Chapter 4

I didn't understand how things ended up this way.

Jarrod used to be a gentle and good husband.

We met at the hospital, and he was my attending physician.

Before meeting him, I never imagined a doctor could be so handsome, which made me no longer dread going to the hospital.

Most importantly, Jarrod had a pair of hands with long, slender fingers that were more beautiful than any I could draw myself-truly a dream come true for anyone with a fascination for beautiful hands.

After that, I not only went to my follow-up appointments on time but also occasionally flirted with him.

Unfortunately, he remained unmoved.

One day, I saw him caring for a child who had just lost their mother in a car accident, with such tenderness in his eyes that it seemed to melt away, which made me deeply touched.

I approached Jarrod and told him I wanted to pursue him.

At first, he didn't take it seriously.

But I was a person of action, so from that day on, I went to the hospital every day to see him. When he said I was disturbing his work, I waited for him in the lobby until he finished.

I learned the skills of cooking soups from my mom. Knowing that doctors often didn't have time to eat during work, so whenever I could, I brought him meals.

Yet, he still didn't agree to date me.

It wasn't until six months later, when I was late because my editor was chasing me for a deadline, that I saw Jarrod rushing out of the hospital. He froze when he saw me, then hugged me and said he was relieved I was okay.

I later found out that there had been a violent dispute at the hospital. A patient's family member had injured many people with a fire extinguisher in the infusion hall where I usually stayed. Jarrod thought I had been hurt, which was why he was so worried.

Eventually, I proposed to Jarrod, and we naturally got married.

There wasn't a fiery passion, but a steady and enduring love.

The day I was confirmed pregnant, Jarrod joyfully lifted me off my feet and spun me around. Whenever he had time, he would even talk to the baby in my belly.

We both looked forward to the child's birth.

Then Sylvia returned, and Jarrod started using work as an excuse to come home later and later.

And then we lost the baby.

I realized something. Jarrod had no principles when it came to Sylvia. For his first love, he was willing to sacrifice even his own child.

Unfortunately, I understood this too late.
