Chapter 4 The breaking point

**Chapter 4:

The ambulance arrived too late to stop the damage. Nonna's father had fallen into a coma, his vital signs unstable as the paramedics rushed him to the hospital. Every step they took felt like a heavy weight on her chest, each one sinking her deeper into despair. The doctors had given little hope. The shock of what had happened, coupled with the years of built-up stress, had taken its toll.

Sitting by her father's bedside, Nonna barely recognized the world around her. She was numb, disconnected from everything that had once held any meaning in her life. The cold, sterile room felt like a prison, and the beeping of the machines only reminded her of the fragility of life.

Her father, the man who had built their empire with his bare hands, was now lying unconscious, a shell of the man he had been. The weight of his silent suffering pressed down on her, and she couldn't escape it.

"You've done enough," a voice broke through the haze of her thoughts, pulling her from her daze.

Williams stood in the doorway of the hospital room, his presence commanding, as usual. He had not left her side since the incident, despite the distance he tried to maintain. His dark eyes, usually cold and distant, now seemed filled with something else-a quiet determination, even concern. But it was hard to read. He was a mystery to her, and right now, she wasn't sure she had the energy to figure him out.

"I know you're hurting," he continued, his voice low, measured. "But you can't keep punishing yourself."

Nonna bit her lip, her eyes never leaving her father's still form. "What am I supposed to do, Williams? My father's in a coma. I don't even know if he'll wake up."

She blinked back fresh tears, but they came anyway, spilling down her cheeks. "And now... the business... it's falling apart. Everything he worked for is on the verge of crumbling, and it's all my fault."

Williams stepped closer, his footsteps light but sure. His gaze softened, though his usual indifference was still there, a shield protecting his true feelings.

"It's not your fault," he said simply, yet there was an undeniable strength in his words. "But I know you feel responsible. The weight you carry is crushing, but you can't carry it alone."

Nonna looked up at him, her eyes red and swollen from the tears. "I don't know what to do anymore. I never asked for any of this."

"You didn't ask for your father's condition, or for the business to fail, but it's happening nonetheless. And you can either let it consume you, or you can take action." His voice was steady, but there was an underlying authority in his words.

Nonna wanted to yell at him. She wanted to tell him that he couldn't possibly understand, that he didn't know what it felt like to lose everything. But she didn't. His words, though blunt, seemed to carry a weight that she couldn't ignore.

"Everything my father built... it's slipping away. The company's on the brink of bankruptcy. The creditors are closing in, and I... I don't know how to fix it." Nonna's voice cracked, and she sank into the chair beside her father's bed, defeated.

Williams stood there for a moment, his eyes scanning the room, his mind working. "I can help you with that," he finally said, his voice firm. "But you have to trust me, Nonna. You have to accept that some things are beyond your control. This isn't a fight you can win on your own."

Nonna swallowed hard, trying to process his words. Her heart was heavy with the weight of everything. Her father, the company, the endless pressure to keep it all together. It was too much. Too much for one person, especially when she felt like she was falling apart.

"I can't keep pretending everything's fine," she whispered, more to herself than to him. "I can't handle this anymore."

Williams' gaze softened, and for the first time, she saw a hint of something other than his usual coldness. There was a glimmer of compassion, something she hadn't expected from the man who had offered her a way out with that forced marriage proposal.

"You don't have to do it alone," he repeated, his voice softening. "Let me help you. Marry me, Nonna. I'll handle the business. I'll handle everything."

The words hung in the air between them, and Nonna felt them hit her like a punch to the gut. She wasn't sure if it was the pressure of the situation or the lingering remnants of what had happened between them, but she could feel the weight of his offer.

"I... I don't know if I can," Nonna admitted, her voice barely a whisper.

"You don't have to decide right now," Williams said gently. "But you don't have to face this alone either."

Her heart raced as she sat there, torn between the man who offered her a lifeline and the wreckage of everything she thought she knew about love, family, and loyalty. She wasn't sure what to do, but she knew one thing for certain: nothing would ever be the same.

The room was silent, save for the steady beep of the heart monitor. Nonna's thoughts were a whirlwind, and in the quiet, she tried to find some semblance of clarity. But the truth was, she didn't know what the future held anymore. She didn't even know if her father would wake up. The only thing she could focus on right now was survival.

She looked up at Williams, her heart heavy with uncertainty. "What if... what if I make everything worse?"

Williams stepped closer, his hand resting on her shoulder in an unexpected gesture of comfort. "You won't. I won't let you."

For the first time since the disaster had started, Nonna allowed herself to feel something other than dread. There was a flicker of hope, but it was small and fragile. She wasn't sure if she could trust Williams-or if she could trust herself-but maybe, just maybe, she didn't have to fight this battle alone.

"Okay," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "I'll marry you."

Williams gave a subtle nod, his face unreadable, but she could see the faintest trace of approval in his eyes. "We'll get through this, Nonna. I'll make sure of it."
