Chapter 3 Divorce

Sonya's POV

*****

After three weeks of being in the hospital, I was finally released and deemed stable enough to leave on my own.

Nobody had come to visit me, but I didn't mind anyway.

Okay, who was I kidding? It hurt me to my bones that no one had cared enough to check in on me or at least, call.

The only people who had called were my parents but I had told them I was fine and didn't disclose any more details, fearing that I would disappoint them.

Anyway, as I stepped out of the hospital building, I hired an Uber to take me back to Callum's house.

On the drive there, I sat silently, staring out of the window as an overwhelming sense of sadness and emptiness encroached on me like an ocean rising and covering a small island.

Tears stung the back of my eyes and eventually began falling freely, my breathing becoming hitched as my hands went to my stomach.

My baby is gone. My marriage with Callum is uncertain and the rational thing to do now would be to leave him.

But... But I can't.

"Oh, Callum..." I whispered to myself, sniffling as a bitter smile curled up my lips. "I should have noticed the signs. You've ruined me..."

My heart felt like it was about to give in again and I even spotted the Uber driver trying to peek at me through the rearview mirror a few times.

But I quickly used the back of my hands to wipe my tears away, looking away from him and sighing to myself, closing my eyes and reminiscing on different thoughts to distract myself from the numbing emptiness.

Finally, the driver dropped me in front of the house, and I paid before walking toward it, each step heavy as I remembered how I had rushed out of there on that fateful day.

I had been so excited to go see him on his birthday... Not realizing that my world would come crashing down that day.

When I got to the front door, I drew in a deep breath before I brought my hand to the doorknob and pushed it open.

However, to my surprise, the door was locked from the inside, causing my eyebrows to furrow and my heart to jump into my throat.

Was Callum back?

I scanned my gaze around the compound just then and spotted one of his many cars parked there. I hadn't noticed it on time.

Suddenly, the door swung open, forcing me to swerve my head to face whoever opened the door.

To my surprise, it was none other than Amanda who had a frown on her face and held a baby close to her body. The baby seemed to be a year old and suckled on its fingers while Amanda eyed me with contempt.

"Look what the cat dragged in." She remarked, her gaze going from my head to my toes. "What do you think you're doing here?"

My jaw clenched as I felt anger simmering deep inside me.

"This is my house, Amanda. I should be asking you that question." I blurted simply, holding myself back from doing anything rash. "Please, excuse me–"

I attempted to step in but before I could, a hot slap landed on my face, causing me to stumble backward from the force. My hands went to my face with shock; my mouth parted wide as I raised my head and stared at Amanda, who had slapped me.

"You pathetic bitch!" She spat with spite, placing the baby on the floor so she could face me properly. "Who do you think you are, huh? This is Callum's house and he doesn't want you anymore."

My eyes fluttered repeatedly, my jaw still clenched as I glared at Amanda.

However, before either of us could do or say anything more, a male voice boomed from inside the house.

"Amanda, who's that?!"

My heart skipped a beat when I heard that voice, my neck stretching to see him.

The door finally opened fully, and Callum stepped out, folding his arms in front of his chest and staring at me at first like he had seen a ghost.

However, he eventually sniggered, shaking his head as he eyed me with contempt.

"So you survived. Congrats on that." He remarked nonchalantly, causing my heart to clench like it was being gripped by a vise.

I gritted my teeth, swallowing hard as I attempted to speak but before I could let any words out, Callum continued speaking.

"If it's not clear to you now, I don't want you in my life anymore." He said plainly, his voice devoid of warmth or pity as he wrapped his right arm around Amanda's waist.

He glanced at her with loving eyes, the same look that I've always craved him to give me throughout all the years of our marriage.

Anyway, after that, he continued. "That baby you see close to her is my child. My heir. And so is the baby growing inside her right now."

I couldn't believe my ears, my eyes widening as I brought my gaze to the baby standing on the ground while clutching Amanda's hand.

It was then that I also noticed the slight baby bump on Amanda's stomach that I hadn't noticed before.

"T– That baby is over a year old, at least," I mumbled, shaking my head with disbelief. "So, you've... You've been cheating on me for this long? We've been married for three years and I've been trying my best to find a way to get pregnant while you've been–"

"It's not my fault that you're nothing more than a barren blow doll." Callum spat, scoffing with disdain before he shook his head, not caring in the slightest how hurtful his words were.

At this point, I didn't think there was anything he could do or say that could hurt me beyond what he had already done. Or, so I thought...

Suddenly, Callum shoved his hand into his back pocket and brought out a small envelope before flinging it at me.

I caught the envelope, staring at it with confusion as I opened it and brought out some papers inside it.

"I have no use for you anymore, Sonya." Callum kept on talking, his voice cold. "Sign those papers and make sure you bring them to me in a week. Have a good life."

Without saying anything else, he, Amanda, and the child stepped into the house and closed the door behind themselves, leaving me out there like a beggar.

I sighed with despair as my eyes skimmed through the papers, and my hands trembled when I began realizing what they were.
