Chapter 5 Disappointed

Melissa's POV

'This is so embarrassing ' I thought to myself.

I held the bed cover around myself firmly and got down from the bed to pick up my dress off the floor. I dashed into the bathroom, and took a quick shower. I wrapped a towel around and stepped out of the shower. I looked at myself in the mirror with a smile on my face.

'Today sure is my lucky day'. I thought to myself, I felt like my dream was finally coming true, the man I had loved and dreamt of for years was my, for now I thought.

I kept smiling foolishly at my reflection, I calmed my excited nerves and quickly wore my clothes. I got dressed and came out of the bathroom. When I came out Davies was still on the phone, when he noticed that I was out he picked up his jacket while he was instructing the person at the other end of the phone. After a few minutes he was done with his call. With his attention on me he said

"If you are done let's get going ".

I was a bit confused, didn't he say we will talk when I am done so what does he mean by 'let's get going ' going exactly where?

When Davies noticed that I was confused he added

"We will talk about it in the car".

After Davies said this he walked towards the door, I quickly followed him. We left the hotel together, and got into Davies' car. His assistant was waiting for us to get in before he drove out of the hotel.

" What happened earlier was a plot against me to throw me off balance and destroy my reputation. You don't need to know the details as it's none of your business''.

Davies said he wasn't bothered about me, he didn't care if I understood a word he said or not as he continued.

"Are you in a relationship with any one, if yes I am sorry you have to end things with him, I will settle him. If not, that is better as it makes everything easier. It is known to everyone now that you are my fiancée so you better watch how you act in public".

I sat there, frozen, my eyes fixed on Davies as I struggled to process his words. Despite my long-held attraction to him, I couldn't shake off the feeling that he was disrespecting me, disregarding my thoughts and emotions as if they were insignificant. His firm tone and assumption that I would simply follow him without question made me feel uneasy, like I was just an accessory to his plans rather than a person with my own thoughts.

"What if I am not interested, you make it seem as though I don't have a choice ".

Davies chuckled and said

" You seem to have forgotten what you did last night at the bar, you were hitting on me. You're interested in me so I am sure you won't reject my offer"

When Davies said that I was speechless, I had really forgotten what I did but after Davies' reminder everything came back, I was embarrassed.

"What if I did? I did what I did because I was drunk ".

Davies didn't bother to reply to me, he probably felt like it was meaningless engaging with me.

"Where do you live? I will drop you off. This is my card, call me when you are free tomorrow, I will brief you on everything you need to know. Go home and get yourself ready".

I took the card from him and gave him the address to my apartment .

When I got home I called her mom to inform her.

" Hey mom "

"I know "

" Guess you've seen the news already ". My mom didn't say anything for a while before she continued.

I could feel my mother's anger as she spoke to me over the phone. "Are you really going to marry him? I could have sworn you weren't even dating anyone. And now, out of the blue, you're engaged to Arthur Davies? Melissa, don't try to spin some tale, I know you too well. You can't fool me that easily. Just come home right now, we need to talk about this in person."

My mom ended the call before I could even say anything else, I knew my mom was definitely furious, I had no choice but to pack my things and head home.

I boarded a taxi to the family house. When I got home I realised that everyone was back and they were all waiting for me. My dad looked at me but didn't utter a word. My brother was different; it seemed like he had a lot to say.

" Melissa Austin, you are really wonderful, you are about to get married and we had to find out about it from the news".

My elder brother's face was a deep shade of red, his eyes filled with anger. I couldn't quite tell the root of his anger, was it the fact that I had kept my engagement a secret from the family, or was it the very idea of me getting married that had him seething? Whatever it was, things were not looking good for me.

Well I can't be blamed for this I also only found out about my engagement.

"Say something Melissa, your silence is not really helping . We need to know what's going on."

At that moment I could swear that Mark would strangle me. I have always been his troublesome little sister but that was the first time I saw him so angry towards me.

I felt a pang of guilt and shame. I had forgotten about my arranged engagement, and the fact that I was supposed to meet my fiancé soon. My mind had been so preoccupied with Davies that I had pushed that aspect of my life to the back of my mind. "I...I can explain," I stuttered, but he continued, his voice filled with disappointment.
