Chapter 4 Her secret is safe...

Throughout the drive back home, my mind was blank. I intentionally forced myself not to think. I know how carried away I get when my mind is shuffling through thoughts. I almost drove myself into an accident when I was going earlier. I'm not going to do that to myself again this time.

Kill myself over a man who doesn't give a f*ck about me and busy screwing my best friend?

Best friend? Really? How could you still be calling that back-biting b*tch ass wh*re your best friend? - a thought rose in my head.

I took in a deep breath and then let it out slowly as I blanked out my mind. I pulled into the driveway and then went into the house.

I was sleek and quiet, making sure not to wake him up.

Watching him snore away like his life depended on it, I was filled with rage again. I grabbed my pillow and for a second there, I felt the urge to stifle the life out of him with the pillow... but I didn't.

Instead, I curled into his arms and pretended like nothing happened. He pulled me in closer and placed a peek at my neck, which irritated me so much that I felt like throwing up.

"I love you, babe..." he let out drowsily while I rolled my eyes.

How would I even know if he was saying that to me or his true love? Of course, it had to be Sonia.

I closed my eyes in sleep and the next time I opened them, it was morning. Looking beside me, the bed was empty. I heard the tap running and knew he was in the bathroom.

Slowly, I got up, walked up to the mirror and saw the diamond glitter on my new necklace.

I took a deep sigh and then went downstairs into the kitchen to prepare his breakfast.

"Morning love..." I suddenly heard his voice behind me.

"Morning," I let out, but didn't turn to look at him.

"What's wrong, love?" He quizzed while he grabbed my waist and turned my face to him.

He stared intently into my eyes and then kissed my nose.

"Nothing. I'm good, how was your night? And ohh, thanks for the... necklace, I really love it. It really suits my skin and then initials, what do they mean?" I quizzed and, as expected, he suddenly had a cough.

I quickly poured him a glass of water which he managed to only take a sip of before passing it back to me.

"You're welcome, you know I would do anything for you. I'm sorry about our little fight last night. I promise to do better."

"Is that why you're still a bit cold to me this morning?" He asked and I found myself smiling.

Of course, by all means, ignore the question and change the narrative? Make it about me!

"It's fine. I'm better now," I replied.

"Glad you are. Next time, don't overthink it, it makes you overreact, and it's not a good look on you." He chimed in while I smiled again.

I dished out his food and he gobbled it down in a rush. He tried to engage me in his usual small talks, but I just wasn't in the mood.

"Are you sure you're fine, love? You're a bit quiet this morning and that's unlike you," he said after taking the last bite.

"I'm okay, I'm just feeling a little unwell. I don't think I'll be going to work today." I retorted while he immediately pulled me into his arms, smiling and kissing me all over the face.

"I'm sorry, love. Should I stay back at home to take care of you? Why did you even wake up so early then? You should have stayed in bed and rest more. You didn't have to do all the cooking. I really enjoyed it though. I won't function well if I don't start the day with your delicious delicacies..." he let out.

"I would have loved to stay at home with you, but I have loads of work at the office. Remember the huge project I told you about? It's giving me a lot of tough time and needs my full attention," he added.

"I understand. I'll be fine, I just need to rest. Your work shouldn't stop because of me." He nodded and then waved me goodbye.

I stood there and watched him walk away. I waited till his car was out of the compound before grabbing my phone to call Sonia.

"Heyyy babe!!!" She exclaimed.

"Sonia... Dennis is cheating on me!" I let out and then burst into tears.

"Oh my goodness, Dennis is cheating on you? He wouldn't dare! Freya, are you sure? You know how much he's in love with you. He doesn't even look at other women." She retorted.

"He is, I know he is," I insisted.

"How are you sure? Do you have evidence? Did you see him with anyone? Talk to me babe, I can't help you if you don't tell me." She pushed while I just continued sobbing.

"I just know he is. I can't even go to work. I'm sick." I let out.

"Okay then, I was about going to work, but I'll take the day off and come see you. Just put your mind at rest and don't do anything till I get there. Don't tell anyone either, you can't trust people to keep your secrets, you know." She assured me and then hung up.

I dropped my phone and quickly did the dishes and also prepared some snacks for the week.

I hadn't left the kitchen when I heard Sonia pull in front of the house.

"Babe!!!" She screamed while I dried my hands and went to meet her.

The moment I opened the door, she was already there. She quickly pulled me into a hug while I burst into tears again. She held me tighter and kept muttering soothing words in my ears. I couldn't even hear most of it, but I didn't stop her until she released her grip.

She stared into my eyes and then hugged me again. This time, it was brief. She then took my hand and led me to the living room.

I sat on the couch, and she sat beside me, facing and staring into my eyes.

"Did you catch him with someone?" She asked while I nodded.

She immediately turned red and a bit jumpy. Even her voice was starting to shake as she continued.

"You caught him with someone? Who? Where? When?" she rushed, but I didn't answer.

I just took my phone, swiped it and then turned the screen to her face. It was the anonymous text message I got that I showed her.

"But this doesn't mean anything. It could be your rivals trying to cause separation between you two." She quickly chimed in while I dropped the phone. She wanted to take the phone from me, but I didn't let her.

"Dennis has changed, Sonia. I've been noticing the little changes, but I have never read any meaning of them. I just assumed that it was work. You know, ever since I became the manager, and he became the leader for about three teams, we have been busy, and we just started drifting apart. I thought that was all to it, so I thought of spicing things up."

"I got that text message yesterday and I went straight to the hotel, thinking it was a surprise from him."

"It was actually a surprise, just not the one I was expecting. I found my fiancé with another woman. He had another woman in his arms and he was kissing and making out with him like his life depended on it. He has never even kissed me like that ever!" I let out pitifully, but looking at Sonia, she was the pitiful one.

She had started to fan herself and sweating even under the full blasting air conditioner.

"Whats happening? Are you okay? You're sweating? The air conditioning is one. Why are you sweating this much?" I quizzed while she quickly held my hand.

"I'm fine, I'm just shocked to hear all that you said. I still find it hard to believe, but since you saw him yourself, what about the lady he was with? Do you know her? Did you confront them?" she asked while I shook my head.

"I couldn't see the lady's face, Dennis' back was blocking my view, all I knew was he was with someone. I was even too shocked and hurt to confront them. I just went back out and have been crying my eyes out since then. I can't believe Dennis could cheat on me. Why? Just why? I've tried my best to satisfy him, Sonia, why would he betray me like that?" I let out and then started crying again.

"What about pictures? Did you take any? You know I might know the lady, and we'll know what to do from there." She asked.

"No, I didn't take any pictures. The thought didn't cross my mind until I confronted him when he got back home, and he denied it. It was his words against mine, since I had no proof," I retorted while she let out a deep sigh. I could tell it was a sigh of relief.

No pictures, no proof. Her secret was safe...
