The humming noise grew louder, and Jax's eyes locked onto the entrance of the mine. He could see the shadows of ships descending from the sky, their landing lights illuminating the dusty terrain.
"We need to get out of here, now," Jax yelled, grabbing Rinneth's arm and pulling her towards the back of the mine.
Grimjack followed close behind, his blaster at the ready. "I've got our six, Captain," he said, his voice low and steady.
As they ran, the sound of blaster fire echoed through the mine, and Jax knew they were surrounded. The Red Vipers had them right where they wanted them.
Suddenly, Rinneth stopped in her tracks, her eyes fixed on a small ventilation shaft in the wall. "In here," she said, her voice barely above a whisper.
Jax hesitated for a moment, but Grimjack's urgent gesture sent him scrambling into the shaft. Rinneth followed close behind, and Grimjack brought up the rear, his blaster firing wildly as he tried to keep their pursuers at bay.
As they crawled through the narrow shaft, Jax's heart was racing with fear. They were trapped, and the Red Vipers were closing in.
But Rinneth seemed to know exactly where she was going. She led them through the winding shaft, dodging debris and leaping over obstacles.
Finally, they emerged into a bright, sunlit day. Jax blinked, his eyes adjusting slowly to the light.
They were standing on the edge of a small landing strip, surrounded by towering mountains. And parked in the center of the strip was a sleek, black ship.
Rinneth smiled, her eyes glinting with triumph. "My ship," she said. "We can escape in this."
But as Jax turned to run towards the ship, he was confronted with a shocking sight. A figure stood in front of the ship, a blaster trained directly on Jax's head.
And to Jax's horror, he realized that the figure was none other than his old friend, Arin Vex.
Arin Vex's eyes were cold and hard, his finger tightening on the trigger. "Jax, you're a hard man to find," he said, his voice dripping with malice.
Jax's eyes narrowed, his mind racing with shock and betrayal. "Arin, what's going on? Why are you working with the Red Vipers?"
Arin's smile was cruel. "Oh, I'm not working with them, Jax. I'm working for myself. And I've been waiting a long time for this moment."
Rinneth stepped forward, her eyes flashing with anger. "Arin, you're making a big mistake. The Red Vipers will use you and discard you like trash."
Arin's eyes flickered to Rinneth, and for a moment, Jax saw a glimmer of uncertainty. But then Arin's face hardened, and he turned back to Jax.
"You're just trying to distract me, Rinneth," Arin said. "But it won't work. I've got Jax right where I want him."
Grimjack stepped forward, his blaster trained on Arin. "Let him go, Arin. You're not going to hurt him."
Arin's eyes flickered to Grimjack, and he smiled again. "Oh, I'm not going to hurt him, Grimjack. I'm going to kill him. And then I'm going to collect the reward the Red Vipers are offering for his head."
Jax's eyes narrowed, his mind racing with desperation. He knew he had to think fast, or he was going to end up dead.
Suddenly, an idea struck him. "Arin, wait!" Jax said, holding up his hands. "I have something you want. Something that's worth more than any reward the Red Vipers can offer."
Arin's eyes narrowed, his finger hesitating on the trigger. "What is it?" he asked, his voice dripping with curiosity.
Jax smiled, a plan forming in his mind. "Let me go, and I'll tell you," he said, his eyes locked on Arin's.
Arin's eyes narrowed, his gaze piercing. "I'm listening," he said, his voice low and menacing.
Jax took a deep breath, his mind racing with the plan. "I have information about the artifact," he said, his voice steady. "The one the Red Vipers are looking for."
Arin's eyes flickered with interest, and he took a step closer to Jax. "What kind of information?" he asked, his voice dripping with greed.
Jax smiled, his eyes locked on Arin's. "I know where it is," he said, his voice low and confident. "And I'm willing to share that information with you... for a price."
Arin's eyes narrowed, his gaze piercing. "What kind of price?" he asked, his voice low and menacing.
Jax smiled again, his mind racing with the plan. "Let me and my crew go free," he said, his voice steady. "And I'll give you the information you want."
Arin's eyes flickered with hesitation, and for a moment, Jax thought he saw a glimmer of uncertainty. But then Arin's face hardened, and he nodded.
"Deal," he said, his voice low and menacing. "But if you're trying to double-cross me, Jax... you'll regret it."
Jax smiled, his eyes locked on Arin's. "I'm not trying to double-cross you, Arin," he said, his voice steady. "I just want to get out of here alive."
Arin's eyes narrowed, his gaze piercing. "We'll see about that," he said, his voice low and menacing.
As Arin lowered his blaster, Jax let out a sigh of relief. He had bought himself and his crew some time, but he knew that Arin was not a man to be trusted.
What would happen next? Would Jax be able to get out of this situation alive?
