Chapter 5 5

On the night of the full moon, she made her way into the forest. The forest was cloaked in shadows, dense and still, as if holding its breath for what was to come. Mina moved carefully, her footsteps muffled by the thick carpet of leaves underfoot. She clutched a bundle of herbs, candles, and a small silver knife-a makeshift offering to the spirits of the forest. Her heart pounded with a mixture of fear and determination as she reached the clearing she had chosen for the ritual.

The night was alive with the energy of the full moon, its silvery light casting an otherworldly glow over the trees and rocks. Mina's fingers trembled as she arranged the candles in a circle around her, placing the herbs and the knife in the center. She took a deep breath, focusing her mind on Alec, on the tortured look in his eyes, and the terrible loneliness she knew he carried within him.

As she knelt to light the candles, she thought back to the words she had studied, phrases in an old, forgotten language meant to call upon the forest's spirits. The book had warned that these entities were ancient and capricious, that they had their own desires and rules that mortal minds could barely comprehend. But Mina felt she had no choice. Alec's life was on the line, and if there was even a chance she could help him, she was willing to take the risk.

She took a steadying breath and began to chant, her voice soft and wavering at first but growing stronger as she repeated the words. The air grew colder, the sounds of the forest fading until only her voice remained, echoing through the trees. The moonlight seemed to brighten, illuminating the clearing with an eerie glow, and a faint, unnatural wind stirred the leaves, swirling them around her in a slow, deliberate dance.

And then, she felt it-a presence, ancient and powerful, watching her from the shadows. She couldn't see it, but she could feel it, a weight pressing down on her, filling her with a mixture of awe and terror. Her voice faltered, and for a moment, she wondered if she had made a terrible mistake.

But she forced herself to continue, her gaze fixed on the moon overhead. "I come to you in need," she said, her voice barely a whisper. "I seek to break a curse, to free a soul that has been bound for generations. Please... hear me."

The wind died down, leaving an almost oppressive silence in its wake. Mina held her breath, her heart hammering in her chest, as she waited for a response.

The silence stretched on, and just as she began to fear that her plea had gone unheard, a voice, deep and resonant, echoed through the clearing. It was neither male nor female, neither young nor old, but it held a power that made her shiver.

"Why do you seek to meddle in matters beyond your understanding, mortal?" the voice intoned, its tone both curious and disdainful.

Mina swallowed, steeling herself. "I seek to free a man who suffers under the curse of the Nightbound," she said, her voice trembling but determined. "He is bound to the moon, forced to live as something neither human nor beast. I ask... I beg you, to release him."

There was a pause, and then a low, rumbling chuckle echoed through the clearing, filling the air with an unsettling sense of amusement. "The Nightbound are bound by choice, bound by blood. It is not a curse that can be lifted so easily."

"Please," Mina said, desperation creeping into her voice. "Alec didn't choose this. His ancestors did, but he didn't. He deserves a chance to live a life free of this... this suffering."

Another pause, and then the voice spoke again, its tone thoughtful. "You speak of choice as if it is something so simple. But the blood that flows within him is ancient, woven with the essence of the wild. To break such a bond is to defy the very nature of his being."

Mina felt a surge of frustration. "Then what's the point? Why should he have to suffer for something he didn't choose?"

The voice was silent for a long moment, and when it spoke again, there was a hint of curiosity in its tone. "Why do you care so deeply for this one? Why risk your own life to free him from his fate?"

Mina hesitated, unsure how to answer. She hadn't expected to be questioned like this, hadn't anticipated that her own motives would be examined. But as she thought about Alec, about the connection she felt with him, she realized the answer was simpler than she had thought.

"Because he deserves a chance to be free," she said quietly. "Because no one should have to carry a burden like that alone. And... because I care about him."

The silence that followed was so profound that it made her skin prickle. She could feel the presence considering her words, weighing them as if they held some kind of power.

"Very well," the voice said finally. "If you are willing to pay the price, there may be a way."

Mina's heart leaped, though a thread of fear laced her excitement. "What... what do you mean by 'the price'?"

"The bond that holds the Nightbound cannot be severed without consequence," the voice explained. "To free him from this curse, a bond must be made in its place-an exchange, a balance."

Mina frowned, confusion clouding her mind. "An exchange?"

"Yes," the voice intoned, its tone solemn. "If you wish to free him, you must take his place. You must bind yourself to the night, to the wild, to the blood that courses through his veins. Only then can he be released."

The words hung heavy in the air, and Mina felt a cold dread settle over her. She had come here willing to risk her life, but this... this was something different. To take Alec's place, to become one of the Nightbound herself-it was a sacrifice she hadn't anticipated.
