Chapter 9 LOST IN THE SHADOWS

1. NADINE – ESCAPED BUT NOT SAFE

The night air was still piercingly cold as Queen drove through the empty streets. Nadine sat in the passenger seat, hands trembling, tears still rolling down her cheeks.

Lucas...

She turned to the backseat, eyes filled with worry as she saw Lucas slumped over, his body weakened, blood still seeping from the gunshot wound on his shoulder.

"Is he still breathing?" Nadine's voice quivered.

Queen glanced at Lucas through the rearview mirror, her expression tense. "He's alive. But we need to get him somewhere safe before Adrian finds us."

The mention of his name made Nadine's chest tighten.

Adrian wouldn't let them go so easily.

Every time she closed her eyes, his haunting gaze flashed in her mind-obsessive, unrelenting, a silent promise that she would never be free.

But now, for the first time, she had slipped from his grasp.

The question was: for how long?

The car sped up.

Nadine bit her lip, mind racing.

They needed a hiding place. Somewhere even Adrian Callway couldn't reach.

But did such a place even exist?

2. ADRIAN – RAGE IN THE DARKNESS

Adrian stood in the middle of the empty road, his breaths ragged.

His hands clenched, eyes burning with an uncontrollable fury.

Nadine had escaped.

For the first time, he had lost control.

And he wouldn't let this stand.

One of his men approached, his face tense. "Mr. Callway, they escaped east. We can send a team to track them-"

Adrian turned, his sharp glare instantly silencing the man.

"You let her go," his voice was low, ice-cold. "And now you think you can fix it with a pathetic search party?"

The man swallowed hard, unable to answer.

Adrian inhaled deeply, suppressing the raw anger boiling inside him.

He couldn't lose Nadine.

He wouldn't.

Pulling out his phone, he dialed a number.

A smooth voice answered, "Mr. Callway?"

"Find her," Adrian ordered, his tone deadly. "I don't care what it takes. Bring Nadine back before dawn-or pay the price."

The call ended.

Adrian closed his eyes, taking another breath.

His clenched fists slowly relaxed.

It was only a matter of time.

Nadine couldn't run forever.

3. A TEMPORARY HIDING PLACE

Queen pulled the car up to an old cabin deep in the woods.

Nadine frowned. "Where are we?"

Queen stepped out, exhaling sharply. "A safe house. It belongs to a friend's family. No one knows about this place. Not even Adrian."

Nadine scanned their surroundings.

Darkness cloaked the dense forest around them, the moon offering the only dim light. The place felt isolated, far from the city's chaos.

Maybe... they were safe. For now.

Queen helped Lucas out of the car while Nadine carefully guided him inside.

Lucas winced in pain as they laid him down on an old sofa in the center of the cabin.

Nadine knelt beside him. "You have to hold on, Lucas."

Lucas managed a weak smile despite his pale face. "Still breathing, aren't I?"

Queen quickly retrieved a first aid kit from the corner of the room. Nadine helped her clean Lucas's wound, though her hands were still trembling.

Inside the tiny cabin, they finally felt a sliver of security.

But Nadine knew this wasn't over.

Adrian would never stop.

4. ADRIAN – READY TO KILL TO GET NADINE BACK

Elsewhere in the city, Adrian sat in his office, his eyes dark with rage.

His men knelt before him, their bodies trembling in fear.

"Mr. Callway..." one of them stammered. "We lost their trail. They disappeared into the forest near the city's border."

Silence.

Adrian didn't respond.

He simply stared ahead, his breath slow and controlled.

Then-

BANG!

A gunshot echoed through the room.

One of his men collapsed onto the floor, blood pooling beneath him.

The others stiffened in terror.

Adrian lowered his gun, his face eerily calm.

"Do better," he said coldly. "Or you'll meet the same fate."

One by one, his men backed away, fear crawling up their spines.

Adrian exhaled, turning to gaze out the window.

Nadine couldn't hide forever.

He would find her.

No matter how long it took.

Because he would never let Nadine go.

5. NADINE – MUST KEEP RUNNING

Inside the cabin, Nadine sat near the window, staring at the night sky.

She should feel relieved for escaping.

But for some reason, the fear still gripped her.

"What are you thinking about?"

Lucas's voice made her turn.

He was awake, though still visibly weak.

Nadine offered a small smile. "I'm just wondering... how long can we keep running?"

Lucas met her gaze. "As long as we have to."

Queen approached, draping a blanket over Lucas. "Lucas is right. We've come too far to give up now."

Nadine nodded, though unease still lingered in her chest.

But one thing was certain.

She wouldn't go back to Adrian.

No matter how hard he tried.

She had to be free.

Yet, deep down, she knew-

This wasn't over.
