Chapter 5

Sunshine Carter POV

Tears streamed down my cheeks as I sat in front of the mirror and stared at my reflection. I thought I'd gotten everything I wanted and was now ready for revenge, but at the moment, my heart was betraying me and I didn't like it.

After Ray was admitted back into the hospital, Patty stayed back with him while I left to come get changed at home since I just came back and was still tired after a long day on the flight.

The sound of my ringing phone disrupted my thoughts and I answered when I saw the call was from Mr. Reynolds.

"Good evening, Ms Sunshine," His voice sounded from the other end, and I nodded.

"Hmm,"

"We have something to discuss. Do you have time tomorrow morning? Let's meet at the Chinese cafe shop,"

"Alright. I will meet you there. Let me know the time I should come over,"

"10am will be fine,"

"Alright. I will be there then," The call finally ended, and I sighed as I dropped my phone on the dressing table.

After I changed my dress, I left for the hospital in my car to spend the night with my son. I couldn't just leave my sick son with his Nanny now that I'm around, right?

It was just 7pm and I still had much time to drive to the hospital. The ride didn't take much time before I arrived, and I went to the ward immediately.

Patty was already fast asleep when I walked inside, so I woke her up.

"You should go get some rest. You can come over tomorrow," I said to her.

"But, ma'am... You can't..."

"Don't worry about me. I should spend time with my son," I insisted, and she eventually left.

Once it was just Ray and I inside the ward, I walked over to my son and hugged him on the bed. I failed to control my tears. I felt so empty inside.

I rested my head on the bed after I sat on the chair beside the bed while holding his hand.

My eyes felt heavy and I didn't try to resist it since I really needed the sleep.

I was barely asleep when I heard footsteps in the ward accompanied by a familiar scent that was sure belonged to Rayne. What the fuck does he want now?

I closed my eyes when I felt his footsteps drawing close until he was towering over me. A few seconds passed before I felt his hand on my cheek, and my heart fluttered. What does he want now? As much as I wanted to open my eyes and find out what he was doing, for some reason, I remained silent.

I heard his footsteps followed by the sound of the door opening and closing.

Sleeping in the hospital was quite uncomfortable, but I had to endure the pain because of my son.

"Mommy..." I was glad when I woke up and realized that Ray was awake.

"Son... Are you ok? You are awake?" My hands trembled as I held his hand and smiled.

"Are you hurting anywhere? Are you ok?" I bombarded him with questions, but he only touched his head and winced.

"Your head? I will get the doctor to come attend to you," I left immediately for the doctor's office. I was glad when I realized that it wasn't Rayne.

After the doctor attended to him, he assured me that he would be fine.

"Just allow him to rest, get him something to eat, and he'll be fine," He said to me before he left the ward.

"Honey... Patty will be here with you soon, and I'll go make something delicious for you to eat, ok?" I stroked his hair gently, and he nodded.

My phone beeped while I was waiting for Patty.

'Meeting in three hours. Don't forget to be here. It's very important' I sighed when I read the text from Mr. Reynolds. Many thoughts ran through my mind. I tried to think of something, maybe a reason why he asked to see me, but I couldn't come up with anything.

"You'll find out when you get there. No need to be in such haste," I said to myself as I put my phone away.

I stayed by Ray's side until Patty arrived, and I left to go make something for my son.

I paused along the walkway when I saw Rayne walking in the other direction. He slowed his pace when he saw me.

"You are here... We need to talk," He tucked his hands inside his pockets as he stood in front of me, and I scoffed. What's there to talk about?

"I don't have time to spare. Excuse me," I walked past him, but he held my hand and brought me to an abrupt halt.

"It's about your son," My heart missed a beat when he mentioned that, and I quickly turned to him.

"What is it about my son? Is he ok? Is something wrong with him?" I didn't mean to be too impulsive, but I was so worried about my son that I didn't know when I started reacting that way in front of him when all I wanted was to be careful with my emotions with him around.

"Let's talk in my office," He gently removed his hand and headed to his office. I didn't think twice before I went after him.

I didn't expect his office to be so big since I was never there while we were married. It was almost as big as our bedroom back in his house then.

"Please sit," He pointed toward the empty chair across from him, and I sat on it.

"What is it about my son? Please tell me?" I leaned forward with my hands on the desk. My skin was starting to go pale with worries and I was dying inside to know what he wanted to say about my son.

"Ray... Am I his father?" He asked out of the blue moon, and my heart missed a beat...
