Chapter 5 5. Someone was listening

Fabian

The feeling at the airport each time I arrive in Los Angeles reminds me of home and my wife maybe. It's the monthly dinner meeting again and my parents had specifically stated they want to see me. I couldn't miss it despite being busy in London.

"To the estate or Jayla's office sir." My driver asked, interrupting my thoughts.

"Jayla is at home so drive home."

Jayla had taken a day off from work today and had wanted to sleep all through the day. At home she laid on her bed cuddling her pillow so hard. I hesitated before placing a gentle kiss on her forehead then headed to my office.

Jayla is beautiful, smart, ambitious and perfect for every man. Two months into the marriage and I was already an expert at staying away from my wife and home.

The paperwork I was reviewing kept blurring before my eyes but I continued as the deadline was near and I couldn't let it slide.

A sudden knock on the door brought back my attention.

"When did you get in, won't you rest for a while." Jayla peeked in, she was dressed in a silk robe that clung firmly to her body and made my throat itch, her hair slightly damp from the shower.

I took in the view and forced a smile. "I will rest later, this Dever deal needs to be wrapped up."

Her eyebrows arched forward. " Dever? send me the details of the deal, I will look into it, it rings a bell."

She said and closed the door behind.

I have been seated all day in my office. It was past evening, and Jayla came back to my office to pull me out to bed but I told her to go ahead.

Disappointment gleamed in her eyes but she nodded. After much hesitation, she closed the door behind her.

I sighed and leaned back in my chair. When I had gone through half of the work, tired already I closed my laptop and headed to bed as fast my leg could carry me.

I snuggled Jayla to a hug as I climbed the bed. She opened her eyes and smiled while she traced her fingers to my groin areas. I realised what she wanted and removed her hand.

My phone ringing woke me up from my sleep the next morning. It was my mum and she was ready to see me.

Jayla was out of bed already, I showered and found her in the kitchen.

"I made breakfast." She said with a broad smile. Her chest was exposed due to the nightgown she wore. Her plumpy breast was easily seen and her nipple poked through. I averted my gaze from her body and focused on the sandwich.

"Keep it warm for later, Megan needs me urgently."

"Is it about Dever deals? I have made a few phone calls. You don't need to bother yourself." she said with all confidence but when my mum calls, it was always unpredictable and I needed to go see her.

"I don't know what it is, but let me go find out." I opened the bar and picked out a wine then headed out to the building.

The living room smelled of whiskey. My parents must have been drinking their life away since sunset.

"Look at my big boy, I have missed you" Mary, our long-time chef, drew me to a tight hug.

"This is for you Mary." I gave her the wine.

"Thank you son, I'm heading to the store for a few shopping, the driver is waiting." she pointed her finger to where mum and dad were sitting.

My parents were already in a deep conversation, both of their expressions were very unreadable as they gulped in their drinks.

"Mum, Dad." I called out and dropped on the couch beside my dad.

My mum's eyes met mine and she gave me a sharp look that left me startled.

"Can you drop that look and spill it out." I said unfazed.

"You're been so careless, very unserious." mum said suddenly.

I frowned and turned to my dad, surprised, but he focused his gaze at mum.

"What do you mean mum?" I asked and she dropped the glass of wine she was holding. Her neatly manicured fingers adjusted her eye glass while she sat down back.

"It will take a little time before she finds out."

"You barely spend time at home, you don't take her out for a couples date." mum continued.

"She's very smart and will find out soon if you don't retrace your steps and focus on the goal."

A cold sensation ran down my spine. My father looked at me.

"Do you remember the last time you slept together?" Dad asked me but I ignored him.

"I thought you called me here for the Dever deal." I said, trying to change the topic. My mum stood up pacing around, she stopped and the glaring look that clouded her face made me know she was serious.

"Do you want me to repeat myself again?" She asked sternly.

"You don't have to worry, I will handle it." I said, trying to rub off the tension from my neck.

My mother wasn't having it, I looked at my father for support maybe but he avoided my gaze.

"I will say it again, Fabian if you don't fix this, I will fix you myself if she finds out." mum said in a low tone. I knew this was a last warning from mum and any further warning could be worse.

"You haven't given me the document." she reminded me.

"Yes about that mum I...I." the words struggled to come out of my mouth.

I stood up and sighed, ran a hand through my hair. I took in a deep breath while forcing my expression to remain neutral as I quickly processed what to say to mum.

I turned slightly to my dad but a shadow behind the door corner caught my attention.

Someone was listening.
