I was out of time. My back slammed against a jagged tree, my breath hitching. The wolves emerged, their eyes glowing like fiery embers in the gloom. Rivals. Enemies. Their jagged teeth glistened in the pale moonlight as they advanced, every step tightening the noose around me.
The memory of Lucas Blackwood's icy smirk burned in my mind. "I'll make sure the world knows your secret," he'd said, his voice slicing through me like a blade. I hadn't planned on betrayal-not from him, not like this.
I clenched my fists, trying to ignore the sharp sting of the wound on my arm. My secret couldn't fall into their hands. My survival wasn't just for me-it was for the pack, for everything we'd fought to protect.
The alpha of the rival pack-a monstrous gray wolf-stepped closer, his massive form dwarfing me. He shifted mid-step, his human form just as imposing.
"Give up," he sneered, his voice like gravel. "You can't win."
Panic clawed at me, but I shoved it down. "Come closer," I spat, my voice sharper than I felt. "See how well that works out for you."
A low growl rippled through the pack. I couldn't fight them all, not alone, but I refused to cower. If I was going down, I'd take at least one of them with me.
The first wolf lunged.
Before his teeth could sink into my throat, a feral roar split the air. Something massive hurtled into the clearing, striking like a thunderbolt. A dark wolf-a predator like no other-landed between me and the enemy. He shifted seamlessly mid-motion, towering over the attackers with an aura of raw power that sucked the air from my lungs.
My heart stuttered.
Him.
Dark hair slicked back from the rain. Piercing eyes that gleamed like molten steel. His presence was magnetic, commanding-and utterly terrifying.
Lucas Blackwood.
He moved like a shadow, swift and merciless. The wolves fell back, their snarls replaced with uneasy whines. When he spoke, his voice was a blade of ice.
"Leave. Now."
The pack hesitated, their alpha meeting Lucas's gaze. "She's a traitor," he growled.
"And now she's under my protection." Lucas's words were soft, but they cracked like thunder. "Run while I'm feeling merciful."
A tense silence stretched. Then, one by one, the wolves retreated into the shadows, leaving only their alpha.
"You'll regret this," the alpha hissed, retreating after his pack.
When they were gone, I collapsed against the tree, my breath coming in ragged gasps.
"Why?" My voice was a whisper, sharp with suspicion. "Why save me, Lucas?"
He didn't answer immediately, his gaze raking over me like a cold wind. "You're bleeding," he said, ignoring my question.
I slapped his hand away when he reached for me. "Don't pretend you care."
His jaw tightened, his voice dropping an octave. "This isn't about care. It's about survival. You're valuable to the pack."
My laugh was bitter. "A pawn. That's all I am, isn't it?"
His silence was answer enough.
"You don't have a choice," Lucas said, his tone flat. "The pack has decided. You're coming with me."
"What?" My voice cracked. "Decided what?"
He stepped closer, his presence suffocating. "You're to be my mate."
The words hit me like a physical blow.
"No," I said, shaking my head. "Absolutely not. You can't-"
"You think this is negotiable?" His voice was a dark whisper. "Our packs are on the brink of war, Emily. This union is the only way to stop it. Or would you rather watch your family die?"
My defiance wavered, his words cutting deeper than I wanted to admit.
"This isn't about you," he said, his voice softening for just a moment. "It's about survival. Do you understand that?"
I stared at him, my mind spinning. Trust him? Follow him? The mate bond tugged at me like a cruel joke, a thread tying me to a man I didn't want to need.
But the alternative was worse.
I pushed past him, my steps unsteady. "Fine," I muttered, not meeting his gaze. "I'll go."
As we approached the edge of his territory, the towering gates of his pack loomed before me, an ominous reminder of what lay ahead. Lucas stopped, turning to face me.
"From this moment on, you're mine," he said, his voice low and unyielding. "Whether you accept it or not is irrelevant."
His words ignited a storm inside me-fear, anger, and something else I couldn't name.
The gates creaked open, and I crossed the threshold, my heart pounding as I stepped into the unknown.
