Chapter 4 You must eat healthily

Introducing Edward Ryan our Hero.

Edward's POV

Doc, you are urgently needed at the intensive care unit. Max replied, gasping heavily, "The accident patient is unable to breathe, and the interns couldn't handle it." Most likely as a result of sprinting to get here from the opposite end.

"Okay," I answered as I hurried to the patient's aid. The nurses in my emergency room are Eva, Max, and Ana.

After fifteen minutes...

I checked the vitals one more before leaving the room with my interns Sandra and James.

"Are you unable to manage this basic emergency? I'm not sure what you people discovered. Steve and Amelia, where are you?

She mumbled, glancing down, "They are....attending an operation... headed...by Doctor Linda." I could tell she was frightened to look at me. When people are scared of me, I feel like a monster. Although I don't get upset often, there are some things at work that I simply cannot stand since they are life-or-death situations.

I went to have coffee after saying, "Look, I need you both to revise the notes that I gave you and you need to brief it tomorrow."

Since I have nothing to do this morning, I need a quick break. The coffee from Maria's café, which is next to the hospital, has always been my favorite. "Looks like someone is going to Maria's without me," I said as I descended the stairs as a voice approached me from behind.

I had no idea you were this free. John, get to work instead of being available all the time. "Come on, man. You won't even give me a chance to be made fun of. Do you? Alright, what is my sweetie up to?

I said, "Linda is in the operating room," and we proceeded to the store.

My closest friends are John and Linda. We got to know each other in medical school. John ultimately decided on pediatrics, even though we were in the same class and had the same intern. Linda and I visited the emergency room. They were married a few years ago after falling in love as early as our third year of medical school. They currently have a lovely three-year-old angel named Sofia. I'm fortunate to be a part of John's wonderful family.

Maria greeted us with excitement as soon as we walked into the store, saying, "Good noon, my dears. I was just thinking of you when I made today's special chocolate waffles."

Maria, who has been running this store for years, is in her 60s. She is well-known in this community, and as numerous new structures were built, they attempted to seize her land as well. However, she was adamant about keeping her store open, and she still does. We three are frequent customers of hers, and she has always treated us as her grandchildren rather than as a single family.

"Good afternoon, Maria. Wow, we are very excited to eat the waffles. John gave her a hug and sat in the chair in the corner, saying, "I'll have it with Expresso." It's where we usually go.

"Good afternoon, Maria. How is your knee pain, by the way? I'll have my usual cup of coffee. Is it better now? I sat across from John and asked.

"It's better now, Ryan. The medication is working incredibly well. She chuckled and went to grab our orders, saying, "See, I can walk like a teenager." "John, you need to pay Sofia's nursery fee today and pick her up early," I replied, turning to face him. "Shit, I completely forgot about the fees." Then I'll depart early. As the waitress took our orders, Ryan remarked, "You know you can't refuse when Linda told me to call you for dinner tonight."

"Yah, I know that I can't refuse but am wondering what would be her plan this time as you know she would not do anything special without a motive behind" I replied while drinking my coffee. My fatigue is immediately relieved by the coffee. No matter how exhausted we are, all it takes to get our vitality back is a cup of coffee.

"You will know when you come," he said with a laugh. The fast was over. "Maria, thanks for the wonderful coffee We need to go, and don't forget to continue the medicine for the next two days."

"I'll carry on, Ryan. She added, "Bye, John, and come with Linda next time." Then we left the store and returned to the bustling streets and daily life.

I had to see two more emergency cases after that, and I called the interns to my room later that evening to wrap up the day.

I was about to finish writing down the cases I saw today as part of my routine when I heard my interns banging on the door.

Steve came up and handed over the reports after saying, "Come in." "Doctor, we have written the reports of the cases we saw today."

Tomorrow, I'll review it and provide my thoughts. I want everyone to keep in mind that every second counts when caring for a patient in the emergency room. I've handed you the notes and the topics. Review it, and tomorrow morning, I need you to brief me individually. I firmly answered, "Yes, and thank you, doctor." The four of them said, "Come early one hour so that we can finish the theory and move on to see the patients," and they all left together.

I unwind in my chair. It was a long day today. Since the morning, I have been seeing patients nonstop. It was 8.30 p.m. when I checked the clock, and I had to get to John's place. Taking my car keys off the table, I made my way to the parking lot. I started driving home after unlocking my car. Amid all the hubbub, working in the emergency room is demanding and calls for patience and focus. The hospital's emergency room is constantly crowded, noisy, and active. We must always remain vigilant since emergencies will arise regularly. Despite all of this, I enjoy my work. Since I was a young child, I have always wished to become a doctor.

When my phone began to buzz, I knew it was from my mother without even seeing the caller ID. At this time, she called me every day.

"Hello, Mom," I said feebly, exhausted.

"What happened, Edward? Your voice conveys your weariness and weakness. Have you had any food today? "Mom... just tell me the truth," she begged worriedly. I was too busy to eat lunch. I'm going to John's for supper after having toast and milk in the morning. They invited me, and all I'm feeling is fatigue.

Look, Son, you must eat healthily. You're not paying attention to what I've told you repeatedly. I'm concerned about your health, you know.

"I'm trying, I'm sorry, Mama. I said, "Okay, I'll eat from now on." My family is my entire world. I greatly admire my parents, who have been a successful married pair for many years.
