Chapter 2 Deception in the shadows

**Chapter 2: Deception in the Shadows**

Nonna had been enjoying herself, more than she had in a long time, as the night wore on. The music pulsed through the air, and she swirled around the dance floor with Williams, her heart light and her worries momentarily forgotten. He had a way of making her feel alive, as if the weight of her past heartbreak was nothing more than a distant memory.

As they danced, the conversation between them deepened, a quiet connection forming. For the first time in ages, Nonna felt like she was truly seen, not as an heiress or a symbol of wealth, but as just another person.

"Are you sure you're not bored yet?" Williams asked, his voice smooth as silk, eyes glinting with a hint of amusement.

Nonna laughed, feeling freer than she had in months. "I don't think I ever get bored with a good conversation."

They shared a smile, and for a moment, it seemed like they were the only two people in the room. But as the dance ended, Nonna glanced around the crowded ballroom, noticing that Veronica had slipped away, her absence oddly noticeable.

"Where did Veronica go?" Nonna muttered to herself, her gaze scanning the room for her best friend. Veronica had been so eager to be at the center of the action, and now, Nonna couldn't spot her anywhere.

Williams noticed the subtle shift in her mood. "Something wrong?"

Nonna hesitated but shook her head. "I'm probably just being paranoid. She's probably just off somewhere, enjoying herself."

Williams nodded, but the feeling of unease lingered in the pit of her stomach.

---

Back at the bar, Veronica had her eyes trained on Nonna from across the room. Her smile was almost too sweet, too calculating, as she poured a dark liquid into a glass-a vial of something she'd obtained earlier that evening. The crowd was busy, distracted, and Nonna was always so trusting. It would be easy.

With a deft hand, Veronica slipped the liquid into Nonna's drink, stirring it just enough to mix. She smirked as she caught sight of Nonna across the room, still laughing with Williams, blissfully unaware of the manipulation unfolding around her.

"One little sip, and she'll be out for the night," Veronica whispered to herself, savoring the thought of watching her best friend fall from grace. She wanted to take Nonna's place in the world-wanted to be the one in control, not the sweet, trusting heiress who had it all.

After a brief moment, she made her way back to Nonna, a glass of champagne in hand. She approached her, the gleam of triumph in her eyes hidden beneath a mask of concern.

"Hey, Nonna, you look a little tired. Here, have another drink," Veronica offered, her voice saccharine sweet.

Nonna, still distracted by the whirlwind of her conversation with Williams, smiled faintly and accepted the drink. "Thanks, Veronica. You're a lifesaver."

"Of course, hon," Veronica said, barely containing the malice in her tone. "You deserve a good time tonight."

With that, she handed over the glass, watching as Nonna took a sip. Her heart raced with excitement as she imagined everything falling into place. The plan was in motion.

---

The effects of the drug were almost immediate. Nonna's vision blurred slightly, and the edges of the room seemed to fade into the background. She shook her head, trying to clear the dizziness, but it only made things worse.

"Nonna?" Williams asked, his voice laced with concern. He reached out to steady her. "Are you alright?"

She blinked up at him, her gaze unfocused. "I... I don't feel so good," she murmured, swaying slightly.

Williams cursed under his breath. Something was off. "You need to sit down. Come on."

Without argument, she allowed him to guide her to a quieter corner, her steps unsteady. Williams knew something was wrong but couldn't quite place it. He kept his arm around her, his grip firm but gentle, trying to keep her upright.

"Stay with me, Nonna," he urged softly, his concern deepening. He guided her to a plush seat at the edge of the room, his eyes scanning the crowd for any sign of danger. What had happened to her?

---

Nonna's head spun, and everything felt so far away. Her body was numb, heavy, and yet her mind was frantically trying to keep up. She felt like she was drifting in and out of consciousness. When she opened her eyes, she saw Williams standing in front of her, his eyes searching her face as if he could fix everything with just his gaze.

"Nonna, you're not okay," Williams said, his voice strained with a depth of emotion she hadn't expected. He wasn't just concerned for her-he seemed to be carrying some weight himself. His brows furrowed, and his hands were shaking slightly as he adjusted her position.

"I don't..." She trailed off, her mind foggy. "What happened to me?" She tried to sit up, but her body felt so weak, as if it was betraying her.

"You were drugged," he answered, his voice clipped. He looked around the room, fury flashing in his eyes. "Who did this to you?" His jaw tightened, his emotions clearly raging just beneath the surface.

"I don't know," she whispered, her voice barely audible. She tried to focus on his face, but the world felt like it was spinning too fast. "Veronica... She gave me a drink..." Her words came out slurred, and she cringed at how fragile she sounded.

Williams' anger flared, but he suppressed it quickly. He didn't want her to see him losing control. "You're safe now. Just stay with me."

He picked her up carefully, cradling her in his arms like she was something fragile, something precious. He couldn't understand why he was so deeply moved by her-he couldn't afford to care about anyone-but something about her pulled at him in ways he couldn't describe.

---

In the quiet luxury of the hotel room, Nonna awoke slowly, her head pounding, her body feeling heavy and disoriented. Her gaze fluttered open, and she found herself in a plush bed, the dim light casting shadows over her surroundings. Panic surged through her as she tried to sit up, but she was immediately stopped by a wave of dizziness.

Her breath hitched when she saw Williams sitting at the edge of the bed, his hand resting on the sheets beside her. His dark eyes met hers, filled with something unreadable-concern? Guilt? Maybe both.

"What... what happened?" Nonna whispered, panic creeping into her chest. Her heart was racing, but she couldn't recall anything that had happened after she'd taken that last drink from Veronica.

"You were drugged," Williams said softly, though the sharp edge in his tone hinted at his frustration. "We need to talk, Nonna."

She glanced around the room, trying to piece together the fragments of her memory, but everything felt like it was slipping through her fingers. "I don't remember anything..." Her voice faltered, and her eyes grew wide with fear. "Did... did we...?"

Williams didn't answer immediately. His eyes flickered with something deep, something dark, but he swallowed it back.

Before he could speak, the door to the room crashed open, and a flood of flashes filled the air. Paparazzi burst in, their cameras flashing relentlessly, and the harsh buzz of questions overwhelmed her.

"Nonna Hathaway! Is it true? Did you sleep with Williams Vose?"

Her heart stopped. This wasn't happening.

She barely had time to process before Veronica walked in, a triumphant smirk on her face, watching the scene unfold as if she were the director of a play.

Veronica's words sliced through the air with venom. "Oh, Nonna," she cooed, "this is what happens when you trust the wrong people. Who knew that you'd become so desperate to keep your title?"

Nonna's world shattered as she saw the look of pure malicious satisfaction in Veronica's eyes. The betrayal she'd never seen coming hit her like a physical blow.

"I trusted you..." she whispered, her voice breaking, the tears she'd been holding back threatening to spill.

"Look at you now," Veronica sneered, her eyes glinting with cruel amusement. "Everyone will know exactly what kind of person you really are now. A woman willing to sleep her way to the top."

Williams' gaze hardened as the paparazzi continued their barrage of questions and flashbulbs, but all Nonna could hear was the cruel sting of her best friend's words echoing in her ears. The reality of what had happened began to sink in, and her stomach twisted in anguish. She was no longer the sweet heiress everyone adored-she was something far worse in their eyes.

As the flashes continued, all Nonna could do was sit in shock, her heart breaking as she looked between Williams and Veronica.
