Chapter 4 Vanished in Light

Carter had never been a fan of horror or basically anything else that instills crippling fear into the hearts of people but that didn't mean he couldn't handle a little abnormality. He considered himself a smart person even when he was faced with challenges he couldn't overcome.

It was worthy to note that this would be the first time Carter didn't know what to do or how to act. He wasn't scared. He was not particularly afraid too. It just happened that he didn't know what to do.

But something else was glaring obvious and that was - he would protect Eleanor at all costs.

Eleanor on the other hand could not wrap her head around everything that was happening. From the strange sounds she was hearing outside, to the flickering of the lights and then the noise the chandeliers were making.

It was all so strange to her.

And because of that she allowed fear to dominate her heart and mind.

Perspiration slowly trickled from her forehead to her cheek. In the confines of her ribs her heart beat faster and her pulse spiked like she was running a marathon race.

"You have to calm down Eleanor" Carter whispered holding Eleanor desperately to his body.

He felt her nod against his side but the unease in his body still remained.

All of a sudden a creature appeared few feet away from where they stood. Carter's eyes widened and it suddenly became clear on what he had to do. The creature loudly snarled, snapping its razor sharp teeth towards them.

Eleanor screamed and held onto Carter tighter. In an attempt to protect her, Carter pushed her behind him while he prepared his mind for a change he had not done in months. He widened his stance and allowed the other side of him to take over.

The sickening sound of bones breaking and re-structuring filled the air as his body prepared to morph into a Lycan wolf.

His hands and legs turned to paws and a furry tail danced at his behind. Razor sharp teeth protruded from his mouth along with a long pale pink tongue.

Eleanor watched in horror as furs rapidly replaced Carter's skin.

She didn't know what she was looking at. Fear blinded her eyes and crippled her thoughts. All she could think of was that she was face to face with a monster.

She took a staggering step back as a large black wolf stood gallantly in the place that Carter had just been standing. A loud scream ripped through her throat and before the wolf could react she turned on her heels and ran for the bedroom.

The wolf lunged at the strange creature with its strong jaw open and ready to attack just before he could bite down on its target the creature vanished again.

Carter shifted back to his human form looking haphazardly around the room. When he was sure the creature was not in sight he turned on his heels and ran to look for Eleanor.

"Eleanor!" he screamed running towards their bedroom.

Fear filled his heart when he did not hear her voice. Panic set in and a million and one thoughts of what could have happened to her in the time that she ran away filled his head.

"Eleanor," he yelled frantically.

Finally he reached the door of their bedroom and skidded to a halt at the door.

In haste he kicked open the door and rushed in. He stopped in his tracks staring unbelievably at the scene before him.

His Eleanor lay on the floor lifeless.

Motionless. Unconscious. Nothing at that point could signify that she was still alive.

"Eleanor," he whimpered falling to his knees.

Devastated, he raised a hand to touch her skin that was slowly turning pale. His hand barely skimmed the surface of her skin when a bright light from the necklace she always wore illuminated the room.

Reflexively, he covered his eyes from the white light. In the blink of an eye the bright light vanished along with Eleanor's body. Her body was no more there he realized.

Carter froze and stared at the empty space Eleanor's body was just occupying. She wasn't there anymore. He rubbed at his eyes unbelievably.

"Eleanor!"

Any one from a mile away could hear the raw agony and pain in his voice.

Eleanor could not have gone like that right?

Something was terribly wrong.

How?

Where did her body go to?

And why was all this happening?

All of those questions and more filled his head.

Confusion and panic was setting in to his mind at an alarming pace. For once in his life he didn't care about losing his cool. Besides the only thing that made sense in his life was just snatched away from him

"What the fuck is happening?" Carter roared searching every corner of the room for Eleanor.

When he was sure she wasn't in the room, he ran outside the room searching all the other places he knew Eleanor loved to stay thinking that maybe he'd find her there

He searched everywhere painstakingly ignoring the concerned looks of his staff that had come out to see what the commotion was all about.

But his search yielded nothing.

She wasn't anywhere in the house.

He clutched at his chest as he roamed the hallways.

Why did he feel like he just lost the only priceless thing in his life?

What would become of him without Eleanor?

Like a mad man he ran outside the mansion dashing to the back of the house where the forests were. He knew somehow that his Eleanor could not have died like that.

If she really died why did her body vanish?

And if she isn't dead where could her body be?

"I'm not going to lose her," he mumbled remembering how he once lost someone that was his whole world.

With a determined mind, he ran into the forests in his wolf form with only a single train of thought in his mind – to find Eleanor.
