It was raining the morning we made the drive to the mountains.

Not a storm just a steady hush, like the sky was remembering something.

Damian had his hand on my knee the whole way.

Arielle sat in the backseat, humming to herself, her head against the window as the trees passed by.

We weren't escaping anything.
