"You're not paid to think," Garrick said coldly. "You're paid to lead. And the people need to see you preparing for war."
Kael finally turned. "Is that all you want? More blood?"
Garrick narrowed his eyes. "We don't get to choose peace when the enemy still breathes."
"She's not the enemy," Kael said firmly. "Her people-what's left of them-they just want to live."
"They're rogues, Kael."
"No. They were a pack. You wiped them out."
Silence stretched between them.
Finally, Garrick spoke, his voice like ice. "You think I regret what I did?"
Kael didn't answer.
"I did what I had to do to protect our land, our people. That was my duty."
"No," Kael said. "You did it for power."
Garrick's face twisted with fury. "You're sounding like one of them."
Kael stepped forward. "I'm not one of them. But I'm not like you, either. And I won't help you finish what you started."
For a second, Kael thought his father might strike him.
But instead, Garrick turned and walked away.
His parting words echoed behind him.
"You better be careful, boy. Loyalty keeps you alive. Defiance gets you buried."
Meanwhile – Rogue Territory, Whisper Ridge
Aurora paced outside her tent, her arms wrapped around herself. Night had fallen, and with it came the cold. But she hardly noticed.
She hadn't heard from Kael in days.
Not since he found her near the river.
She shouldn't care.
She told herself over and over.
But something inside her was changing. And it scared her more than anything.
Finn stepped out of the shadows. "You're thinking about him."
Aurora stopped pacing. "Do you ever get tired of knowing everything?"
He shrugged. "You're loud when you worry."
She smiled a little, but it faded quickly. "Do you think he's different?"
"I don't know him."
"I feel it," she said softly. "He wants peace. I think he hates what his father did."
Finn looked at her, serious now. "Then use it."
Aurora blinked. "What do you mean?"
"Kael has power. Influence. If he really wants peace... maybe he can help us from the inside."
Aurora shook her head. "You want me to trust him?"
"I want you to try," Finn said. "Or we'll all die in the next war."
The Next Morning – A Secret Meeting
Aurora waited in the clearing where it all began-the place she found Kael bleeding in the snow.
She wasn't sure he'd come.
Not after everything.
But then she heard it.
A soft crunch of boots on frost.
Kael stepped into view, wearing a black cloak, hood pulled low.
She stared at him. "You came."
"I had to."
They stood there, unsure, both remembering the last time they met.
"I found the letter," Kael said finally. "From your father. Begging the Council for mercy."
Aurora's breath caught.
"So it's true," he continued. "They didn't start the war. We did."
She looked down. "I've known for years. But no one would believe me."
"I believe you."
Their eyes met.
Kael stepped closer. "I want to fix this. I want peace. But I can't do it alone."
Aurora studied him. "What are you willing to risk?"
"Everything."
Silence again.
Then Aurora took a breath. "There's something I didn't tell you."
Kael frowned. "What?"
"There's a prophecy. From my bloodline. About the 'Wolfborn Flame.'"
"I've heard whispers," Kael said. "But it's just an old myth."
She shook her head. "It's real. The magic I used to heal you... that was it. The Flame is waking. And if I don't learn how to control it, I could destroy everything."
Kael stepped forward, his voice soft. "Then I'll help you."
Her eyes widened. "Why?"
"Because the Moon Goddess made you my mate," he said simply. "And because I don't want to lose you."
Back at Silverfang – A Dangerous Discovery
Kael returned to the fortress under cover of darkness. He slipped into the armory, locking the door behind him.
He needed proof. Something to show the Elders.
As he rifled through crates of weapons, something caught his eye-a black scroll sealed with wax.
He opened it.
His blood ran cold.
"Phase Two begins in five days. Wipe them out. Burn Whisper Ridge. No survivors."
The scroll was signed with Garrick's seal.
Kael's stomach turned.
His father was preparing for another massacre. A final purge.
And no one knew.
He folded the scroll, tucked it into his jacket, and ran.
He had to warn Aurora.
Whisper Ridge – The Alarm
Aurora was tending the herb garden when the horn sounded.
One long note. Then two short blasts.
"Messenger at the border!" someone shouted.
She ran.
By the time she reached the gate, Kael was already there, panting, bleeding from a cut above his eye.
"Kael?" she said, breathless.
He held up the scroll. "Your pack is in danger."
Tamsin stepped forward. "You think we're stupid enough to trust him again?"
"He came alone," Aurora said.
Kael shoved the scroll into her hands.
She read it.
Then her face went pale.
"He's telling the truth."
Tamsin snatched the scroll, read it, and cursed.
"They're coming to wipe us out," Aurora said. "In five days."
"Then we hit them first," Tamsin growled.
"No," Aurora said. "We do something better."
She looked at Kael.
"You said you want peace. Now's your chance to prove it."
Later That Night – The Plan
They met in secret, inside an abandoned chapel deep in the woods. Just Aurora, Kael, Finn, and Tamsin.
"We can't take Garrick head-on," Kael said. "He has more men. More weapons."
"But he doesn't have truth," Finn replied.
Kael laid the black scroll on the altar. "If the Elders see this, they'll turn on him."
"Assuming they believe it's real," Tamsin said.
Aurora stepped forward. "Then we give them something more."
They all looked at her.
"The Flame."
Kael frowned. "You can't control it yet."
"Maybe not fully," she said. "But enough to show them I'm not a threat. That rogues aren't monsters."
Finn crossed his arms. "And if it backfires?"
Aurora looked him in the eye. "Then I'll burn alone."
