Chapter 5 Unraveling The Threads

Lulu's hands trembled as she gripped the steering wheel, her mind a whirl of confusion and disbelief. She barely registered the world around her as she drove through the winding streets of Monrovia, her thoughts consumed by the conversation at the coffee shop. The words echoed in her head like a persistent drumbeat.

She wanted to scream, to shake herself out of the nightmare she was trapped in. He looked up when she entered, his lips curving into a soft smile, but Lulu could see the exhaustion in his eyes. She had always prided herself on being able to read him, on understanding the little details that others might miss. But tonight, his gaze didn't hold the same warmth it once did. Instead, there was something guarded in his expression, a distance that wasn't there before.

"Lulu," he said, his voice warm, though it didn't reach his eyes. "You're home early. Everything okay?"

She hesitated, her throat tight. "We need to talk."

Mafred's smile faltered, and he set his phone down, his posture immediately shifting as he sat up straighter. "Talk about what?"

Lulu's heart raced, her breath coming in shallow gasps. She had never felt so unsure of anything in her life. She wanted to believe him, to trust him, but the seed of doubt had been planted, and it was growing rapidly. She couldn't ignore it.

"About you," she said, her voice steady but firm. "About who you really are."

Mafred's expression changed instantly, the warmth disappearing from his face as his brows furrowed in confusion. "What are you talking about?"

Lulu stepped forward, her fists clenched at her sides. She wasn't going to back down. Not this time.

"I know about your business dealings, Mafred. I know about the people you're involved with. The criminals, the corruption. The lies."

There was a long pause. For a moment, it seemed as if time itself had stopped. Mafred didn't move, didn't speak. His eyes narrowed, studying her as if trying to gauge whether she was serious or not.

Finally, he let out a low, almost inaudible chuckle. "You're being paranoid. What are you talking about, Lulu? I don't know what you think you know, but this isn't what it seems."

Lulu's heart sank. The way he said it, so dismissive, made her blood run cold. It was the same reaction he had whenever she asked him questions about his past, about the specifics of his empire. Always brushing her off, always deflecting.

She wasn't going to let him get away with it this time.

"Don't lie to me, Mafred," she said, her voice rising. "I spoke to someone. Someone who knows exactly what's going on. I know you're not the man you've pretended to be."

Mafred's expression darkened, the flicker of something dangerous crossing his face. For a split second, Lulu saw a side of him she had never seen before-cold, calculating, ruthless. The warmth he had always exuded seemed to evaporate, replaced by something far more unsettling.

"Who did you talk to?" he demanded, his voice low and sharp. "Tell me. Who's been filling your head with lies?"

Lulu stepped back, her chest tightening. She had never seen him like this-angry, threatening. She had always thought she knew him, but now she wasn't sure if she even recognized him.

"Who are you, Mafred?" she whispered, the words tasting like acid on her tongue. "Who are you really?"

Mafred stood up suddenly, his chair scraping against the floor as he walked toward her, his presence imposing. "You don't know what you're asking, Lulu. You don't understand the world I'm part of. I did what I had to do to get here. I built something, something that could change everything. But you? You're better off not knowing the truth. You have no idea how deep this goes."

Lulu's mind raced as she tried to make sense of what he was saying. He was admitting something. Something far darker than she had ever imagined. He wasn't just involved in some shady deals-he was entrenched in it. But how far did it go? What did he mean by "you're better off not knowing"?

Her breath caught in her throat as he stepped closer, his eyes never leaving hers. "I tried to protect you, Lulu. I tried to keep you out of this, but you couldn't help yourself, could you?"

Lulu's heart pounded in her chest. "Protect me?" she repeated, disbelief in her voice. "From what? From you?"

Mafred's lips tightened into a thin line. "You should have stayed away from all of this. You should have stayed in your little world where everything was simple, where you were safe. But now... now you've crossed a line."

Lulu could feel the weight of his words sinking into her skin, crawling under her flesh like a disease. She had never imagined he could say something like that, that he could look at her with such coldness.

And then, as if to seal the final blow, he took a step back. "Maybe it's better this way. Maybe it's better you see the truth now, before it's too late."

Before she could respond, he turned on his heel and walked toward the door, his footsteps echoing in the silence of the apartment. He opened it and paused, his back still to her.

"You're in way over your head, Lulu. You've made a dangerous choice."

And with that, he was gone.
