Chapter 4 The Bond That Binds

Morning came slowly, the sky painted in soft hues of gray and gold. But to Azriel, the warmth of the rising sun did little to chase away the cold that had settled in his bones.

He sat at the edge of the training grounds, sharpening a dagger he had no real need for. His movements were slow, deliberate-an excuse to keep his hands busy, his mind occupied.

But it didn't work.

The memory of the dream still clung to him, coiling around his thoughts like a serpent.

"Not yet."

The words haunted him.

How much longer could he fight this? How much longer until the thing inside him won?

His grip on the blade tightened. He had to find a way to stop it.

He had to.

"Azriel."

He stiffened. That voice. Her voice.

Slowly, he turned.

Valencia stood a few feet away, her arms crossed over her chest. Her silver-blue eyes, sharp and unreadable, locked onto his.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke. The air between them was thick with unspoken words, questions neither was willing to ask.

Azriel was the first to break the silence. "You ran last night."

Valencia lifted a brow. "So did you."

He exhaled slowly, setting the dagger down. "That's not the same."

"Isn't it?" she challenged.

Azriel clenched his jaw. She was doing this on purpose-pushing, testing him. And the worst part? She wasn't wrong.

He had run. Not in the way she had, but in his own way. He had let fear hold him back, let it keep him from going after her.

Valencia stepped closer. "Why didn't you come after me?"

The question hit harder than it should have.

Azriel met her gaze, his voice low. "Would you have wanted me to?"

She hesitated. Just for a second. But it was enough.

"Valencia," he said, softer this time. "You're afraid of what this bond means. I can feel it."

Her lips parted slightly, as if she wanted to argue, but no words came.

She was afraid. And he understood why.

This bond-their bond-wasn't ordinary. It wasn't the kind of fated connection that wolves dreamed of. It was heavy, complicated, tangled in shadows neither of them fully understood.

And yet... it was there. Undeniable. Unbreakable.

Valencia swallowed hard. "This isn't how it's supposed to be."

Azriel's chest tightened. "I know."

For a moment, the weight of their reality settled between them. Two souls bound by fate, yet standing at the edge of something neither could control.

Then, Valencia exhaled and shook her head. "I can't do this right now."

Azriel didn't stop her as she turned and walked away. He only watched, his wolf pacing restlessly inside him.

Because no matter how far she went, no matter how much she tried to fight it...

She would always feel it.

The bond.

And so would he.

The Gathering

That night, the Moonveil Pack gathered under the full moon. The bonfires burned bright, casting flickering shadows over the wolves as they stood in silence, waiting.

Azriel stood at the front, his expression unreadable as he surveyed his people. He knew why they had gathered. They wanted answers.

They wanted to know why their Alpha had faltered.

Lucan stepped forward, his stance firm. "Azriel."

Azriel met his Beta's gaze. "Speak."

Lucan hesitated, then glanced at the pack before returning his attention to him. "The elders... they believe the curse is getting worse."

A muscle in Azriel's jaw twitched. "Do they?"

Lucan nodded. "And they think you need to do something about it before it's too late."

A murmur spread through the pack.

Azriel felt it-the weight of their fear, their uncertainty.

If his own wolves started to question him, to doubt his ability to lead...

It could destroy everything.

He took a slow breath before speaking. "You're all afraid," he said, his voice steady. "I can feel it. But let me be clear-this curse does not control me."

A hush fell over the crowd.

Azriel stepped forward, his gaze sweeping over them. "I am your Alpha. I have fought for this pack, bled for this pack. And I will not fall to something as insignificant as fear."

Lucan's expression darkened. "This isn't just about fear, Azriel. It's about trust."

Azriel's muscles tensed.

Trust.

The one thing that could either hold this pack together... or shatter it completely.

He clenched his fists. He would not let that happen.

Not now.

Not ever.
