With shaky steps, Stella walked out of the doctor's office. Her world seemed to collapse. The man she loved-who she had sworn allegiance to-had stabbed her in the back. Even the child she had cared for and loved wholeheartedly was not his flesh and blood. The child was the fruit of an affair.
While her mind was in turmoil, her cell phone rang. It was an incoming message from Jason:
"Stella, I have to go to the office. I have some important business to take care of."
Stella stared at the phone screen for a while, then closed it without replying.
When her heart was tired and hurt, she usually went to her in-laws' house. It was a place where she felt like she had parents again, since hers had passed away. It was a place where she could pour out all her burdens, including her personal wounds.
"Rafael's health is improving. I should go to Mrs. Barta's house to calm down," he muttered, trying to brace himself.
She immediately drove to her in-laws' house. However, when she arrived, she saw that Jason's car was already parked in the yard.
"Jason? Didn't he say he was at the office?" Stella muttered suspiciously.
She stepped slowly and pressed her ear against the wall by the window, wanting to confirm what was really going on.
"Mother, I've brought the folder you asked for. For now, I can only retrieve half of Stella's wealth," came Jason's voice, accompanied by a light laugh.
"Good. Keep making her fall in love with you, Jason. The deeper the love, the easier everything will be," Mrs. Barta replied calmly.
In that instant, Stella felt as if her heart had almost stopped beating. Her knees went weak. The people she loved and trusted were conspiring against her. Even her mother-in-law, the one she had been leaning on, was the mastermind behind it all.
"It can't be... Mother? Why?" she whispered, barely audible.
She wanted to leave immediately, but her steps halted when she heard another familiar voice.
"Honey, you're sleeping here tonight. Let that fat lady take care of the hospital!" The voice sneered, and a chuckle followed.
"But Rafael" Jason replied hesitantly.
"I told you. I told him you were busy with your project. He believed me," Mary replied with a satisfied tone. Mary replied with satisfaction.
Jason joined in the laughter.
"That's right. She won't suspect anything."
Deg.
Stella's steps froze. It was Mary's voice. The woman she had kicked out-the woman she hated-was now inside her in-laws' house. Was she living with Jason? Did Mrs. Barta know everything?
Stella put her hands over her ears again, hoping it was all just a bad dream.
"Does Stella know we donated blood to Rafael?" Mary asked.
"No, she doesn't. I'll make sure our identities remain secret. She'll never know," Jason replied. Jason replied.
Mary then hugged Jason from behind.
"So, when are you going to divorce that fat woman?" she whispered seriously.
"Soon. I just need some time."
Pruk.
A small voice was heard. Mary immediately released his embrace.
"Did you hear something fall?" she asked, looking around.
Outside, Stella was stunned her car keys had fallen out by accident. Panicking, she ran to her car and hit the gas without looking back.
Inside the car, she began to cry.
"Jason, how could you do this to me? After all the love and trust I've given you?" she whimpered. Tears flowed freely, leaving an unhealable wound.
The betrayal was too deep. The wound was too sharp.
