Chapter 2

Gu Shichuan gently caressed Song Wanwan's face, as if he were cradling a delicate piece of porcelain.

"It's so good that you're alive... so good, " he whispered, his voice thick with emotion.

His bloodshot eyes revealed that he hadn't slept all night, worrying over Song Wanwan.

But in his concern for her, did he ever think that I was already dead?

Song Wanwan forced a pale smile.

"Ah Chuan, I'm sorry for making you worry. Where's Sang Ning? Is she still upset with me? I should apologize to her right away."

As she spoke, she attempted to sit up, but her frail condition was obvious to anyone-except Gu Shichuan.

True to form, Gu Shichuan gently pressed her back down, affectionately patting her head.

"You little fool, it's Sang Ning who should apologize. You've done nothing wrong. You're always so kind, and that's why people take advantage of you."

A nurse watching them couldn't help but tease, "You two are such a sweet couple."

She then turned to Song Wanwan, "During your surgery, your husband waited in the corridor all night without leaving your side."

Song Wanwan blushed, while Gu Shichuan's expression briefly froze, but he made no move to correct the misunderstanding.

The nurse then shifted the topic with a deep sigh, "Unlike the patient on the operating table next door, who was alone from the moment they arrived. Even in death, there wasn't a single family member to take care of the body. So pitiful."

Gu Shichuan's expression softened a bit, and hope flickered in my heart. If he could deduce that the unfortunate person was me, would he show some mercy and take care of my body?

After a long pause, Gu Shichuan merely sighed, "That really is pitiful."

My hope faded, and I laughed bitterly at myself. Gu Shichuan's heart and mind were entirely consumed by Song Wanwan. How could he possibly think of me?

Gu Shichuan didn't linger on the topic. Instead, he followed the nurse as they moved Song Wanwan into her room.

As they passed the operating room where my body lay, he hesitated, glancing inside. My cold body lay there, feet facing the door, preventing anyone from seeing my face.

Yet, if Gu Shichuan looked closely, he would see the scar on my ankle-a mark from when I once saved him.
