Chapter 7 Chaos at Sophia's house

As they cuddled and whispered into each other, their voices soft and low, Jake tried to lift Sophia in his arms. But she winced, a sharp pain shooting through her arm.

Let me see," he said gently.

Sophia hesitated, pulling her arm slightly away. "It's nothing," she murmured.

But Jake insisted, his voice firmer this time. "Please, Sophia."

Reluctantly, she let him take her arm. His eyes widened as he saw the darkening bruise wrapping around it. "Soph, what happened?" he asked, his voice soft.

Jake's brows furrowed as he studied the bruise. "This doesn't look like a burn," he said slowly.

Sophia pulled her arm back gently. "It was the fry pan," she said, avoiding his eyes. "I bumped into it while cooking."

Jake didn't look convinced. "Sophia, This is not blister-it's deep, we need to get this checked out."

"I'm fine," she said quickly. "I already took something for the pain, and I've got cream on it. It'll go down."

He paused, searching her face. "Are you sure that's all it is?"

She forced a smile. "Yeah. Just clumsy me again."

Come here," he said softly, his voice low but steady.

Sophia hesitated, her guard flickering for just a second.

"Please," he added, holding out his hand.

Slowly, like she wasn't sure she should, she let him pull her closer. He guided her gently onto his lap, cradling her with one arm around her waist, the other brushing the hair away from her face. Her body tensed at first, but then slowly relaxed into his.

"You don't have to act like everything's fine," he whispered, pressing his forehead to hers. "Not with me."

Her breath caught, just for a second. The weight of his words hung heavy between them.

"I just don't want to make it a big deal," she said quietly. "It's easier that way."

He exhaled, holding her closer, his fingers lightly tracing the edge of the bruise. "It's only easier if you're not hurting. But you are."

Sophia looked away, blinking rapidly. "I'm used to it."

Jake's jaw tightened. He wanted to ask what that meant, what she was really hiding-but the tremble in her voice told him enough for now.

"You don't have to be," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "Not anymore."

Just as the silence between them started to feel safe, there was a sudden, sharp knock at the door.

Sophia froze. Her whole body went rigid in his lap. "Don't answer it," she whispered, her voice barely audible.

But he was already rising, gently setting her aside as he stood. The knock came again-louder this time, more urgent.

Jake narrowed his eyes. "Who's there?"

A voice came from the other side-cool, annoyed, and unmistakably male. "It's Alex. Sophia, open the damn door. We need to talk."

Jake's head snapped toward her. "Alex?" he repeated, stunned.

Sophia stood slowly, guilt washing over her like a crashing wave. "Jake... I was going to tell you. I just-"

"You were going to tell me?" Jake's voice rose, disbelief in every word. "When? After cuddling up in my arms and telling me everything's fine?"

"Let me in, Sophia!" Alex pounded on the door now.

Alex stepped in, jaw clenched, eyes immediately locking on Sophia. "Why didn't you answer my calls?"

"I told you I needed space!" she shouted, her voice cracking. "I didn't want you to come here!"

Jake stepped between them, his chest heaving. "You're her boyfriend?"

Alex's gaze flicked to him with a sneer. "Yeah. And who the hell are you?"

Jake laughed bitterly. "Apparently, the other guy. Or maybe just the fool."

Sophia stood there, caught between them, her voice trembling. "I didn't plan this. I didn't mean for any of it to happen like this..."

"Why this time?" Jake asked , his voice lower now, wounded. "All that time, -we talked about trust."

Alex turned on her. "So this is what space means? Hiding out with him?"

"I didn't hide! I was trying to breathe-I needed-" she stopped, tears threatening to spill.

The room was charged, raw with anger and betrayal, three hearts beating way too fast, none of them ready for what just got ripped open.

Sophia's eyes darted between the two men, the weight of the situation crashing down on her all at once. Her chest tightened. She couldn't breathe.

Jake, his jaw tight and his fists clenched at his sides, took a step back. His heart was pounding in his ears, but he couldn't seem to stop himself from moving. He searched for his keys. The ones that had always felt so natural in his hand. Now, they felt like a weight, a reminder of how everything had just crumbled.

Sophia opened her mouth, but no words came out. Her hand reached for him, trembling. "Jake, wait-please-"

He didn't look at her. His eyes were fixed on the door, then down at his shoes as he adjusted his shirt.

"You're really leaving?" Alex's voice was harsh, but there was something broken behind it. He had no right to be angry, not anymore.

Jake didn't look up. His fingers tightened around the keys, the cold metal biting into his palm. "What's left to stay for?" he muttered under his breath.

Sophia's throat tightened, her breath coming in ragged gasps as she stepped toward him. "Jake, please, just... just listen to me."

"I should've heard what wasn't being said. You didn't trust me enough to tell me the truth."

A slow tear slid down her cheek as she reached for him. "It wasn't about trust. I swear it wasn't."

He finally met her eyes, and for the first time, she saw the raw hurt in his-something she'd never wanted to be the cause of.

Alex was standing near the door now, his arms crossed, watching the two of them like a bystander to a wreck. "This isn't helping anything," he said, but his tone was too cold, too detached. "Maybe it's time we all just face it."

Jake didn't wait for anything else. With a sharp exhale, he walked to the door. "Goodbye." He muttered slowly as he made his way to the car.
