Chapter 4 Clash of Shadows

The packhouse loomed ahead like a fortress, its stone walls and towering frame imposing against the backdrop of the moonlit forest.

Sandra, now Emilia in form and flesh, followed Gabriel in silence, her mind spinning with questions, fears, and the darkness whispering from the depths of her new existence.

But those whispers were silenced, drowned out by the tension that was thickening around her like a tightening noose.

Mikel. The Alpha. His name alone stirred something dark in the air, a foreboding that prickled against Emilia's skin.

She hadn't met him yet, but she could feel his presence pulsing through the very walls of the packhouse, a silent command of power that seeped into every corner.

This was his domain, his territory, and she was a stranger. An intruder.

Gabriel had said nothing more to her after leading her inside. He merely gestured toward the healers waiting in the hall.

Two wolves, their expressions unreadable, had stepped forward to examine her, their hands rough yet efficient as they assessed her physical state.

It was a stark reminder of how unfamiliar this body was to her, the raw strength coiled in her muscles, the heightened senses she still hadn't fully adjusted to.

But Emilia-or rather, the body of Emilia-bore no injuries. Her rebirth had been clean, leaving no outward mark of her previous death.

It didn't take long for the healers to conclude their examination. No wounds, no sign of illness.

Physically, she was fine. But the tension in the air only thickened as they stepped back, their gazes shifting uneasily between her and Gabriel.

It was obvious to them, as it was to everyone else in the room, that she is a total Stranger, she is not from their territory.

Gabriel's gaze narrowed, a dangerous gleam appearing in his amber eyes. "The Alpha is ready to meet you," he whispered, turning around and leading her down the dimly lit corridor.

The heavier the air grew as they walked, and Sandra-*Emilia*, she amended herself-felt the weight of what was to come.

The Alpha would demand answers, but she had none. Not any that would make sense, not any that wouldn't get her killed.

They reached a heavy wooden door at the end of the corridor, its dark surface engraved with the ancient emblems of the Oakland pack.

Gabriel knocked once, a sharp, authoritative rap that echoed through the corridor, and the door creaked open .

Emilia hesitated at the threshold. Her instincts screamed at her to run, to get away while she still could.

The wolf inside her-the dark, feral energy that had reawakened with her rebirth-bristled with unease, pacing beneath her skin like a caged beast.

It sensed the danger, the power that lay behind the door.

But there was no escape. Not now. She had to face whatever waited for her within.

Gabriel commanded her to enter, and with a deep, steadying breath, she walked into the room.

The air inside was colder, thicker, filled with an energy that tingled on her skin.

The room was large yet dimly lit, with only the slight glow of the moon shining through the high windows casting pale light on the stone floor.

At the distant end of the room, behind a large, impressive desk, sat the Alpha.

Mikel.

Even when seated, his presence was overpowering, a silent aura of authority that filled the room like a brewing storm .

As soon as she walked in, his intense, dark, and icy gaze immediately locked on her, seeming to physically press down on her

He appeared younger than she had expected, with sharp predatory features, and a restrained powerful demeanour.

His dark hair framed his face in a way that made him seem both regal yet deadly, and there was an intensity about him, a quiet, threatening violence that made her blood run cold.

Mikel didn't speak right away.He merely observed her his eyes narrowing slightly as if though he could see straight through the mask she was wearing, straight to the secrets she so desperately needed to keep hidden.

Emilia fought to keep her expression neutral, but her pulse quickened under the weight of his scrutiny. The wolf inside her, Emilia's wolf, stirred again, a dark whisper curling at the edges of her mind. *You're not safe here. He knows.*

Finally, Mikel stood, his movements slow and deliberate, yet displaying a deadly grace as he got up from his chair. He moved around the desk, coming to stand directly in front of her, his tall figure casting a long shadow in the room.

"You were found unconscious near our borders," he started, his voice deep and measured, yet with a hint of coldness that sent a shiver down her spine.

"My Beta"brought you here. You've been tended to by our healers, but you've offered no explanation for your sudden appearance. I don't like surprises in my territory."

Emilia's heart pounded in her chest, and she forced herself to meet his gaze, though every instinct told her to look away. His eyes were intense, predatory, and searching, as if he could pull the truth from her mind through sheer force of will.

"I... don't remember much," she lied, her voice steady, though her hands trembled slightly at her sides. "I woke up and found myself near the border. I don't know how I got there."

Mikel's gaze darkened, and he stepped closer, the air between them crackling with tension. He was suspicious-rightfully so-and his instincts, as Alpha, told him there was more to her story than she was letting on.

She could feel it in the way his eyes narrowed, the way his muscles tensed slightly, like a wolf ready to attack.

"The edge of my territory is not a place where one simply wakes up,"he said, with a low and menacing voice. "You're hiding something. And I'm going to find out what it is."

Emilia's breath hitched, her body stiffening under the weight of his threat.

The darkness inside her started to awaken again, with increased urgency challenging her ability to control it.It wanted to lash out, to defend itself, to demonstrate its strength and resilience But she couldn't afford to lose control. Not at the moment. Not in front of him.

"I'm telling the truth," she insisted, though her voice lacked the necessary confidence. She could see the scepticism in Mikel's eyes, and the way his jaw tensed, signalling that he was resisting the temptation to dispute her right then and there.

The silence that followed was thick with tension, and for a moment, Emilia questioned herself if this was where her second chance would end-here, in the cold, unforgiving gaze of the Alpha.

But Mikel didn't strike. Not yet.

He moved closer, bringing his face just a few inches away from hers, his breath warm against her skin.

"You're not from here," he said quietly, his voice a low growl.

"You don't smell like one of us. Who are you?"

The question hung in the air like a blade poised to strike, and Emilia's mind raced for an answer, for a lie that would be convincing enough to satisfy him

But there was nothing. She couldn't tell him the truth-that she was Sandra, reborn in Emilia's body, sent back by the Moon Goddess herself to right the wrongs of her past. The truth would sound insane, and worse, it would make her a target.

She swallowed hard, her pulse racing, and for a moment, she thought of Daniel-of the way he had looked at her, the love in his eyes before it had all been torn away. She couldn't fail him again. She couldn't fail Lucy.

"I told you," she replied calmly, retaining his eyes. "I don't remember."Mikel's jaw tensed, and muscles in his neck tightened.

He did not say anything for a long time, but the air surrounding them seemed to tighten with an unspoken challenge.

Sandra's heart raced in her chest, every nerve in her body begging for her to flee from his focused stare. But she held her ground, pushing herself to be still and confront his challenge head-on.

Finally, after what felt like hours, Mikel pulled back, his expression unreadable. But the tension between them hadn't lessened. If anything, it had only grown thicker, more dangerous.

"You may not remember," he said, with a tone deceitfully calm. "But I don't trust you.

"And until I do, you'll stay under my watch."

Sandra's stomach twisted into knots, but she nodded. There was no use arguing. She was trapped, bound to this pack until Mikel decided she was no longer a threat.

But even as dread settled in her chest, she couldn't shake the feeling that Mikel's suspicion was only the beginning.

"I'll have Gabriel escort you to a room," Mikel said, turning back toward his desk. "You'll remain there until I say otherwise. Any attempt to leave, and you'll regret it."His tone left no room for negotiation.

He wasn't just suspicious-he was preparing for a clash. And Sandra knew that if she wasn't careful, that clash could be the end of her.

Without another word, Mikel dismissed them both.

Gabriel led her out with a strong grip on her arm, but the intensity of Mikel's gaze lingered on even after they exited the room.

As they moved through the hallway, Sandra's mind raced, trying to process all the recent events .She realised that mikel posed a threat.he is More dangerous than she had imagined.

And he wasn't going to stop until he uncovered the truth. But she couldn't let him. Not yet. Not until she figured out what had happened to Daniel and Lucy.

Not until she knew more about why the Moon Goddess had chosen her for this second chance. As they reached the end of the hall, Gabriel opened a door and motioned for her to enter..

The room was small and sparse, with only a bed and a window overlooking the forest. It was cold, unwelcoming, but it was better than facing the wrath of the Alpha again

"You'll stay here," Gabriel said gruffly. "Don't make me regret bringing you in."Sandra nodded, her throat too tight to speak. Gabriel gave her one last suspicious look before closing the door behind her.

As the door closed behind her, sealing her fate in the Oakland pack,Emilia knew this was only the beginning of a fate she is yet to discover.
