Chapter 1 Five millions Dollar cheque

Chapter 1

Sunshine Carter POV

"That is a cheque of five million dollars. Take the money and sign the divorce papers, Sunshine," Rayne looked into my eyes and uttered with so much disgust and hatred written all over him. This was the worst and the craziest birthday gift I ever got in my twenty-three years of existence. Seeing the hatred in Rayne's eyes as they pierced into mine like he had grudges of years against me, I forgot to feel the pain in my heart.

"Ra... Rayne..." My voice quivered and I finally felt a sharp pain in my heart that left it clenching tightly.

"I can't be with a barren, Sunshine. We got married because I wanted you to bear me children," I thought he felt something for me in the eight months of our marriage, but just like eight months ago that he made it clear to me that I was going to be his surrogate baby mama and nothing more, nothing had changed.

"I don't want to find you here when I get back," Rayne said to me with so much hatred in his eyes as if I was a piece of shit. He left the room without sparing me another glance.

I managed to sit on the bed as my tears finally found their way down my cheeks, and I whimpered like a baby. I didn't have any right to get hurt because this was never meant to be a real marriage, we had an agreement, and he paid me for this, but how could I have stopped myself from loving someone as perfect as Rayne? He was the definition of perfection. His cuteness, elegance, his charm, and his perfect career as a medical doctor was all I needed to fall head over heels for this man.

My hand trembled as I pulled out the nightstand drawer, and lying there neatly was the brown file that I had kept there earlier. My heart broke into a million shreds as I picked up the file and brought out the white paper that was inside. When I got the news of my pregnancy yesterday, I was the happiest woman on earth. I was glad that my prayer had finally been answered and it felt like the best birthday gift I could ever ask for, but I didn't know what to feel right now.

'Just call him and give him the test result. He would allow you to stay' You would advise me, but is it really worth it? To him, I was only going to be a children-producing machine, he would throw me out in the future after he got the number of kids he wanted from me, and by then I might never set my eyes on my kids again. I couldn't risk that. I couldn't let go of everything just like that.

With a heavy heart, I picked up the pen and signed the divorce paper. Although it was late in the night, but no way I was going to stay for another night under the same roof as Rayne, at least not after he threatened me earlier. I packed up my belongings and left his house.

Maybe my life wouldn't have turned out this miserably if I had a family to call my own. I was said to have lost my mom during childbirth, and raised by my single Dad whom I barely recognized because he died when I was just six years old. Grew up in the orphanage after, and moved out to live on my own when I turned eighteen. All I ever wanted was to go to school like every other normal kid and become a model, but where the heck is the money to sponsor myself? I was only able to raise some money for college but unfortunately, I couldn't go any further, so I dropped out in the second year. I could barely feed myself, so where was I supposed to get the money to see myself through school? My whole life was a mess.

I lodged at a hotel to cool off my head for some time and think of what next to do with my life and my unborn baby.

As I sat on the bed with my clothes littering the bed and the floor, a small box caught my attention and I reached for it. I carefully opened the metal box which made a creaking sound before it revealed the old wristwatch that was lying neatly inside. The wristwatch belonged to my Dad. They had found it on the site where he died seventeen years ago and was given to me. Why would I keep a damaged wristwatch? You would ask me, but then it was the only thing I had that belonged to my Dad which I could hold on to along with the little memories of us together.

I held on tightly to the wristwatch, unable to hold back my tears as I let them fall freely down my cheeks. I heard the wristwatch make a clicking sound, but that was the least of my concerns, so I ignored it.

I cried my eyes out until there were almost no tears left in my eyes to shed and when I felt sleepy, I didn't try to fight it.

I had no idea how long I'd been asleep but the day was bright when I forced my eyes open and I realized that it was already morning.

I stupidly picked up my phone and unlocked it as soon as I sat up on the bed, hoping to meet a missed call from Rayne or even at least a text from him asking if I was fine, but that was in my wildest dream. I reminded myself that he didn't have a reason to reach out to me as he was already done with me, I dropped my phone disappointedly.

I buried my face between my palms, trying to think of something. Maybe what next I could do at this point in my life, but I couldn't think of anything. My head was so blank, so I gave up.

Just when I was about to leave the bed, a faint knock sounded from outside.

"Who is there?" I asked as I tiredly left the bed.

"It's the room attendant," I advanced toward the door and pulled it open after I heard a feminine voice and a slim lady in her thirties welcomed me with a warm smile on her face.

"Good morning, Ms. You have a guest," I knitted my eyebrows confusingly when she said that, wondering who it might be. Could it be that it was Rayne who had come to get me? The thought of that alone made my heart lit up with excitement.

"Where is he?" As if I was already sure of who was said to be here to see me, I asked her excitedly.

"They are in the lobby," She replied to me, and I looked at her confusingly, pondering on the 'they'. Did Rayne regret his actions and came with someone to plead with me? That was one of the rarest things that could ever happen even in my dream, but still, I couldn't help it.

"I will be there shortly," I scurried back into the room and quickly checked myself out in the mirror. I changed my clothes even though I wasn't sure yet if he was really the one, and when I was done with everything, I finally left for the lobby. However, I was disappointed not to find Rayne around and was at the same time confused at the number of men in suits queued in the lobby as if they had come with a dignitary.

"Who is looking for me?" I mumbled confusingly as I looked around the lobby trying to get a glimpse of any face I was familiar with, but I couldn't register any in my head. I was about to go over to the reception when the sound of thick footsteps caught my attention, and I looked in the direction to find a man walking in my direction. He was about 6ft tall, with thick black hair that had strands of gray hair, fresh light skin, and an oval-shaped face with a sharp jawline. He stopped in front of me with a smile on his face, revealing his set of white teeth as his brown eyes gazed at me and his expensive cologne scented the air.

"I finally found you, Ms. Carter," His deep baritone voice came out with a sense of authority in it. With just a glance, anyone could tell that he was not just an ordinary man. Who is he? How did he know my name? I was still trying to figure these out when the men in suits from earlier all bowed to me.

"We finally found you, Master. We have come to take you home," My jaw dropped to the ground as I stared confusingly. What is going on?
