Chapter 7 I'm Not That Bored

"Why would I bother disciplining them? They're not even worth my time."

Without a moment's hesitation, Madelyn shot back with a sharp retort.

The two maids had assumed that, faced with Jason's scolding, Madelyn would be so frightened that she'd immediately apologize. But her reaction left them completely stunned.

Madelyn cast a cold glance at Jason. "I can't believe you still keep maids who steal. Haven't you noticed your tie clips often go missing? Maybe you should check second-hand websites to see if your tie clips are being sold there."

Jason's face darkened instantly, his sharp gaze sweeping toward the two maids.

Madelyn curved her lips into a frosty smile, then turned to head upstairs to grab her belongings.

But just as she turned, she heard the low, anger-laden voice behind her. "You're angry, so you're trying to spread rumors about the divorce?"

His company's PR department had just reported that several media outlets had received rumors about their impending divorce.

They were scrambling to take down the news, but there were so many articles online that controlling the narrative was proving impossible.

Madelyn had no idea what Jason was talking about and responded indifferently," I wouldn't stoop that low."

She quickly packed her things, but as soon as she left Jason's house, her phone rang. It was her mother, Sharon.

Madelyn had already guessed why the Clark family was calling her and had resigned herself to it. Initially, she didn't want to go back, but after some thought, she realized this was the perfect opportunity to sever ties. So, she returned home.

When she pushed open the door, her father Roger, her mother Sharon, her brother Connor, and her sister Rebecca were all seated in the living room.

Rebecca sat with her head lowered, occasionally sniffling, her eyes red and swollen-clearly, she had just been crying, but there was a hint of calculation in her expression.

The moment Madelyn appeared, Roger's furious voice rang out.

"Madelyn, what kind of trouble have you been causing these past few days? Your sister's relationship with Evan is in trouble, and it's all your fault! Now apologize to your sister, and then come with me to the Powell family to apologize!"

Roger had always been the strict, authoritarian father whose word was law.

In the past, Madelyn had been somewhat intimidated by him. But now, she merely let out a faint chuckle, completely unfazed by his anger.

"I didn't come back to apologize. I came to tell you that I'm cutting ties with the Clark family. From now on, your affairs have nothing to do with me."

"What did you just say?"

"Cut ties?!"

Roger and Sharon's faces changed instantly-one was shocked, the other furious.

Roger was so enraged that he was trembling. "You're throwing a tantrum over this? Do you know how much we've spent on you since you came back to the Clark family? Now you want to cut ties? Fine! Pay us back the money we've spent on you-five million-and I'll let you leave!"

"Five million?"

Madelyn let out a cold laugh.

She had returned to the Clark family at eighteen, and it had only been five years since then. Had they really spent a million a year on her? Ridiculous.

"Madelyn, don't upset Mom and Dad. Their health can't handle the stress!"

Rebecca's voice trembled as if she were on the verge of tears, but there was a glint of smugness in her eyes.

"Rebecca, don't bother trying to persuade her," Connor said angrily, glaring at Madelyn. "If she wants to leave, let her! She thinks she's so capable? Let's see how she survives without the Clark family!"

"Madelyn, how could you say such a thing? I carried you for nine long months and gave birth to you with so much pain..." Sharon began, her voice trembling with emotion. But Madelyn cut her off.

"You gave birth to me, then lost me, and poured all your maternal love into Rebecca."

If she had felt even a shred of warmth from the Clark family, things wouldn't have come to this.

But not only had they failed to treat her well, they had only ever sought to use her for the family's benefit.

"I can repay every penny you've spent on me," Madelyn said with a smile, looking directly at Roger.

Roger was stunned. "You have five million? Where did you get that kind of money?"

"Wait here."

Madelyn had thought severing ties with the Clark family would be a complicated ordeal. She hadn't expected Roger to agree so readily, which put her in an unexpectedly good mood.

She turned and walked to the dim storage room at the end of the first floor.

That was where she had been made to stay when she first returned to the Clark family.

It didn't take her long to retrieve a small notebook from beneath the floor tiles. She opened it and placed it in front of Roger.

"The day I returned to the Clark family, you threw a celebration banquet. The total cost of the meal was 3, 700 yuan. Divided among everyone, the amount spent on me was 529 yuan."

She had barely finished reading the first line when the expressions of everyone in the room changed-shock, disbelief, and even a hint of fear.

Madelyn had been keeping a detailed record of every expense since the day she returned to the Clark family?

She had kept meticulous records of everything-every meal she ate, the cost of ingredients, the gas bill, the chef's salary, even the water and electricity she used!

"Later, I went to university. Since my grades were excellent, I was exempt from tuition fees. But as for living expenses, you only gave me money for the first month and then forgot about it entirely."

Madelyn read through the entries one by one.

When she reached the final page of the notebook, she pointed to the total at the bottom.

"In all the years I've been with the Clark family, you've spent a total of 49, 822.53 yuan on me. Let's round it up to 50, 000. I'll pay you that, and we'll be done for good."
