Katelyn was trembling all over, her hands clenched into fists at her sides, her long, delicate nails digging painfully into her palms.
After a long pause, she forced a smile that was anything but genuine. "Sister, you've changed. You're so harsh with your words now."
"All these years, living with Aunt Gill outside, you must have suffered a lot, right?"
Katherine remained unfazed by Katelyn's insincere provocation. "No matter how much suffering, it's all thanks to your mother who made questionable choices."
Katelyn replied," I know you hate my mom, but back then she was just a divorced woman with a child, a pitiful soul who couldn't refuse the help your father offered."
Watching Katherine's expression, Katelyn continued," Regarding Nolan's incident back then, my mom felt guilty too. She just saw your father wanted to... Ah!"
A sharp scream followed the loud sound of a slap.
Katelyn clutched her face, collapsing in disbelief in front of the sink.
Katherine's hand was still tingling, but thinking of her brother's countless surgeries over the years, she felt no regret for the slap.
A commotion quickly gathered at the restroom entrance.
Someone shouted," Mr. Murphy is here!"
As the sound of leather shoes approached, Katherine's right shoulder was forcefully bumped.
She watched Vincent stride over to Katelyn, kneeling beside her, and she smirked silently.
The apple doesn't fall far from the tree. After all these years, Katelyn had truly mastered her mother's skills.
"Vincent," Katelyn sobbed, tears streaming down her face as she moved her hand from her swollen cheek to grip Vincent's arm.
"My foot hurts so much, I think I twisted it. Please take me to the hospital. I have a performance next month."
Vincent supported her elbow with his hand. "What happened?"
Katelyn replied," I'm sorry, I said something wrong and upset Miss Gill, which is why she hit me."
"No matter what you said, it doesn't justify her hitting you!"
Vincent lifted Katelyn into his arms, his dark eyes meeting Katherine's gaze.
He commanded," Apologize!"
Katherine's breath caught, her eyelashes fluttered, and her lips pressed tighter together.
"Forget it," Katelyn murmured softly, leaning into Vincent's embrace. "Vincent, I think Miss Gill didn't mean it. Let's go to the hospital first."
Vincent continued to stare at Katherine. "You better hope Kate's foot is okay."
With that, he carried Katelyn out, making no effort to avoid Katherine.
In the cramped restroom, Katherine had to step aside, her lower back hitting the sink.
"Where does she get the nerve to hit the future CEO's wife?"
"Miss Todd is so pitiful."
"Judging by Mr. Murphy's anger, someone might get fired."
"Isn't she usually smart? Why is she acting so irrationally now? Isn't she afraid of angering Mr. Murphy and getting blacklisted in a bustling city like Sacford?"
"Exactly, being in a delicate position requires discretion. Otherwise, this road will come to an end."
Showing deference?
Katherine scoffed internally.
She, Katherine, could bow to her boss for money and survival, could bow to difficult and disgusting clients, but she would never show deference to Katelyn.
Until the end of the workday, Vincent and Katelyn didn't return to the company.
Despite the constant gossip and sneaky glances from colleagues, Katherine remained composed, handling her work like an emotionless machine.
Leaving the company building, Katherine instinctively headed to the roadside.
She disliked driving, so Vincent had arranged a driver to pick her up every day to take her back to Maple Villa.
The car's spot was fixed, always waiting for her in advance.
But now, the spot was empty.
Just as her heart began to feel a pang of discomfort, a brand-new black sedan came into view, parking precisely in the spot meant for her car.
