Chapter 5 Comforting Solace

NATHAN

"No! This cannot be!"

I slammed my fist hard on the table as my eyes reddened with anger.

What the heck is he even saying?

Alexis is going through a divorce process with Logan and is losing everything to him.

Even though I have no doubt that that jerk-ass Logan is capable of doing that but...Alexis, she doesn't deserve that.

"The information is hundred percent accurate, sir." The secret investigator I had hired responded firmly.

I exhaled deeply, staring at the surface as I clasped my hands together before leaning back on my chair.

"That bastard," I muttered.

I cannot believe he did what he did to someone like Alexis.

A perfect, gorgeous, smart, charismatic, and confident lady like her deserves nothing but the best, and I blamed myself for not approaching her before, allowing him to even hurt her.

Poor Alexis, she must be going through a lot, and this is the time I need to step in because she needs me the most.

"You can take your leave," I ordered and the investigator nodded before walking towards the exit of the office.

"Wait," I muttered and he paused.

"If you find anything new make sure to be the first to let me know, okay?" I instructed.

"Your wish is my command, Mr Nathan." He answered and with that, he finally exited the office.

I couldn't brush the thought off my mind, it was eating me up. I failed to give Alexis the protection she needed. I have had the chance to approach her, but I failed. Only I knew I could give her the best treatment that she deserved.

The countless times she had smiled flashed through my brain before it was suddenly replaced by the sadness and the look of worry I saw on her face the other time.

A soft knock came by, disrupting me from my thoughts.

"Come in," I replied, glancing at the door as I watched the door gently open, revealing Anna.

"Can I come in?" She peeped in while standing by the door.

"I already answered that, Anna." I shrugged, and a sly smile appeared on her lips before she fully walked in, taking a seat.

She dropped a file in front of me.

"Mr Nathan, everything is going smoothly. I was able to get a hold of the best wedding planners in town, and these are their samples, so I decided to bring them to you so you can decide the theme, the decors, and whether you want a big wedding or not," Anna explained and I nodded my head as she further explains, pointing out the pictures.

I tried hard to focus on what she was saying; my mind couldn't stop thinking about her.

"Sir...are you listening?" Anna looked up at me, arching her brows.

"Um, yeah, yeah," I answered, immediately.

She smirked.

"Okay, what was the last thing I said?" Anna interrogated, her gaze fixed on me.

I massaged my temples, trying to remember, but I couldn't.

She sighed.

"You are not fine, Mr. Nathan; something is wrong with you and..."

"Everything is fine, Anna." I cut her off.

"You know what, just leave the files here; I'll discuss it with Alexis first, then together, we'll decide how we want the wedding to be," I concluded, closing it.

"You can take your leave, Anna," I added, and though not looking so convinced, she had no option but to obey me.

"Alright, sir. Call me if you need anything. And please it's important if you both make a decision early so we can get back to the planners as soon as we can." She bowed and headed to the door, and just as she opened the door, someone also opened the door, and it happened to be Alexis.

"Excuse me." She uttered softly, all her confidence disappearing as she stepped into the office with sadness all written boldly on her face, but even with that, her beauty glows like a ray of the early morning sun.

"Good day, Mr Nathan." She greeted.

"Alexis, how are you?" I asked and she bowed her head, fighting through tears.

"I'm...I'm good." She retorted with a fake faint smile.

Maybe she came here to share with me about her divorce or what Logan did to her.

To be honest, I was initially shocked at her sudden acceptance of my proposal, but the feedback I received from my investigation solved the mystery.

Alexis kept stroking her hair behind her ears nervously, and as I stared at her, my heart ached.

No matter how hard she tried, she still looked broken and shattered, and I tried my best not to blurt out that I knew everything. Maybe she came here to tell me, so I don't have to ask first.

"Go on, Alexis," I said.

"You have a meeting scheduled for 3:00pm with the Smith company," Alexis stated and my face dropped.

This isn't what I expected her to say to me.

"Okay, forward their appointment to my Gmail," I replied.

"I'll do that right away," Alexis answered and with that, she stood up.

Wait... isn't she going to say anything about Logan?

I can't just let her leave, we have to talk about it, that too now.

"Alexis," I called and she looked at me.

"Sit back, please," I ordered and she obeyed.

"What about your husband, Logan? Or should I say...Ex-husband?"

I exclaimed, and her jaw dropped; she gasped, shocked, probably at how I knew, but come on, she shouldn't be; I am Nathan Cole; I can know anything I want to know.

She slightly widened her eyes.

"Surprised?" I asked, but she didn't reply.

"You are soon to be Nathan Cole's wife; it's my duty to know everything about you, Alexis; don't even try to hide anything because I know everything, Alexis," I exclaimed, and I watched her exhale deeply while I smirked.

"How...how did you know?" Alexis mumbled.

"That's not important right now; what's important is that you answer my question," I responded with a calculated smile.
