with another woman. His boundaries would continuously lower for Song Wanwan.

My heart was riddled with countless pinpricks of pain, and now I no longer cared how Song Wanwan slandered me or how much Gu Shichuan despised me.

"You've just been discharged from the hospital; you should rest early, " Gu Shichuan said, pushing Song Wanwan away. He didn't directly answer her question but left straight away.

After he left, Song Wanwan stomped her foot in anger.

Gu Shichuan went downstairs and looked up at our balcony, which was shrouded in darkness.

I used to leave a light on for him, so no matter how late he returned, that light would illuminate his path. Gu Shichuan visibly froze in surprise.

When he got home and opened the door, the place that hadn't been lived in for over a month greeted him with a coldness. Gu Shichuan frowned.

"Sang Ning, how long are you going to keep sulking? I only took you to court because you owed Wanwan. I wouldn't have done it otherwise."

He shouted into the bedroom, his voice filled with disdain and resentment.

I trailed after him, coldly amused.

Five years of affection couldn't withstand a few words from someone else. Fortunately, I was already dead, or else there would be more days like this. Today, Gu Shichuan could demand my life for Song Wanwan; who knows what he might do tomorrow?

Gu Shichuan searched the house for me. The dishes I had prepared before going to the hospital were still on the table, now moldy and unrecognizable.

It had been our fifth wedding anniversary. I waited and waited, only to be met with a court's mandatory ruling.

Even without asking, I knew that Gu Shichuan was comforting Song Wanwan, who was about to give birth.

Song Wanwan said she was afraid of the surgery, so Gu Shichuan held her hand tightly, telling her not to worry.

Meanwhile, I faced death alone, needing Gu Shichuan the most, but he was rooting for someone else's survival.

Gu Shichuan frowned at the mess on the dining table and took out his phone to call me.

He dialed once, then twice. I lost count of how many times he called. He was seldom this relentless. To be precise, Gu Shichuan never called me if there wasn't a reason.

Today, he seemed unusually patient.

But there was no one to answer that call anymore.

When he couldn't reach me, Gu Shichuan sent a voice message on WeChat.

"Sang Ning, haven't you had enough of this tantrum? Look at the state of the house! I haven't even settled the score with you, and you've run off first. I give you an hour to get back here, or we're getting a divorce!"

Divorce?

Divorce would have been great. If Gu Shichuan had suggested it earlier, I would have agreed, and things wouldn't have ended this way.

Soon, Gu Shichuan's phone vibrated, and his eyes visibly brightened, only to dim again when he saw it was a message from Song Wanwan.

I don't know if I was imagining things.

"Ah Chuan, I left something at the hospital. Could you pick it up for me?"

Gu Shichuan quickly replied with a yes. While putting on his jacket, he paused at the door, looked back at the house, his eyes unreadable.

I smiled bitterly. It was already late at night, yet Gu Shichuan was always at Song Wanwan's beck and call. Once, I had severe stomach pain and asked him to take me to the hospital, but he complained it was too far.

Now, is the hospital not far anymore?

Gu Shichuan drove to the hospital and found the room where Song Wanwan had stayed, only to be greeted by a nurse.

I recognized her; she was there during my surgery and had seen the live broadcast of my court case on TV. She sympathized with me.

When the nurse recognized Gu Shichuan, she scoffed.

"What? Only now do you remember your wife who died on the operating table?"

Gu Shichuan froze, looking at the nurse in disbelief.

"What did you say? Who died?"

The nurse looked at him as if he were an idiot.

"Your wife, Sang Ning. I can't understand how you could be a husband. Your wife had kidney failure, and you still made her donate a kidney. Wasn't that a death sentence for her?"
