Chapter 6 Urgent Call

ALEXIS

My heart skipped a beat at his question. The certainty in his voice made my heart pound. It doesn't look like he was asking me a question because he wanted to know, but because he knows and just wants to confirm.

I gently gazed up at him, and his eyes were fixed on me, waiting for an answer.

I am not surprised he knows; he's Nathan, and he can know anything, however, I didn't expect him to pry into my affairs; but then, we are getting married, so he kinda has the right to.

At this point, there is no need to lie to him.

I took a deep breath, figuring out how to answer it without diving deep into what happened.

"Whatever you heard, is right," I mumbled.

I don't want to discuss it at all; it'll only bring me down.

How do I narrate to him everything that happened? That I caught my husband cheating with my sister, and neither of them showed any remorse about it? Or that my lawyer, whom I thought would be my backbone helping me to secure a safe divorce, turns out to be a betrayer too? Or that I lose everything within a blink of an eye.

A tear fell from my eyes and I quickly wiped it using my thumb.

I don't want him to see me cry; I don't want to appear weak.

"It's okay, you can cry, but while doing that, know that they aren't worth your tears," Nathan said, his voice soft and somehow comforting.

He handed me a tissue.

"Thank you." I sniffed and dried my eyes.

"I can't believe it. It wasn't a dream, Nathan. It wasn't a terrible nightmare, it's the reality."

I lamented.

"You don't have to talk about it if you are not ready to discuss it yet; I only need confirmation of my investigation," Nathan said.

I nodded and sniffed again.

"I just want you to know one thing: you are a brave woman, and this is something you can overcome. You don't have to dwell in the darkness of what happened to you; it should be your strength and not your weakness. Okay? I'm saying this to you as your boss, who watches you grow into a successful woman and believes in you, and not as someone who wants to go into a contract marriage with you." Mr Nathan stated.

"As the owner of this company, our employee's welfare is a priority, so be fine, okay?" A little smile crept out from the corner of his lips.

I exhaled deeply.

Like he read my mind. This isn't going to be my weakness, but rather my strength, the motivation that is going to drive me towards one thing. Vengeance!

"I appreciate, Mr Nathan. I feel better after talking to you." I said sincerely.

"Don't mention." He replied, before snapping his finger like he remembered something.

"so, you don't have a house?" Mr Nathan asked with a short giggle, almost sounding sarcastic.

I nodded a bit.

"Obviously. I said he took away everything." I replied, trying to hide my level of annoyance because it was annoying the way he asked.

Nathan stood up from his chair, and my eyes trailed over him as he came closer to me and then bent closer to me; his soft hands landed on my face, and I moved back, startled. It was like an electric shock ran through my veins.

He smiled before moving back.

What is wrong with him? I mean, yeah, we are getting married, but he doesn't have the right to touch me.

"I think you should move in with me, in my Mansion." He muttered before sitting on the chair opposite me, his legs crossed.

"What...No!" I exclaimed.

"Why No?" Mr Nathan inquired, his gaze fixed on mine.

"I don't want to become a burden to you," I responded, playing with my fingers.

Our closeness somehow made me nervous.

"A burden? Seriously?" He arched his brows.

"You are going to be my wife, we are getting married, Alexis. So, tell me, how are you going to become a burden to me? It's Nathan Cole you are talking about. I can take care of the whole world, and that would not be a burden to me. Talk less of you, a smart, pretty lady." Mr Nathan stated and somehow, my lips curved into a smile.

His compliment made my heart flutter.

It feels good to be remembered that you are pretty and smart. Last time I heard this...I cannot even remember, not even from my husband, I mean ex-husband Logan. He was more focused on my imperfections.

The thought of what I went through brought more pain to my heart, the fact that I saw all the red flags and I ignored them, believing he loved me genuinely.

Yeah, call me foolish, I know I am one.

"So, what do you say? Are you in?" Nathan asked.

I kept mute for a while, trying to process everything. Moving in with Mr Nathan wouldn't be such a bad idea. Besides, I don't have anywhere to go aside from the hotel I lodged in to spend the night the other night.

"Okay." I finally muttered and I noticed he looked relieved.

"Great choice. I'll call the maids to get your room ready. And guess what? I'm going to drive you there myself, so you are lucky today. From your boss to your chauffeur." Mr Nathan smirked.

I chuckled.

"No, thank you. I can find my way to your Mansion. You have already done more than enough for me, which I appreciate a lot." I protested.

"And I insist. So, shall we?" Mr Nathan stood up, carrying his car keys.

I couldn't say no, so I quietly obeyed and stood up, the door was knocked.

"Who could that be?" Mr Nathan asked before glancing at the door.

"Who is there?"

"It's Anna." Anna's voice echoed from outside.

"Anna, oh, come in," Nathan responded and the door opened following his reply.

"I'm so sorry for coming back again; your Mom just called; she said you should meet her at the family house right now," Anna announced.

Nathan paused and looked at me before looking back at Anna.

"Mom? We didn't have any meeting arrangements with her and..."

"It's okay, you can go to your Mom since she mentioned it's urgent." I interrupted him.

"No, Alexis, Mom can wait, you don't know the house," Nathan argued.

I smiled.

"Yes, but with an address, I sure would find my way there. Don't worry, trust me." I said and he reluctantly agreed.

"Fine." He rolled his eyes.

"But we need to discuss with Mom about wanting to see me urgently." He murmured to Anna, and it was quite funny.
