Chapter 3 THE BEGINING OF IT ALL

few years later, Emma and Adams had finished their degree program. Emma was now a registered nurse working in one of the biggest hospitals in their state, Adams took a per time job as he was doing his masters in mechanical engineering, life was going fine and well until Adam began to behave strangely. he became very possessive of Emma and never wanted to see her around other guys. when Emma asked why or talked back at him that she cant stop talking to other men because her profession requires her to interact with everyone she come across with, he would beat her and trample's on her.

one day Emma came back from work very late because of an emergency that occurred . Emma was through with her days work when a 65 year old male patient , Mr. Johnson collapses in the hospital while receiving treatment for pneumonia. Emma who was walking near the ward of the patient heard the man panting and struggling for his life she quickly ran to the scene, and assessed the situation, she started by checking if he was breathing well but discovered he was unresponsive and pulseless, quickly she alerted the hospitals emergency team while still struggling to resuscitate Mr. Johnson. Emma initiated CPR following the American heart association guidelines, and made conscious effort to communicate with Mr. Johnson. when the emergency team arrived luckily Mr. Johnson was still conscious even if not fully, so they carried out the necessary actions to stabilize him and Emma assisted them in giving the right medications to him, and she closely monitored his vital signs and made sure he was ok before she could leave him. Emma was stressed out and tired and all she wanted to do was rest, only for her to get home and meet trouble.

as Emma opened the door, she saw Adams sitting in her living room, with a very angry facial expression and with a vase on his hand. Emma in shock asked , what are you doing here at this hour shouldn't you be asleep in your own apartment. will you keep quiet Adams shouted as he threw the vase at her, luckily for her she was able to dodge the vase but got scratched at the side of her legs. why are you just coming to your house, you didn't have night sift today so who were you with, i have been waiting since 5pm and this is 12;33am Emma he yelled as he dragged her by her hair, are you seeing another man, do you want to leave me and abandoned me. you know i love you , why are doing this to me? i told you we should get married but you kept postponing it Emma don't leave me then his mood changed from been aggressive and he began to beg, and cry that Emma should not breakup with him that he was scared of been alone.

Emma who was a health practitioner knew something was wrong with Adams mentally because of his sudden switch in emotions evetime they got into a fight. because the fight were consistent and usually leads to him incurring pains her and then later he starts crying, she had tried all she could to discover what the actual problem was but to no avail so she decided to open up to someone who was superior to her. Emma went close to Adams and told him that she wasn't going to leave him and she placed him on her couch to sleep.

the next day Emma got dressed and told Adams that he should follow her to her workplace, but Emma's aim was to see a psychiatrics' doctor so that she could know what was really wrong with Adams.

The following day they went to the hospital, when they got to the hospital, she asked Adams to take a sit at the reception that she was coming. she then walked up to one of her male colleagues to enquire about Dr Moore if she was around, and she spent over 5 minutes talking to him . immediately Adams walked up to them already angry asking her what she was doing with a guy, to avoid embarrassment and the usual beating she always received from him due to issues like this , she immediately said nothing and apologized and left the place to go into the Dr Moore office because he had told her that she was around and he will help her to tell Dr Moore that she was coming with her husband for medical checkup. when they got into the office, Dr Moore welcomed them with a very warming approach . Nurse Emma how are you doing, i heard about how you helped in the case of Mr. Johnson, that is a very good work , keep it up okay.

so how may i help you Dr Moore asked. Emma took a deep sign wondering and thinking if she actually made the right decision by bringing Adams to be checked, but she couldn't help her curiosity anymore and she began to voice out, ma i came here in regards to my fiancée, we have been dating or over 5 years now and we are about to get married , but all of a sudden his attitude has began to change, he shouts, he breaks things, he beats me at every slightest chance he gets and then he switches emotions as though he was breathing. what is wrong with you Emma, Adams asked , is that why you brought me here to insult me in front of your superior, immediately Adams who was calm became aggressive as a lion who has been starved for days. he began to slap and throw things at Emma, and non of them could stop him. Dr Moore had to call the security before he was given an injection and laid to sleep.

do you see what i was talking about Emma lamented to Dr Moore i receive this kind of treatment every single time i make the slightest movement, i am even scared to sleep with my eyes closed because he could barge in to my apartment at any single time, it is like as though i am been punished for a crime i know nothing about.

Emma calm down, breathe, please call some of the nurses to treat her wounds Dr Moore said to the security present. Adams had injured her with the stapler he found on top of Dr Moore desk. hmmmm she signed i have seen this kind of mental illness once in my 28 years of practice and that was even during my internship, this is the first one i am seeing as a doctor. i have studied your husbands physical appearance and he is on point, his relation with others is okay also but when it comes to you, he is scared and wants to make sure you are put in a place where you wont ever leave him because he is scared of one major thing abandonment.

i am sorry to say nurse Emma, your fiancé is suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder(BPD). It is a rare meta disorder that makes the person involved emotionally instable, that is why you can see that he suddenly changes his mood at the slightest opportunity he gets. they also usually have impulsive behavior, they always want to engage in self destructive activities, they have difficulty in maintaining healthy relationships, they have difficulty in trusting people even their loved ones , that is why he always gets infuriated when he sees you with another guy like him ,and lastly they fear abandonment. most at times when they are left alone they usually graduate to the point of turning to serial killers in order to take revenge. so my dear i will advice you take immediate actions to save your life as for him we will keep him in check and make sure he is treated well in our psychiatry ward. unknown to both of them that Adams had regain consciousness and ran out of the hospital. thank you very much ma i will do as you have instructed, Emma said and she left the hospital with a sign of relief that Adams has been kept hostage and would be treated.

soon enough Emma got home, as she opened the gate she felt something was off, because her door was slightly opened, who is there she shouted as she opened the door widely to have a peep into the house before entering, only for her to be dragged in wit force and the door was shut, Emma began to struggle for her life as she noticed that her house had been turned upside down, she struggled to see because all the lights of the house and curtains had been put off and closed respectively. she had not seen the face of the person tormenting her, as she was dragged by the leg up the staircase to her room. then immediately she heard a familiar voice saying, Emma , Emma , Emma, you thought you could get rid of me easily, no way my love, today we are getting married and you would be mine for ever, that was when it dawned on Emma that her worst nightmare just began. Adams ran away from the hospital and kidnapped a priest who was pastoring in a nearby church close to her house to wed him and Emma . so when he brought her to the room upstairs he gave her a wedding dress to put on, and she wore it with fear. then he asked the priest to join them in holy matrimony, as he was about rounding up , the finial question was , Emma do you take Adams to be your lawfully wedded husband and Emma couldn't answer, she began to beg Adams, Adams please lets go back to the hospital you're not mentally well, you need to be treated , i promise if you get well after treatment we will get married. this statement angered Adams and immediately he began to beat her, during this time, Adams was no longer paying attention to the priest, so he seized this opportunity and then ran out of the house. immediately he called the police but Emma was already far gone, he had beaten her to the point that she was unrecognizable and not fully conscious, blood was gushing through every openings in her head, her eyes where swollen red, all she could see was darkness and she thought of what went wrong in her life and she regretted entering this relationship in the first place. little did she know that this was just the beginning. the police came to the scene and arrested Adams and Emma was rushed to the hospital.
