Chapter 2 Beneath the surface

The night wore on, but Lulu couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. Mafred sat beside her on the couch, his arm around her shoulders, the warmth of his presence both a comfort and a reminder of the tension in the air. It was almost as if the closeness between them had become fragile, like a delicate thread that could snap at any moment.

The movie flickered on, but neither of them seemed particularly invested in it. Mafred was quiet, lost in thought, his hand resting absently on her knee. Lulu glanced up at him several times, trying to read his expression, but he seemed distant, his focus scattered. He had always been a little enigmatic, but this was different. It was more than just his usual guarded Ness it was a deliberate withdrawal, as if he was keeping something from her.

Lulu shifted slightly, adjusting her position so that she could face him directly. She needed to know what was going on with him, to understand the source of the coldness she could feel between them. For the first time, she realized she had never really asked about his past about who he was before he became the billionaire entrepreneur she had come to know and love. Maybe she had been too swept up in the allure of his success, too dazzled by his charm, to ask the hard questions.

"Do you ever think about... your past?" Lulu asked, her voice softer than she intended. The words hung in the air, weighted with unspoken meaning.

Mafred's eyes flickered to hers for just a moment, and then quickly shifted away. The brief contact sent a jolt through her, one she couldn't quite explain.

"Sometimes," he replied with a forced casualness that didn't quite match the tension in his voice. "But there's no need to dwell on things that are long behind me. I have everything I need now everything I want."

Lulu's heart tightened at his words. There was something in the way he said it that made her feel like she was standing on the edge of a cliff, peering down into an abyss. She wanted to press him further, to ask him why he was avoiding the subject, but she didn't know if she was ready for what he might reveal.

"Are you sure about that?" she asked, her voice barely above a whisper.

Mafred's expression hardened, a flash of something unreadable passing through his eyes. For a moment, Lulu thought he might snap at her, but instead, he forced a smile, one that didn't reach his eyes.

"I'm sure, Lulu. You're all that matters to me now."

His words should have reassured her, but instead, they sent a shiver down her spine. There was a coldness in his tone, something hidden beneath the surface of his words.

Lulu tried to shake it off, to focus on the present, but the feeling of unease continued to claw at her. She glanced at the clock nearly midnight. She hadn't realized how much time had passed. But before she could say anything more, Mafred stood up abruptly.

"I'm going to take a shower," he said, his voice clipped. "I'll be back in a minute."

Lulu watched him retreat into the bathroom, the door closing with a soft click behind him. She sat frozen on the couch for a moment, her mind racing. Something had changed. She could feel it in the air, in the subtle shifts in his behavior. It wasn't just a passing mood it was something deeper, something that had been building for a while, hidden beneath the façade of their perfect life.

And just as she was about to reach for her phone to check her messages, a soft knock at the door startled her. She frowned, looking toward the entrance. It was late too late for anyone to be visiting. No one ever came by this late, and certainly not without calling first.

Cautiously, she rose from the couch, her heart rate quickening. As she approached the door, the hairs on the back of her neck stood on end. Who could it be at this hour?

She peered through the peephole, but the hallway was empty. There was no one in sight.

A chill ran down her spine. It had to be a mistake a prank, maybe, or some random person knocking on the wrong door. But just as she was about to turn away, a small piece of paper slipped beneath the door, catching her attention.

She bent down to retrieve it, her fingers trembling as she unfolded it. The note was short, written in a jagged, almost hurried hand:

Stop digging. You have no idea what you're up against.

The words felt like a slap to her face, sending a wave of dread coursing through her veins. Her mind raced. Who would leave such a cryptic note at her door? What was she supposed to stop digging into? And why now?

Before she could process the implications, she heard the faint sound of the bathroom door opening. The heavy footsteps of Mafred's shoes echoed down the hallway, and within seconds, he was back in the living room, wiping his hands on a towel.

"Everything okay?" he asked, his tone casual but his eyes flickering with an unreadable emotion.

Lulu's hand clenched around the note. Her pulse was racing, and she felt the weight of the words in her hands, a warning she couldn't ignore. But she didn't want him to see the note not yet. Not until she knew what it meant.

She forced a smile, trying to mask the confusion and fear that had risen in her chest. "Yeah, everything's fine."

But as she met Mafred's eyes, the same unease settled deeper in her stomach. Whatever this was, it wasn't just a random note. It was a message, and it was meant for her.

And somehow, she knew it had everything to do with Mafred.

As the night unfolded, Lulu realized that the life she had thought was so perfect was slowly disintegrating before her eyes. The note was just the beginning of something far darker and she was standing right in the middle of it. With Mafred still hiding something, the question now was not if she could trust him, but what kind of man he really was and whether the truth would destroy her completely.
