Chapter 3 Dinner Date

The Italian restaurant was cozy, with dim lighting and the aroma of freshly baked bread. Emily arrived a few minutes early, and Ryan was already seated at a table by the window. He stood up as she approached, his eyes crinkling at the corners as he smiled. "You look great," he said, pulling out her chair. Emily felt a flutter in her chest. "Thanks, you don't look so bad yourself." They ordered their food and spent the next hour laughing and chatting about everything from campus gossip to their favorite TV shows. The conversation flowed effortlessly, like it always did.

As they sipped their coffee and waited for dessert, Ryan turned serious. "Hey, Em, can I ask you something?" "Sure, what's up?" Emily replied, her curiosity piqued. "Do you ever think about after graduation?" Ryan asked, his eyes locked on hers. "I mean, we're going to be apart soon. Different cities, different jobs...do you think our friendship will change?" Emily's heart skipped a beat. She'd been thinking about this a lot lately, but hadn't realized Ryan had too. "I hope not," she said softly. "We've been through so much together. I don't see why distance would change things." Ryan nodded, his expression thoughtful. "You're right. We'll make it work." As they finished their dessert and prepared to leave, Emily felt a sense of melancholy wash over her. She didn't want this night to end, didn't want to leave Ryan's side.
