Chapter 1

I lay on the stretcher, writhing in agony.

The pain in my stomach was unbearable.

I felt warm liquid flowing beneath me.

And I reached out, trying to grasp the blurred figure beside me.

Please, save my baby!

"Dr. Smith, the blood bank is running low. There's only one bag of type A blood left, and both your wife and Miss Ford need it. Who should we prioritize?" A nurse rushed in, her voice urgent.

Through my hazy vision, I saw a tall man standing by the bed.

"Jarrod... save... save our child."

"Give me the plasma, " Jarrod demanded, snatching the plasma from the nurse's hands.

I finally managed to grab his hand, feeling a sense of relief wash over me.

Don't be afraid, child. Daddy would save you.

But then, he abruptly shook off my hand.

My hand hit the bed frame with a resounding thud.

"Katie, Sylvia got hurt trying to save you. You can't be this selfish. The blood supply from the nearby hospital is being rushed over. Just hold on a little longer."

With that, Jarrod ran out without looking back.

I reached out, but grasped nothing, watching helplessly as he left.

Before losing consciousness, I wondered why this could happen.

Oh right, today I was accepting my prenatal check-up.

Jarrod Smith, my husband, hadn't been home for two nights, so I made some soup to bring to him.

Then, I seemed to have been in a car accident.

At that moment, I had only one thought that I must protect my child.

Child?

I jolted awake, my whole body aching.

I tried to lift my hand, but my fingers wouldn't obey my mind.

"You're awake?" A doctor wearing a mask approached, his eyes filled with sorrow.

"I'm truly sorry for your loss. Due to severe bleeding, we couldn't save your baby."

I stared wide-eyed. What was he saying? How could my child not be saved?

My fingertips finally touched my belly.

There was no heartbeat anymore.

I opened my mouth, but I couldn't cry out. Tears silently soaked into my hair.
