Chapter 5 I'm not walking away

The morning after Theodore's visit, Valeria found herself caught in the tangled threads of her emotions. The room felt smaller than it ever had before, as if the walls were closing in on her. She could still hear his words echoing in her mind-words that both terrified and excited her. Time was running out. The moment to decide was fast approaching, and she had no idea what direction her life was heading.

She stood before the mirror, staring at her reflection. The woman who looked back at her was no longer the same young, naïve girl who had once married for security, for the promise of a future that was nothing more than a gilded cage. The woman before her was scarred, but strong. Her eyes, once wide with innocence, now held a hard edge of defiance and a quiet strength. She had come so far, and she couldn't just throw it all away-could she?

The door creaked open behind her, and Valeria turned to see the familiar face of Marian, the tavern keeper who had become something of a surrogate mother to her. Marian had been the one to offer her a place when she'd fled her past, and she had been there for every sleepless night and every difficult decision.

"I made breakfast," Marian said, her tone light, but there was a subtle concern in her voice. "You didn't eat last night."

Valeria smiled weakly, trying to brush off the knot of tension that had settled in her chest. "I'm not hungry."

"You should eat," Marian insisted, her gaze softening as she crossed the room and placed a steaming plate of eggs and bread on the small table. "You're still thinking about what Theodore said, aren't you?"

Valeria sighed, her fingers brushing over the delicate lacework of the tablecloth. She didn't need to say anything-Marian knew her too well.

"I can't stop thinking about it," Valeria confessed, finally meeting Marian's eyes. "I don't know what to do, Marian. I don't know if I can go back to that life-back to the Lancaster family and all that power and manipulation."

Marian sat across from her, folding her hands on the table, her gaze steady. "What do you want, Valeria? What do you really want?"

It was the question Valeria had been asking herself for weeks now. She had spent so long running from her past, hiding from the woman she had been, that she hadn't taken the time to consider what she truly wanted.

"I want..." Valeria hesitated, her breath catching in her throat. "I want freedom. But I don't know if I can ever have that. I don't know if it's even possible."

"You're stronger than you think," Marian said, her voice gentle but firm. "You've already survived so much. You've built something for yourself here, a life that's your own. Why give it up?"

"I can't keep hiding forever," Valeria replied, her voice trembling with frustration. "The Lancaster family-they won't let me go. They'll come for me eventually, and I'll have no choice but to face them."

Marian reached across the table, placing her hand over Valeria's. "Then don't run from them. Face them on your own terms. You're not the same woman you were when you left. You're stronger now. And you don't have to do it alone."

Valeria looked up, meeting Marian's eyes. There was no pity in those eyes-only support, and a quiet belief in her strength. "What if I can't do it? What if I fail?"

"Then you fail," Marian said simply. "But you try. You always try. And you do it for yourself. Not for anyone else."

Valeria took a deep breath, feeling the weight of the words settle in her chest. This was what she had been avoiding, wasn't it? She had been running, afraid to face her past, afraid to confront the things that had shaped her. But what if Marian was right? What if she had the strength to face it, to take control of her future?

"I don't know if I can go back to that life," she whispered, her voice breaking. "But I can't keep running either."

Marian gave her a soft smile. "Then don't run. Walk forward."

Valeria spent the next few days in a haze, caught between the pull of the past and the allure of the future. She had come so far, and yet, every step forward seemed to bring her closer to the people she had left behind-the very people she had spent years trying to escape. She couldn't shake the feeling that something was about to happen.

And then, one evening, as she was closing up the tavern, a knock came at the door. She opened it to find Theodore standing on the other side, his expression unreadable.

"Are you ready?" he asked, his voice low.

Valeria didn't answer right away. Her heart was racing in her chest, and every instinct told her to run, to close the door and retreat into the safety of her small, quiet life. But she knew that wouldn't solve anything. The choices she had made up until this point had all been reactions to fear-fear of the future, fear of the past.

"I'm ready," she said, her voice steady, though her heart was in her throat.

Theodore nodded, his gaze softening just slightly. "Then let's go."

As they walked together into the night, Valeria couldn't help but feel a sense of dread mixed with something else-something she hadn't felt in a long time: hope. She was stepping into the unknown, and there was no going back. But for the first time in her life, she was making the choice herself. And maybe, just maybe, that would be enough.

The journey was long, and as they traveled, Theodore remained mostly silent, giving Valeria space to think. The roads were dark and winding, and with each mile, the tension in her chest grew heavier. She was heading toward the life she had once known, the life that had nearly destroyed her. But this time, she was in control. She was no longer the naïve woman who had been manipulated by her family's power. She was a different person-stronger, wiser, and determined to take back what was hers.

When they finally reached the Lancaster estate, Valeria's heart sank. The grand gates loomed before them, a symbol of everything she had tried to escape. But she didn't turn away. She stepped forward, her steps steady, her resolve unwavering.

Theodore gave her a glance before pushing open the gates, allowing them to pass into the world she had once been a part of.

"You know what you're walking into," he said quietly.

Valeria nodded. "Yes. And this time, I'm not walking away."
