But then, through the trees, he saw her-Mira. Her back was to him, standing in the clearing. But she wasn't alone.
A figure stood beside her, tall, with a powerful, almost dangerous presence. The man's golden eyes gleamed in the moonlight, and his posture was relaxed, yet there was something about him that made the hairs on the back of Damien's neck stand up.
Mira turned slowly, her sharp eyes locking onto Damien's. "What are you doing here?" she asked, her voice icy, as always.
Damien didn't move, his gaze flickering from Mira to the stranger. He could feel the tension in the air, thick and heavy. He wasn't sure why, but he couldn't shake the feeling that this guy didn't belong in the woods with her.
"I should be asking you that," Damien shot back, his voice sharp. His heart was racing, not just because he'd followed her here, but because of the strange man standing so close to her.
Mira's eyes flicked to the stranger, her expression unreadable. Then, she turned her gaze back to Damien. "This is Ryder," she said simply.
Damien's stomach twisted. Ryder. He'd never heard of him before, but there was something about the way Mira said his name-something that made Damien feel instantly uneasy.
Ryder stepped forward, his eyes glinting with an intensity that was hard to ignore. "I think you're the one who doesn't belong here, Damien," he said, his voice smooth, but laced with something darker. "This is none of your business."
Damien's fists clenched. "I don't need anyone to tell me what's my business," he snapped, stepping closer, glaring at Ryder. "And I don't need you, either."
Ryder's smirk widened, a mocking glint in his eyes. "Oh, you're a tough guy, aren't you? Too bad that doesn't matter here," he replied, his tone dripping with disdain.
The air between them was thick with hostility. Damien could feel it-Ryder wasn't just some stranger. He didn't just dislike him; there was a dangerous edge to him, like he was daring Damien to make a move.
"You're out of your depth," Ryder added, his voice quiet but threatening. "You have no idea what you're dealing with."
Damien's eyes narrowed. "And you think I'm just supposed to back down?" he growled.
Mira, who had been watching the exchange with a cold, detached expression, finally spoke. "Enough, both of you," she said, her voice low and commanding. But it didn't have the effect Damien thought it would. If anything, her words only made the tension grow sharper.
Damien glanced at her, confused. Why was she so calm about this? Why wasn't she stopping Ryder from acting like this?
He turned his attention back to Ryder. "I'm not going anywhere," Damien said, his voice firm. "If this is your way of threatening me, it's not going to work."
Ryder took a step forward, his posture now more menacing. "You should leave, Damien," he said, his voice dark with warning. "You're not going to win this fight, no matter how hard you try."
Damien didn't flinch. "I'm not scared of you," he said, although he could feel a cold shiver running down his spine. He was starting to feel like he'd walked into something he couldn't understand, something far bigger than him.
Mira's voice broke through the silence again, but this time, her words stung. "I told you to go, Damien. This isn't your place."
Damien's chest tightened. He had been expecting resistance from her, but not like this. Not this cold dismissal.
He turned away, his heart pounding in his chest. But just as he took a step, Ryder's voice stopped him.
"You think you can just walk away after everything you've done?" Ryder's voice was like ice, cutting through the tension. "You're a fool if you think this is over."
Damien paused but didn't turn around. "I don't know who you are or why you're here," he said, his voice steady, "but I'm not afraid of you. And I'm not afraid of anyone."
Mira's voice was soft but final. "Go home, Damien," she said again, the command in her tone unmistakable.
Damien felt something inside him snap. This was it. The wall that Mira always put up was impenetrable. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn't get through to her.
With one last glance at Ryder-who was now watching him with barely concealed hostility-Damien turned and walked away, his steps heavy as he made his way back through the trees.
But as he moved deeper into the forest, Ryder's words echoed in his mind: "You're not going to win this fight."
