I sighed, feeling extremely tired of her curious self. "Omg, Katherine!" I said through my teeth, almost screaming. "I am fine," I lied. I wasn't fine. In fact, I was hurting so badly. It was just so hard to believe that I would be at the point that I am today. I honestly didn't see that coming. I had given up everything, including my job as an attorney just to be a better wife to him but then he thought this was the perfect way to say thank you.
"If you say so, Kay," Katherine breathed, forcing herself up from her seat. It was pretty obvious that she didn't want to leave yet. She was genuinely worried about me but it was unnecessary.
"Wait," I blurted out, making her stop in her tracks. She raised her gaze an let it fall on me. "I just need you to be rest assured that I am fine. Although not hundred percent but it is something I can handle,"
She smiled weakly at me, reaching out for my hand. "Kay..." my stomach grumbled, interrupting her words. I laughed awkwardly, grabbing it tightly.
"It's almost time for lunch," she said, her eyes glistening. "Do you want to tag along?"
Tag along? Of course! But that would surely be a risk because I would end up eating tons of calories that I wasn't supposed to eat. "No," I replied neutrally, my gaze glued on Katherine's face as I watched it fold into disappointment. "It's my first day at work and I need to put everything in order,"
"But you can do that when you return," Katherine protested.
I shook my head in disagreement, "I will just place an order. Don't worry about me, you can go on,"
She shrugged her shoulders and left with a smile plastered on her face. I sighed out in relief, putting behind every thoughts of Eric and his newly wedded wife that has started to play in my head, behind. Who were they to live rent free in my head anyway? I proceeded to tidying up my dusty and unarranged desk. I have been away immediately I got married and had totally forgotten that such a place still exists. I had tons of cases to look into as the senior associate attorney here in Lexington Law group. I exhaled sharply. It feels so good to be back, I murmured to myself. But then it hurts a bit that I came back the same or even much worse.
My stomach grumbled again, this time around, heavily. Maybe it was time to keep these files away and eat something. Reaching out for my phone, I tried to place an order for grilled salmon and almond drink even though I had been seriously craving for burgers and a pet of whole milk. Clicking on the next icon after making up my mind that one-time burger and whole milk wouldn't kill, David's nagging and annoying face clustered my memory instantly.
In his words, "You must stick to your food timetable and avoid calories at all cost till eighty days is over!"
I shook my head vehemently to clear the fog, my heartbreaking into pieces. I had brought this upon myself and I better deal with it even though it had happened in the wrong way. I took the previous steps and tried to order grilled salmon and some almond drink when suddenly the network went off.
"Sht" I cussed. How could it have gone off now that I needed it the most?
I rose from my seat, grabbing my wallet and making sure my credit card was in it. David had given me the card some days back, saying it was a gift from some foreigner whom he helped back then when he was still in the states. Looking at it, it didn't look like it was something he could afford to set up. I mean, he was just a trainer, struggling to survive as well.
I headed towards the door, closing it behind as I approached the space where junior associates and interns were placed.
"Ma'am Kayla!" A voice called. I couldn't recognize it so I turned, giving him my attention.
"Yes?" I said softly, trying to suppress my grumbling stomach.
"Will you be back soon? I need you to look at these files," he said, adjusting his ID. I couldn't recognize his face though but then he looked really timid, like he was newly employed and also by the way he makes sure his ID is placed rightly on his chest.
"Have them placed on the desk in my office. I will be back soon," I said urgently, turning to leave but the as I threw my foot ahead, I heard a funny sound.
RRRIIIPPPP!
I gasped, my heart thumping heavily in my chest. Could that be what I am thinking? How's that even possible? Could it be that I added more weight? I had been seriously avoiding foods with calories and I had taken my trainings seriously. How was it possible that my pants had just gotten ripped?!
My feet stuck on the ground like I had them dipped into an araldite glue, making it difficult to be carried up. The crazy hunger I was feeling earlier had suddenly disappeared, and had gotten replaced by a feeling of awkwardness, sadness and embarrassment altogether. Such an embarrassing moment had chosen the wrong time to happen. I didn't even know how I was going to get out of the mess. Help. I really needed it but then who would come to my rescue?
Holding the ripped part tightly, I struggled to leave the scene but then I heard the other staffs, laughing and whispering to themselves. I shut my eyes tightly, dying of embarrassment as I tried to take my attention away from what they were saying. My first day at work after a long time had been recorded a mess, thanks to my 300kg overweight self.
Suddenly, my gaze fell on the figure approaching the lobby.
It was David.
He smiled softly at me, flinging his jacket around my waist to cover up my shame.
"Don't worry, I'm here now,"
