Chapter 5 The Contract

The room was silent except for the rustling of paper as Francis slid the contract across the desk toward her. It looked official-too official. The words on the page blurred together as Racheal stared at them, unsure of how to feel. The reality of what she was about to do was starting to sink in, and it terrified her.

Francis watched her closely, his eyes never leaving her face as she studied the document. He was calm, poised, the very picture of control, while she felt like a stranger in this world of wealth and power. It was as though he had already claimed her future, and the contract was just a formality.

"The terms are simple," he said, breaking the silence. "We marry, you live here with me, and you perform the duties expected of a wife in a business arrangement. No emotions, no complications. Our relationship is for the benefit of both our families."

Racheal nodded, though her throat felt tight. She had read the contract over twice already. It outlined everything-her new life, her responsibilities, and her role as his wife in this arrangement. There was no room for love, no room for deviation. It was cold, precise, a business deal through and through.

"You'll be expected to attend public events, meetings, and functions alongside me," he continued. "Your presence will help solidify the image of unity and strength for both the Blackwood name and your family's. There will be no room for weakness."

Racheal glanced up at him, meeting his gaze for the first time since entering the study. His face was unreadable, his expression almost cold, but there was an intensity in his eyes that sent a shiver down her spine.

"I understand," she said softly, though her mind was still racing. Could she really live like this? Could she live with him, in his world, where everything was about appearances and reputation?

Francis's lips curved slightly, his approval apparent in the way his gaze softened just for a moment. "You'll have everything you need, Racheal. You'll never want for anything. And in return, I expect loyalty. Your role is to be by my side, no questions asked."

She didn't reply immediately, her fingers tracing the edges of the contract. Her mind was a whirlwind of thoughts. This wasn't the life she had imagined for herself, but could she truly walk away? Her family's situation had always been fragile, and Francis's offer, though cold, promised stability-a chance to escape the struggle she had lived with for so long.

Her mother's face flashed in her mind-her tired eyes, her hands worn from years of hard work. This could be the opportunity to lift them from their difficulties. But at what cost? Was it worth sacrificing everything she had ever dreamed of for the sake of a secure future?

"You're hesitating," Francis noted, his voice low. "This is the moment of truth, Racheal. Once you sign, there's no turning back. It's not just a contract, it's a commitment to the Blackwood family, to me."

Racheal took a deep breath, glancing back down at the paper before her. There were terms about their financial arrangements, about her role in the company, and about the expectations of their public life. There was no mention of love, no mention of a future beyond the business arrangement. But that was the whole point, wasn't it? She wasn't supposed to fall for him.

Her fingers shook slightly as she picked up the pen. She looked at Francis one last time, searching his face for any hint of kindness, any sign that he might care for her beyond what she could offer him. But all she saw was the businessman. The man who had orchestrated this deal with cold precision.

And yet, for a brief moment, she wondered-could there be more to this? Could a man like him, so focused on power and control, ever change? Or was he simply too far removed from the world she had known?

Racheal exhaled slowly, her thoughts clouded, but her decision clear. She signed the document with a swift motion, feeling the weight of the moment settle on her shoulders.

"Done," she said, her voice barely a whisper.

Francis didn't smile, but the look in his eyes softened, just slightly. He stood and walked around the desk, his gaze never leaving her. He held out his hand to her, not in a gesture of affection, but as a way to seal the deal.

"Welcome to the Blackwood family, Racheal," he said, his voice cool but with an undertone of something more. "Your life has just changed."

Racheal reached out, her hand trembling as she placed it in his. The contract was signed, and her fate was sealed.

But as she looked up at him, she couldn't shake the feeling that this was only the beginning of a much deeper and more complicated story.
