Chapter 5 A Bond in the Night

The night stretched endlessly, the air thick with tension as Azriel followed the mysterious presence into the woods. Every step was deliberate, his senses heightened. The whispering winds carried the faint rustle of movement, but he couldn't tell whether it was the intruder or the forest itself breathing around him.

Lucan moved beside him, his stance rigid, muscles taut. "This isn't normal," Lucan murmured, voice barely above a whisper. "You felt it too, didn't you? That shift in the air."

Azriel gave a small nod, his golden eyes scanning the darkness ahead. "It's watching us," he replied. "And it's not just the usual threat. This feels... personal."

Lucan exhaled sharply but said nothing. They both knew that whatever haunted these woods wasn't just a rogue or a lost soul-it was something darker, something ancient.

As they moved deeper into the trees, Azriel's mind drifted back to the festival. The way the flames had flickered, as though startled by something unseen. The chilling voice that had slithered into his mind, taunting him with its promises of darkness. And then, there was Valesia.

She had looked at him that night, really looked at him-not with admiration, not with fear, but with something far more dangerous: recognition.

A snap of a branch brought Azriel back to the present. His body moved on instinct, muscles coiling as he turned toward the sound. Lucan did the same, both of them poised for a fight.

A figure stepped into the faint moonlight filtering through the trees.

Valesia.

Azriel exhaled slowly, his heart pounding with something far more unpredictable than fear. She stood tall, her silver-blonde hair shimmering like a ghostly halo, her sharp eyes unreadable.

"You shouldn't be here," Azriel said, voice low.

"Neither should you," she countered.

Lucan glanced between them, his lips pressing into a thin line. "I'll give you two a moment," he muttered, stepping away.

Azriel sighed. "You followed us."

Valesia tilted her head slightly. "No. I was already here."

That set Azriel on edge. "Why?"

She hesitated, something flickering in her gaze-doubt, hesitation, or maybe something deeper. "I was searching for answers," she admitted. "Just like you."

Azriel crossed his arms. "About what?"

Valesia's expression darkened. "The voice."

A beat of silence passed between them. The weight of her words settled deep in Azriel's chest. She had heard it too.

"How long?" he asked.

"Since I was a child," she admitted.

His pulse quickened. "And you've never told anyone?"

Her lips pressed into a thin line. "Would they have believed me?"

Azriel couldn't argue with that. He barely believed himself most days.

A gust of wind rushed through the trees, carrying a distant whisper. A language neither of them understood, but both instinctively feared.

Azriel took a cautious step forward. "Valesia, what else do you know?"

She hesitated again, as though debating how much to reveal. Then, finally, she met his gaze and said, "The voice isn't just calling you, Azriel. It's calling us both."

And with those words, everything changed.
