I looked over and noticed a woman seated next to the bed. She was elderly, her dark hair streaked with silver, her eyes compassionate. She put a cool hand on my forehead and smiled softly.
She remarked, "You've been through a lot." Now take a rest. You're safe.
"Where am I, exactly?" My voice was hoarse as I asked.
She answered, "You are in the Silver Moon Pack." "My name is Reika. In the forest, I discovered you. I brought you here because you weren't conscious.
The Silver Moon Pack? They were unknown to me. But now I didn't give a damn. All I could do was be thankful for my life. With tears in my eyes, I muttered, "Thank you."
Reika gave me a hand pat. "Lila, you're welcome here. We'll look after you and your child.
A beat skipped in my chest. "Are you aware of the baby?"
She gave a nod. "I am the healer of the pack. As soon as I found you, I sensed it. Aren't you roughly four months along?
My hand automatically went to my stomach as I nodded. I could feel the life expanding inside of me, even if it was still flat. My darling. Kian's child.
My chest ached at the memory of Kian. He had turned away both our child and me. And suddenly I found myself here, in an unfamiliar pack, unsure of what lay ahead.
Reika and the rest of the Silver Moon Pack looked after me throughout the course of the following few days. They provided me with clothing, food, and a secure sleeping area. I was thankful that they didn't ask a lot of questions. I wasn't prepared to discuss what had transpired with Cyrus or Kian.
However, I couldn't get rid of the uneasy feeling.
There were barely twenty or so members in the pack. Despite their kindness, there seemed to be tension between them, as if they were concealing something. Then there was a man named Cyrus, who was their Alpha.
Cyrus had dark hair and sharp green eyes, and he was tall and broad-shouldered. Although he was courteous, there was something icy about him that made my skin crawl.
One evening while we were sitting by the fire, he said, "Lila." We appreciate you being here. But you have to realize that there are rules in our pack. You will have to follow them if you wish to stay.
My gut twisted as I nodded. "What sort of regulations?"
"No outsiders," he stated firmly. There is no interaction with other packs. And no secrets.
I took a deep breath. "I get it."
However, as I saw his eyes, I realized I couldn't rely on him. Cyrus had a menacing quality about him that made me want to flee.
A week later, I heard footsteps behind me as I sat by the river to wash my clothing. I turned to see a young woman with beautiful blue eyes and curling red hair. Grinning, she took a seat next to me.
"Hello," she said. "My name is Sophie. My mother is Reika.
I returned the smile. "Sophie, nice to meet you."
We chatted for a while, and for the first time in weeks, I felt at ease. The rules of the pack didn't seem to matter to Sophie, who was witty and compassionate.
After some time, she said, "So." "Lila, tell me your story. What brought you here?
Uncertain of how much to tell her, I paused. However, there was something about Sophie that gave me a sense of security and trust.
"It's a lengthy tale," I finally uttered. However, the abbreviated version is I was fleeing from someone. Someone who poses a threat.
Sophie's eyes got bigger. "Who?"
I gave a headshake. "I am unable to say. Not quite yet.
With a solemn gaze, she nodded. "I understand. But Lila, you're secure here. We'll keep you safe.
Despite my wanting to believe her, I couldn't get rid of the uneasy feeling that danger was still lurking around the corner.
I had a dream that night.
I had returned to the wilderness, fleeing from Kael and Cyrus. Kian was also present, calling my name with remorse in his eyes. But despite my best efforts, I was unable to get away.
My heart was racing as I woke up. I could hear noises outside, but the room was dark. I slipped over to the window and took a quick look.
Cyrus was speaking to someone I couldn't see while standing in the darkness.
"She's here," he replied quietly. However, she is still in the dark. Continue to observe her. We cannot afford to make any errors.
My blood froze. To whom was he speaking? What were they hoping to get out of me?
I made the decision to speak with Cyrus the following morning. I had to stop worrying about who I could trust and living in constant terror.
He was sitting at a desk piled high with paperwork and maps when I found him in his cabin. As I walked in, he looked up, his face unreadable.
"Lila," he said. "How may I help you?"
In an attempt to calm myself, I inhaled deeply. "Cyrus, I must know the truth. You actually brought me here, but why?
His eyes narrowed as he reclined in his chair. "What are you trying to say?"
I trembled when I said, "I heard you last night." "You were referring to me, about observing me. What is happening?
He remained silent for a while. Then he let out a sigh and got up, moving around the desk to face me.
"Lila, you're right," he said. "I have a purpose for bringing you here. However, it's not what you believe.
"So what is it?" I insisted.
After a moment of hesitation, he said, "Your baby, Lila." It's unique. More unique than you think.
A beat skipped in my chest. "What do you mean?"
He remarked, "Your child has a rare bloodline." "A lineage that has the power to transform our pack." For every werewolf.
My thoughts were racing as I gazed at him. "What are you saying?"
His eyes were shining as he took a step closer. "Your baby holds the key to something far greater than either you or me, and I will do everything in my power to keep it safe."
A shiver went down my back. "Use it or protect it?"
Cyrus remained silent. He merely grinned, and I knew then that I needed to leave.
I gathered my belongings and sneaked out of the cabin that evening. I followed the secret trail Sophie had told me led out of the pack's domain, my pulse racing with each step.
However, I heard footsteps following me as I got to the forest's edge. Cyrus was standing there with his eyes gleaming in the darkness when I turned, my breath seizing in my throat.
"Are you going somewhere, Lila?" he said icily.
I didn't respond. I simply ran.
I heard a howl in the distance while I was running through the woodland. With my heart racing, I turned to see a pack of wolves coming out of the trees. Cyrus is at the front, staring at me. "Lila, you can't run forever," he growls.
